Palestinian solidarity protests and encampments are appearing on college campuses from Massachusetts to California to protest Israel's attacks on Gaza and to call for divestment from Israeli apartheid. This week, police have raided encampments and arrested students at Yale and New York University. Palestinian American scholar and New York University professor Helga Tawil-Souri describes forming a faculty buffer to protect students, negotiating with police, and the ensuing crackdown that led to over 100 arrests Monday night. Uptown in New York City, the encampment at Columbia University is entering its seventh day despite mass arrests of protesters last week. "In my opinion, the NYPD were called in under false pretenses by the president of the university," says Joseph Slaughter, professor at Columbia University. "The university is being run as a sort of ad-hocracy at this point, the senior administration making up policies and procedures and prohibitions on the fly, changing them in the middle of the night."

As a Combat Vet, I'm often asked, why our soldiers fight far from our home. Here's what I tell them; We fight over there so people here don't have to experience the horrors these people mean to bring here. So our citizens do not experience what we do while deployed. And, what is happening now, on these Universities, is a slap in the face of our sacrifice. These woke, entitled, students, while my brothers are fighting, and sacrificing, have invited our nations enemies onto our soil. They're aiding and abetting them, knowingly, or unknowingly, to make a flanking move around our forward lines. They are being indoctrinated, purposely, by forces they don't understand. These students should take some classes instead of protesting over something that is trending. I think it’s scary that they are literally dressed like ISIS. My comment was in reference to history. I am extremely proud of the faculty of Columbia. It seems that a number of them have the courage of their convictions. I understand that the college president is in fear of losing her career. I really get that. However, listening to the first speaker, it appears that she has set herself or the school up for several lawsuits. The population of students does include children of wealthy families or professional families. I think there’s a probability that they will have the resources to file lawsuits against her and the school. I do feel sorry for the president of Columbia. It appears she reacted out of fear. The worst decisions I have personally ever made were based in fear.

You are allowed to call police if you feel someone is in danger. That's why police takes calls from schizophrenic people as well. The danger is very real to them. What the police should do is assess the situation, investigate, and act accordingly.

1968 was triggered by the discovery that Columbia U. had connections and investments with Vietnam-War related military suppliers. Once that got out, the sit-ins and demos. just snowballed on campus. The police were rather rough in putting it down, of course. The usual. It was also the apparent fact that Columbia was planning on building some segregated gym or sports center nearby.

In my case our philosophy class used our lecture hour to have a debate moderated by our lecturer in Philosophy. In the days during that turbulent week with meetings in the library run by the student union, I never saw one policeman. What a difference I see with what is happening in the United States.*

My child is a student at one of these schools currently shut down due to protest. The protest rep says PEACEFUL PROTEST. Well, if you are barricading yourselves into campus buildings, spray painting “f*^k cops” on school buildings, defacing a memorial bench for a beloved Jewish professor and damaging school property, and protesters attacking police: you are NOT A PEACEFUL PROTEST!! You are a vandal and should be arrested. My student should not have to feel fear walking on her own campus over something the remaining students have NOTHING TO DO WITH. Freedom of speech and freedom to protest cannot come at the cost of freedom of another’s safety and livelihood. The protesters lost my support the second they vandalized my child’s school. They are NOT PEACEFUL AND NOT COOPERATIVE. The protesters have refused to meet admin for discussion.

No one is being blocked by the protesters, the campuses can be accessed by all students. Perhaps the Israeli students should be with the rest of the Jewish students who are protesting the genocide that Israel is committing against the Palestinian people. Hundreds of thousands of Jewish students and adults are against what the state of Israel is doing. Its classed as private property that means the owners of the property have the last say in how it is used. If they dont want the demonstrations taking place they can call the police who can issue trespass notices or if they want arrest them. This is how it normally works where private property is involved.

Not all of us. Our bodies and for many responsibilities for young children, jobs, lack of transportation or community can and often does prevent us from being on the front lines of these causes. Protesting, for the most part, are a young persons part of the dynamics. The older generation are using their positions and influence, if they have them to fight back against atrocities in other ways.

Scaring or threatening Jewish students should be off limits. I just watched a CNN video from New York with pro-Palestinian students & activists heckling and shouting Jewish slurs. Peaceful protests are appropriate, what I saw is not.

Return the hostages first. The ceasefire was broken by Hamas in November, which was supposed to return all hostages in exchange for withdrawal and stop to the war machine.
