Pro Tools 2020.3.0 Video Problems | No Video (Just a Black Screen) FIXED

Being project free (or at least thinking I was), I decided to upgrade to Pro Tools 2020.3.0 to check out the new features; I now instantly regret this decision. In this video, I show you how to fix the issue of having just a black video screen with no picture displayed to work too.
To fix this issue, do the following and restart Pro Tools to get back in the game:
Go to /Library/Application Support/Avid/AVX2_Plug-ins and empty the contents of this folder if any.
Go to /Users/Shared/AvidVideoEngine and delete this folder.
I am currently not able to export my score to video and the session is crashing on me every time saying that source settings are not available. I'll update you all should I find a fix, but if anyone has found a fix to this, please let me know!

FOR ALL YOU GUYS ASKING HOW TO FIX THIS IN WINDOWS. 1. C > Program Files > Avid > Avx2 Plugins (Delete Content) 2. In Pro Tools go to SETUP > Preferences > Operation > Uncheck Enable GPU

Thanks for the info. This method did work. After opening the session and importing that video clip again, all of the files in the AVX2 Plugins folder were recreated as expected. I then closed PT and reenabled "Enable GPU," and it works great!

If anyone is having this issues on Windows PT the following steps worked for me: 1. Go to C:\Program Files\Avid\AVX2_Plug-ins and empty the contents of this folder. 2. Go to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Avid Video Engine and empty the contents of this folder, but DO NOT delete the actual folder - or PT video engine will not start. (Avid FatalErrorReports will repopulate after you reboot pro tools) 3. Restart PT 4. Go to Preferences/Operation in PT and uncheck 'Enable GPU' After much frustration this solved the issue for me - and I now believe that the 'black screen' issue has something to do with the 'Enable GPU setting' - which might be preventing video playback. Thank you very much for this video. Straight to the point and solved the issue I was having after updating from PT Ultimate 2020.11 to 2021.7 (video output black all the time). Right clicking the video window also made pro tools crash. Erasing the folders fixed everything.

OMG I LOVE YOU- Brilliant. this was driving me bonkers after my upgrade, this was THE fix. Thank you. Shame on Avid for making us work this hard for such simple BASIC F'n functionality. And I teach this stuff, how are my students supposed to fix this sh*t??

Hi Michael! Thanks for the videos. I am wanting to do a feature length film and I am new to filmmaking and scoring for film. I am curious about the process of editing in Premiere Pro for editing and then exporting the files for scoring and audio mixing in Pro Tools. I have read there was some difficulty in getting things to works between the two softwares, people have said they weren't really compatible and certain things get screwed up in the process. I was wondering what your workflow is like, what editing software do your clients use and if you have had any difficulties with that process. Do you have any videos on this particular subject by the way? Hope to see more content on your film scoring process. Thank you.

Hi Johnny, glad you found my channel… It can be tricky for sure, but avid had gotten much better at implementing video codecs into Pro Tools which have made life way easier… I use both Premier and Pro Tools myself. For newer versions of protools it was because I had a 2nd video track. Playback was black screen until I deleted the 2nd blank video track.

For 'No Valid Same as Source Resolution' I found the bounce can't be longer than the video track, and you must not have any gaps in the video track

the problems are not just with working to picture. straight audio sessions are messed up with 2020.3 and no better in 2020.5. i've experienced this on two highly speced out Mac rigs and two Windows computers as well. CPU usage is wack and too many crashes. had to downgrade to 2019.6

For older versions of Pro Tools I have other solution. My video was in 30 FPS. Try to change session framerate to 29.97 even if video is 30fps and then it started playing. Also you can change framerate of the video through converter like Shutter Encoder to 29.97 and it will work.

This didn't work for me sadly. It's so frustrating because works fine on both studio macs, but not on my macbook, so can't bring certain sessions home.

I'm on windows as well, I found the files that he was talking about. the avid ax2 should be under the windows (C:) drive (assuming default installation path. You should find that under This Pc in file explorer), then program files (not program filesx86), then avid, after that you should be able to see and open the avid ax2 folder and do what you need to there (I recommend backing them up to a back up drive first just in case, I found the files but havent tried deleting them yet). The avid video engine is in the (C:) drive as well but this time go to users, public, public documents, and avid video engine should be right there Edit: This does not work on windows, video engine breaks if you do this. Don't delete anything

For Windows, this is what I did: I went to C:\Program Files\Avid\AVX2_Plug-ins and emptied the contents of this folder. I didn't bother deleting the video engine folder as I came across issues and Pro Tools would just crash. You only need to empty the contents of the AVX2_Plug-ins folder. Hope this helps! (it worked for me)

i found out, installing quick time alternative helped with video playback. everytime it doesn't work just install quicktime alternative.

Agreed. 30 years using Fairlight / Akai / Soundstation / EVO / Pyramix / Cubase / Logic / every time AVID show up to demo - cannot launch system , let alone present a worthwhile alternative. Ultimately - Forced to use PT . Absolute dogshit. hey ho.

This guys at avid are incompetent. You pay a fortune for a daw that doesn't even work properly. I have Studio One and on it I had zero compatibility issues, zero video issues and it doesn't fucking crashes because the IT department wasn't coding with their asses. Damn stupid industry standard.
