This looks so cool, it raises the bar for world generation so much. Imagine a Starwars game or other Sci-fi game where you could have entire solar systems at war. Although im not looking forward to those fetch quests.

This feature in Unreal Engine 4.25+ is NOT a planetary system. The video showcases predominantly the methods which game developers can now use to simulate correct atmospheric scattering that planets often require to look realistic, however the concept of a full playable game space in a spherical format does not exist out of the box. The sphere you're seeing here is extending out from the playable game area in a very visually convincing way, but it is important to note that outside of the still very flat playable landscape the surrounding 'planet' is just a visual representation and in no way constitutes a playable/walk-able surface. This would require significant reworking of the physics code to support omni-directional gravitational forces, as well as a complete re-write of the code that forms the landscape editing system in Unreal Engine. This is a visual-only solution at present time. That being said, I'd be happy to be proven wrong. Perhaps in future versions of the game engine they will do the other required work to allow fully navigable planets, but for now that is absolutely not the case without significant reworking from game developers using the engine.

I hope Epic does it in a way that wouldn't affect our current workflows. The last thing I want is my player sticking to the cube on my small planet because the cube is heavier than my planet. Also we would have universal coordinates along with the current global ones. This whole thing brings a lot of concern but if it can be done right, it would be "game changing".

I think you might have missed the point. Yes, there are games that have had full planets before, such as No Man's Sky or Star Citizen or Flight Simulator. This isn't novel tech, and isn't what people are excited about. What the excitement is about is having an open-ended, flexible, performant, beautiful planet generation/rendering system built into Unreal, so devs can just drop it in and start work on their game's content without fuss or having to reinvent the wheel. Dealing with massive amounts of geometry at massive scales is always a hurdle in gamedev, and usually requires lots of optimizations to get things to work smoothly in the context of your gameplay. If Unreal has generalized that and provided it for free, that's a huge win.
@slippydouglas
@slippydouglas 4 жыл бұрын

@slippydouglas
@slippydouglas 4 жыл бұрын
@brethnew IMHO, programming is a high-skill trade that isn’t for everyone. There’s lots of promotion out there to “just learn to code!” but it’s not that simple- to be able to program effectively, one needs to learn the fundamentals and study the intricacies of specific technology systems and practice, practice, practice, not unlike other high-paid skilled fields such as mechanical engineering or medicine or law. It’s true that there are simpler programming languages that’ll allow you to learn how to make useful things quickly and easily. But what you gain in simplicity you lose in flexibility and performance. For simple tasks, that might be fine, but if you want to create something that pushes up to the capabilities of what computer systems are capable of in 2020, you need to actually understand how the computer works and how to have control over that stuff with a professional-capability programming language and APIs. And that’s not even touching on the art of software architecture, and how quickly you can code yourself into a corner if you know only how to code, not how you _should_ code. It’s a high-paid professional engineering field that takes years and years to get good at for a reason. It’s not magic. A good starting point for you might be a more friendly game coding environment like one using Python, or Unity using C# (Unity’s recommended design patterns skip over a lot of the complexity of C#). It won’t give you full power, but you’ll be able ti have some fun with it and learn as you go. I still, in 2020, recommend finding a good learn-to-code-language-X-for-game-engine-Y book to get started- most online tutorials just don’t have the step-by-step depth for you to actually understand what you’re doing. But don’t expect to “get gud” in 6 months. It can easily take years or a decade to reach a cutting-edge professional level of game dev or other programming aptitude.
@Desenrad

It's actually not a proper planet, as in, a terrain object on which you could place other objects, or gameplay. It's "just" skybox, it's non-interactive scenery. You still have to build the actual playable space the same way, as normally, which means the same limitations (as you see in standard today's games) still apply. I have no doubts that they will sooner or later expand it to actual playable whole-planet spaces, but I think that's... at least 5 years away. At least. (That's why the video is called what it's called, it's a fancified skybox (for now).). ((Unless I've missed a huge part of its settings/features, somehow, which is possible, since I don't work with UE much, but... not that probable, just considering the tech and how huge an update would actual playable planets have to be. It's something of a size that is for a full version jump, imo, UE5.0)) Of course it's very cool nonetheless.
@outlander7370
@outlander7370 4 жыл бұрын
Isn't it actually a terrain object though and its the spherical shader from the marketplace making the illusion of a sphere from that terrain object?
@MidnightSt
@MidnightSt 4 жыл бұрын
@@outlander7370 No. At least as far as I know. What you see to be the "ground of the planet" is some procedural texture or mesh generated in GPU. It has no actual collidable geometry. And then, in the middle of that, there's a tiny square of actual terrain object which contains the actual playable area. That's why I every demo you only see them zooming into/out of a single specific tiny spot on the "surface" of the "planet", and they don't do any "planet-round" flybys. If you had an actual terrain object large enough to be sphere-mapped onto the whole diameter of the planet, you'd be back in "maybe in 5 years at the soonest" town, since with a terrain of that size, if you still want to keep all the possibility for detail that the terrain has in normal circumstances, that's a huge technical challenge spanning across all the game's systems - asset streaming, LOD, not only graphical, but also simulation-wise, managing which entities run when and if/how they interact, etc. Which isn't really even a thing you can have a proper generic solution for, since each game's needs would be different about what and how to simulate even when it's offscreen, on the other side of the planet, and such. This here in video is (again, as far as I know from having played around with the (current state of the) system) is literally just two things: 1. physically simulated atmosphere 2. some procgen gpu texture (or mesh generated via technique similar to tesselation) being bent by that spherical shader you're thinking of.

They want to surpass Star Citizen tech, but they won't because their engine isn't 64bit and they've never done proper R&D to make such thing happen, because big planetary MMOs is not the kind of stuff Epic Games believe in, and is also not the kind of stuff devs using their engine have the budget for. Remember, Unreal Engine is only attractive to so many devs because the initial cost is very low.

A few others have as well but all roughly in the same genre. But agree with the why , especially when many games have trouble filling larger open worlds. And just because you can render a planet does not mean it will run when you start adding more than just terrain, even worse when it's multiplayer as one of the biggest overheads is player interactions. However this being pursued might spill over into games that could use slighter larger zones like the latest Mechwarrior.

Pretty cool stuff, but like you I want true-to-life-sized planets in games. Elite Dangerous has spoiled me on that to the point where I [arguably] unfairly disparage Star Citizen, Yes Woman’s Land, and Dual Universe for *not* having true-to-life-sized planets.

Sure we have planets, but can it handle assets and entities? Edit: I’m sure they thought that game devs should not have *just* a planet and do nothing with it, but still, to what extent can UE4 handle these?
@TilW
@TilW 4 жыл бұрын
No, we dont have planets and I am actually very surprised that nobody here seems to know that. Also, this is not 4.26 but was already implemented with 4.25 and does NOT simulate planets in any way but only provides atmosherical rendering can make your planet seem round from higher up. No planets, no new gravity, "only" (way) better atmospherical rendering.

Won't be useful until they do something about servers. Its kind of weird how everything about games have progressed with the exception of player numbers, almost every FPS etc still has a maximum of 100 players per server.

Is a planet sphere or a plane with spherical shader??
@benhardwiesner6963
@benhardwiesner6963 4 жыл бұрын
Well as the video was called, I think this is truely just a sky and atmosphere system... The planet stuff definitely was not a true fully walkable 3d planet. Epic stated a while ago that they are not interested in reworking their physics to support directional gravity... This would only be a part of whats required for full sized planets and definitely a must. The terrain generator doesnt get much love either. That would have to be remade from scratch too On top of this a whole planet is too big for UE4s mathematics... They'd need a way to split single planets into partly spherical levels and stitch them together which would make it a pain in the arse to move or rotate planets..... Thats just waaay too much thats needed to release such thing in this short amount of time and the starter project with all of those indepth systems would be a complete mess compared to the others If someone wants to release a full planet game, he should require the knowledge thats needed to set this up anyway... Thats soo specific for a gameengine to support it built in.

What about small planets for a simple arcade game? (think of a Super Mario Galaxy clone).
@benhardwiesner6963
@benhardwiesner6963 4 жыл бұрын
Well you always can do this. With C++ or Blueprint but that goes for the whole new atmosphere system. Everything was possible before but now they built those functionalities as easy sliders into the engine. They have added nothing regarding actual planets to make them easier to set up. Mario galaxy as far as I know doesnt simulate any gravityfields but instead simply rotates it to the closest planet... Thats not all that hard to set up yourself with only blueprint if you wish. But this update wont help you for that because its only for atmosphere
