Beautiful thick combs. I use the kitchenaid mixer to break up the combs and press through the honey press. Very easy.

A great system for warmer climates, hence the "kenyan top bar" name. Here in Canada our horizontal hives need to be insulated for cold winters.. and the frames have to be deeper so the colony will cluster with enough winter stores as they slowly migrate upwards on their comb. The horizontal method of keeping bees, like the Kenyan Top Bar or Layens hives are such a revolution in the era of industrial langstroth hives... which is funny, because horizontal hives have been standard for thousands of years before stacking boxes came along.

That looks so nice. Beautiful thick combs. This season in Adelaide was strange here at Largs in SA, up and down a lot, and it's my first season with ktbh so I ended up only taking a very small amount of honey. It really is superb honey though :) I brushed the bees off the comb at the hive and cut the comb straight into a strainer bag and bucket. The sticky bars went straight back in. Not a single bee was lost. From there I hung the bag over the bucket and mashed the comb by hand with gloves on. After 24 hours hanging, and a couple of good squeezes, the remaining wax was pretty dry and the honey was perfect. Thanks for sharing the video. I would love to try a press one day.

Did you say a swarm just flew into the box? How did you entice them?

You can entice swarms into empty hives by putting a few drops of lemongrass oil in the hive and by rubbing some propolis on the internal walls and around the entrance early spring. Placing some old brood comb in the hive works great

Bees would do that aspecialy if u a bee keeper and u have empty boxes sitting around that bees have already lived in , the scent of the wax and comb would attract swarms
