I'm not a counselor but I am a PTSD sufferer and this video is life changing for me. Although I've overcome many of the symptoms of PTSD, namely depression, anxiety and panic attacks, I still had a lingering dual addiction of gambling and alcohol. I thought I had beaten my PTSD but I now realize that I was minimizing these symptoms. Thank you so much. This video opened up my eyes.

wow...casinos a place where women in abusive relationships (perhaps abuse exacerbated by partner's gambling addiction) can escape...also through a gambling addiction. hits home. my bf is an action gambler and i'm an escape gambler...i didn't develop a gambling addiction til my relationship got (verbally and emotionally) abusive. i try to take responsibility for my addictions (3 years sober from heroin and alcohol) and my own addictive nature runs very deep, from my own emotional and mental issues to a lifelong lack of respect for money with the gambling. but there are certain cycles and dynamics that make it all worse/act as a trigger. thank you for this vid. your other (longer) compulsive gambling vid was wonderful as well.

@@DocSnipes Thank you! Apparently I wasn't done with the addictions after getting substance-sober...which I'm guessing isn't unique to me, gotta feed our brains in that early starved recovery period somehow. Ties into what you say here about risk factors for gambling...they're also risk factors for other addictions. Gambling has been a huge wake-up call that I have to deal with my underlying issues that have led to my addictions. It's been easier to stay sober from substances, even food, by just controlling my environment to avoid them. Gambling is always a click away, a bigger challenge to self-control and a huge spotlight on the vices and pathologies it's been easier to pretend I don't have because it's easier for me to stay substance-sober. Your vids have helped me think about my issues as self-control and escaping my strong emotions, which believe it or not I haven't really thought of my substance addictions as. sort of, they feel good, that's why I did them. Gambling doesn't even feel "good"...so why do I do it? Escape and numbing, front and center here. which of course my substance issues were also So what i find useful in general is the more holistic/CBT-y approach in your vids ... like...less neurochemically/addiction jargony and more mental and emotional risk factors. Helps put it in perspective for me. Gambling speaks to something deeper in my soul that I can't escape and your vids break that down well, particularly here with the alexthymia bit. The soldier thing was interesting too and I wonder if that's all trauma-related or something about being on high-alert, if that primes the brain for more risk-taking. The addict lifestyle itself is a rush, an entire fight-or-flight mode that gives us meaning and focus. Maybe addictions aren't always about numbing pain from trauma but can be about creating and replaying the chaos in which we feel most comfortable so aside from the reflection prompts i appreciate all the interesting examples/studies in your vids, helps keep the attention of an addict like me lol
