I’ve used an iPhone to take photos for over 7 years and currently use a 14 pro. I take RAW photos and use the native photo app as it was specifically designed for the iPhone and in my opinion can’t be bettered. The iPhone camera is no different from any other in that it has its strengths and weaknesses and you use it to maximise the former and that comes with experience. The rest is up to you, as the photographer.

I used to exclusively use the native camera app until the 14 pro as users cannot turn off the annoying HDR feature like I could with my previous iPhone. 😢

Simply stunning. This is the most compelling video covering "shoot with what you have in your pocket" topic I have seen for a long long time. This is what I will show to everyone saying "to make great photos I need proper camera". Excellent video, beautiful photographs as always. Keep going! Out!

After watching this video fully once, I've gone back and watched it again immediately - it's that good! You're making me want to visit the Lake District and other parts of the UK that I've ignored for more exotic locations abroad. I also appreciate the more relaxed pace of your videos, no crazy editing, the composition tips that are interspersed with the music in the background and then the final reveal of each shot (allowing the photos themselves time to breathe on screen). Bravo!

Great video Henry. Smartphone cameras are getting better and better with each new model. I would suspect they could possibly (if not already) replace cameras used for street photography. Have you ever considered taking a panorama with your IPhone? Your last location would have made a good experiment.

Great vid Henry, as always. Even if you don't want to use the phone for photography per se, it is a useful tool: use it to take a quick snap of somewhere you want to return to in certain weather conditions or time of year. I also use mine to record footpaths that I want to explore at a later date because it will show me a map and directions of how to get there. You took some lovely photos. I'd be interested to see what they were like printed at no larger than A4.

Hello Henry, another very good video. I'm a bit of an old dog, and I feel a bit nervous with today's technology. It's not because I can't see its value, but I feel I would lose something so precious to me if I exchanged my camera for a smart phone. I'm not anti technology, Henry, I'm just old and set in my ways and I feel closer to nature with my simple camera by my side. Good photography, Henry.

Really well done video Henry! I am sitting here at my desktop monitor and the images that fill my 32 inch screen look fantastic. Especially liked your dry stone wall shots! I have been taking all my photos recently with my old phone. It actually improves my photography because I put just as much thought and effort in shooting with iPhone as I would have if I shot with DSLR - and I always have my phone with me. Pro Camera is my app of choice, really nice results and I can only imagine what it would do paired with iPhone 14 or the latest Samsung and its 4 lenses. Thank you for a great video.

Fantastic vid Henry as usual. Ive recently had to blow up to A2 inch photos from various mobile phones for a remembrance party. Not one person said they were out of focus, grainy, blocky etc. Its just us photographers who notice resolution, maximum blacks and jpeg versus raw!!. But it is encouraging that for about 95% of the time a mobile phone is sufficient especially being able to shoot raw. Silver Halides are what they used in B/W film so great name for an app😊 Great photos and at least you had one other camera for emergencies ha ha!

Amazing video and great experiment using only the 13 mini. I am now a complete fan of iphone photography and in almost all situations except perhaps wildlife photography my iphone has replaced my DSLR. This has also led to me taking many more photos and capturing many more moments that I would otherwise have missed because I didn't feel like carrying bulky cameras around. I have tried one add on telephoto lens on the phone camera, but probably because it wasn't one of the leading brands or other wise, they don't add value to the phone by itself. The pro versions of the newer Iphones offer native zoon which is pretty good.

Great little feature, Henry. Makes me homesick for the UK 😃 I bought an iPhone 12 Mini, just to use as a backup vlogging camera for when I don't carry my big cam (I edit on LumaFusion, on the phone, when not at my pc). For photos I just use the Lightroom app, which also captures in raw. Click 'pro' and you get all the camera controls. Though not as sophisticated as the app you were using, because I'm subscribed to Adobe it all syncs up and, like the video editing, means I can edit photos on the fly, or back at home on the PC. There's a widget for the LR camera so shooting in raw is only one tap away. I have not tried other photo apps though so how this compares to others I've no idea. Keep up the great entertainment!

Hi - yes of course, the pro version iPhones shoot RAW natively and have a tele lens (better than digi zoom of course). But I was just wondering if you are a subscriber to Creative Cloud, either the photographer's package or the Lightroom package... The reason being that there is Lightroom for iPhone which has its own camera app internally. Shoot with Lightroom on any iPhone, pro or non-pro, and you can save as DNG, Adobe's native RAW format. This has all the controls you need, especially if you put it into "pro" mode.

Very impressed by your Ninja impression Henry, and Low Pike is lovely as always. You're right of course, the phone is perfectly usable for most social media platforms where their limitations are not on show. Like you I shoot a lot where I want to get way 'over there' with a telephoto and that's really the only reason that keeps me carrying a 'proper' camera. A big crop on the phone destroys the shot so you just have to let them go, as you rightly say. Some lovely shots in there, thanks for posting another thoughtful video.

We just brought my wife an iPhone 14 MAX. Because she isn't really into our hobby, she always got frustrated with the results from her DSLR. She loves the phone camera and to be honest in many (all-right some) scenarios the images that she gets are pretty comparable with mine and my expensive gear. 🤨

Good video. Phone cameras on modern phones are more than enough for beginners and people who simply want to share their photos on social media (not needing large resolutions/pixels for prints). They're amazing quality. You could do another video like this where you use the Lightroom photo editing app on the camera as well, incorporating everything phone-related into one video. Just an idea for some content. 👍

Excellent video. I am using my iPhone 13 more and more; more so for video than for stills, but as you pointed it: it is with (nearly) all the time, where my Fuji and/or Canon cameras and lenses aren't. We are sailors, and often need something in hand FAST! That it can stay in my pocket, or close at hand, and protected from salt-spray, etc., it's rapidly becoming my go to camera - so much so, that I'm upgrading soon to the iPhone 14 Pro for the better video capabilities. The Halide app is interesting as well. Always look forward to your videos, Henry. Cheers!

Another thought provoking video Henry. I've always 'helped' my smaller sensor camera and phone camera to to do what the bigger DSLR can do, and it's got easier due to the useful histograms and 'zebras' on good resolution screens. For bracketing though you can't beat a tripod or a beanbag on a wall regardless of electronic image stabilisation; and that can only be more important if the smartphone has a moderate telephoto. I also got into the habit of taking a quick 'just in case shot' on the phone camera when seeing a transient light composition. And.... watch that slipping on steep slopes! It recently lead to a broken leg for a well known American RV blogger, and I can tell you from bitter experience how long a torn Achilles Tendon can take to get even passably better. I think the rubber on some hiking boots is much less slip resistant than others and the tread pattern matters. Keep up the good work, look forward to your next video.

iPhones are very useful for the roving photographer who's not too critical with regards iq... Perfectly acceptable for online sharing and even decent sized prints. Many have software on board which maximises your DR even in jpeg mode. I like the fact their small sensors enable a decent depth of field despite shooting mostly wide open- often wider than f/2- enabling plenty of shutter speed at low iso's. I love your shot at 16 mins in... I just love that kind of hard, bleak almost lonely landscape...

I will say, great video, but that's always the norm anyway, great video! I'm a Luddite I'm afraid. The tactile sensation of the camera in my hands, the tripod, the remote shutter release, I cannot think of any other way I could do things. Phones are getting better and better, it's probably a good thing. Unfortunately, not for me. As an emergency tool, as something that would be in my pocket anyway, I can see the handiness of it, but I just wouldn't be able to get my little mind around using a phone for anything other, really, than as a phone. But, bleddy surprised at your results. Ps. Glad you didn't hurt yourself doing your Rudolf Nureyev impressions at the start of the video.

I've tried using my phone on hill walks but I don't like it. I find them hard to hold and manipulate the controls while framing the shot and my screen suffers from glare in bright light. Also, the wide angle is too wide for most of my shots. But, I have a budget 5 year old Android phone with no raw options and a single fixed lens. I'm due an upgrade this year so maybe I'll go more upmarket and treat myself to a better phone camera. I was certainly impressed by how the handheld exposure bracket came out!

Another interesting and informative video Henry and a grand day out. Thanks for sharing. As many already know, photography is mainly about what goes on behind the viewfinder .. and this video with a phone is a good example of this. I expect phone images will be good for scouting trips, where if you really find a great composition, you can then go back at get a higher quality image with the heavyweight gear. When it comes to phones and their relatively wide angle lenses, maybe you should invoke the "foot powered zoom" method, just like you'd do if you have a prime lens on the Z7. Super images as ever, keep up the good work.

Nice video. Iphones compress dynamic range which is sometimes helpful and sometimes less so. LR mobile with Raw files is flexible and gives good quality for A4. While I use mine a lot for wide angle and close ups, telephoto still definitely requires a camera for me, and gives far more compositional options. ‘Viewfinder’ of course has no flexibility on a phone which can also reduce camera angle. But who would have thought that phones would be this good for general and wide angle purposes? And they will get better.

I enjoyed the video, but one thing I say about phone photography and it's why I'm not a fan of it is it doesn't allow us to disconnect from the world properly. When we use our phones we are still connected to insgtagram, Facebook and all the other things that come with a phone. Unless you put your phone in Aeroplane Mode or turn off all the notifications, then you are going to be still bombarded with all the things that pop up on your phone. And this is very likely at some stage distract you from the actual task of taking photos. The one thing about cameras is they get you to be mindful because test buttons involving Shutter speed and so forth as well, and while there is menus on a phone that you can do all of that as well and they do take great photos. I don't think the mindfulness experience is something that can be matched on a phone I've made this point on a few other videos as well that have highlighted hair great phones are and I'm not bagging phone photographers as it is a great way for many people who don't have a lot of money or aren't very strong to hold a camera can get out and still participate in photography but if it came down to a choice, I would certainly choose a camera over a phone for that reason only. But definitely they take great photos and composition wise. Everything stays the same. It's just I don't feel they allow us to disconnect from what we're trying to get away from unless you're very disciplined

Luckily for us who do use an iphone, disconnecting is as easy as flicking the notifications switch to OFF and as far as Instagram/facebook/etc… they’re always OFF 😀

@@garyverstick1620 I think that's fine in theory, but the practicalities of that we just know that people will jump back on their phone. It's just that phones are a connection device to the rest of the world, and our brain knows that so we are tempted to always go back in and look at it

Henry, I bought the 13 Pro and the zoom is well worth the extra expense. I like you have a lot of money invested in gear, but when I am just out and about and see something (cloud cluster or a unique composition) I will snap a few shots with the phone just to not miss an opportunity..

I've got to admit Henry, that at first, I really struggled watching this video. I thought "Oh no! What's he using his iPhone for??" But then as I continued to watch I then changed my mind and thought "D'ya know something, these photos aren't half bad!" It just goes to show that I was thinking that because you were 'just using your phone' that the photos would be crap! I was wrong.

Interesting video - many thanks! I use Camera+ app on my iPhone 12 mini - it also shoots raw but has a bracketing setting so it shoots 3 frames simultaneously and you can then transfer the 3 files to your computer to blend them as usual. It can also emulate long exposures, which is fun. I suspect Halide (and others) can also do similar. Love shooting dng raws on my iPhone - good fun with IMO acceptable results.

Interesting stuff, and some great images as ever! It would be interesting to compare the Halide app you used against the standard camera app on the phone itself. Can you notice the difference?
