In the 17th and 18th Century, sailing ships from England en-route to the American colonies, would load up the ship with cobblestones. This made for smoother sailing. In the Colonies, they unloaded the cobblestones and replaced the weight with goods like tobacco and lumber. Even now, many of the old East Coast cities have cobblestones under their streets.

I've used your procedural "cobblestone" procedure with some modifications to create a stone wall for a castle. Looks much better than the texture-mapped images of stone and brick because you don't run into the tiling repeat problem, which just loooks cheesy. Thanks for this, and do keep up the good work!!!!!

Hi! just wanted to check if this material is compatible with a tileable texture map? I've been trying to set one up including the displacement map but the baked textures aren't looking anything close to the original material. Im baking all of the textures in a 2k resolution but I don't think that would be altering the look all too much. Im imagining the main culprit to be the mix shader not being used properly when baking the diffuse but im not sure how to troubleshoot what went wrong.

If I would want to lets say create a medieval marketplace and I want this material to be my floor, would I place a Mappind Node in front of the Voronoi and Noise Texture with a Value Node connected to the scale? Would that be the correct way to scale it up or in this case scale the cobblestone down? :D Thanks for the tutorial!

You should put the Mapping node before the textures. Then you can use the mapping to change the scale of the textures.

Any help would be great thanks.

@RyanKingArt

Hmm, there are a few things that might be speeding up my preview render: For one thing, I'm using the Linux operating system, and on Linux, Blender actually render's faster. Another thing, is that I turned down all of the light paths to basically 0, and that makes it render faster. Also, I turned on the viewport denoising, so it smooths out the preview and you can get a better result with less samples. I have an RTX 2080 super by the way. Hope these tips help!

I'm making a scene where one of the foreground element is the cobble stone. and when the light meet those hard peaks it's really jarring.

My cobblestones looked like pyramids with their pointy tops. You've probably discovered this solution already, but just in case: Beginning at 05:35, Ryan suggests moving the "Color 1" control of the "Darken" node almost to the top of the scale to obtain a very light gray color. Setting this control very high - or even at the top of the scale - flattens the tops of the cobblestones. Hope this helps!

If you use the N-Panel in the Shader Editor to edit your nodes, you get larger sliders. I use that all the time for colour ramps especially because my vision isn't that great.

Well its a pretty detailed material. So yes, it might be a bit laggy. I would recommend using Cycles. I have found that Eevee is more laggy when using Procedural materials.
