I've been saying this for decades - a slightly fouled barrel is better than a clean one. And things like solvents and oils inside a rifle barrel wreak havoc on rifle accuracy. The best way to prepare for hunting season is to clean your rifle barrel until it is bone dry and then take it to the range and confirm its accuracy 2 to 3 weeks before the start of hunting season. After you confirm that it is zeroed-in, do not clean the bore of the rifle! Copper fouling and a bit carbon residue from the smokeless powder will help accuracy. Oh, and one last tip. NEVER use the new modern lubricants that are based loosely on nano-polymer technology inside your rifle barrel. They are great lubricants when it comes to mechanisms, but they do their jobs too good in some ways; they will bond to the microscopic fissures inside a rifle bore and create a problem for the bullet to properly engage the lands and grooves of the rifling. It's like throwing a football that is dry and then trying to throw one that has been covered in grease. Which one can you throw most accurately?

There are a number of schools of thought concerning how to attain optimal accuracy. Some subscribe to the theory that the bore must be as clean as possible when shooting for accuracy, to allow the rifle to start from the same state each time, prior to firing fouling shots. Others subscribe to the idea that a barrel with some copper fouling in it is optimal for accuracy. This is the school to which I belong. Ideally, you will clean frequently for carbon fouling and combustion residue, but not for copper fouling, since you want a certain amount of metal laid in the lands and grooves. When a barrel is cleaned for copper fouling as well as carbon buildup and soot, begin by tracking how many shots are necessary to get stable, repeatable muzzle velocities and also predictable accuracy and precision. Each rifle will be slightly different, but the idea is to discover the fouling level and optimal length of time during which accuracy is at its peak - only finally removing the excess copper when accuracy begins to degrade.

I realize this video is old now, but ya don't need 24 hours. Just 30 to 45 mins keeping everything out of the sun, then you can do it again testing for your Fouled cold bore shot. Then go home and clean your bore well and repeat the test the next day. Even doing it a third day, you should see a pattern begin to emerge and you'll be able to "pattern" your "Clean cold bore" AND your "Fouled cold bore" shots. I had an older 30-06 Browning A-Bolt that would ALWAYS shoot the first clean cold bore shot low and to the right, but then the subsequent 3 round group was perfectly in the bullseye. Once I figured that out I could zero the rifle to be in the bullseye on that first shot, then the subsequent 3 round group would be high and to the left of the bullseye. I didn't care about the 3 round group zero I wanted the "clean cold bore" zero and that's what I got.

I guess it might be surprising if you use solvent and then finding your shots are off the next time you go the range. Generally speaking you want to shoot a few rounds to verify the zero is still good before you make any sort of accurate shot.

And that is why I don't clean my bore until I notice a decrease in accuracy.

Sgt. Hein, when testing cold bore shots, whether with a clean or fouled bore, is it important to wait a specified amount of time between successive shots in order to let the barrel cool? Phrased differently, how quickly are you firing those groups of 3-5 shots? What standard does the AMU use to determine a "cold" versus a "hot" bore? Thanks for the video....

Why is a cold bore shot less accurate than a foul? What causes followup shots to be more accurate?

Heat and fouling. When metal heats up it expands a bit. The same is with your skin, believe it or not. If you put warm water on your face, it opens the pores up a little. The same is with metal and pretty much anything else out there.
