Our first time to ever raise our own meat chickens was a success!! Only 8 weeks ago we were getting these chicks in the mail, and today their journey has ended! We were Blessed to have Jason and our good friends (The Planks) from Church to come over and help! It really made the process enjoyable and timely! We hope you enjoy the video!

Fly away chickens, fly away. I have a lot of respect for you guys. I could raise the chickens but wouldn't be able to kill and process them myself. You do what you need to take care of yourselves with homesteading. I was told by someone I couldn't be a pioneer or homesteader because I can't kill and process animals., I would have to pay someone to do it for me.

I loved this video because of how well everyone was getting along and because of Mrs Plank. Her cutting skills were worth the whole video. I always enjoy Jacob, Alex and Jason, but that lady taught me something I can do at my home with a store bought chicken! I will never process a chicken as I do not own any chickens , but I have watched at least 5 videos on the subject ( because I like the people doing the videos) . Sorry Dutch, Lumnah Acres , Hidden Heights Farm , and Weed em and Reap , this is my favorite video because I can do something even if I do not own meat chickens.

I agree, although we never took the breast off the bone. She didn't quarter the chicken like I thought she would. She cut up the chicken. We'd cut the back in two, and that was my favorite piece because there wasn't much meat on it. If making chicken stock out of it, save the neck (without the head) and make broth out of it. I just looked at a video on cooking chicken feet as they do in other countries, but not me.

Growing up, my family always processed whole chickens but referred to as broilers. I was also taught to return borrowed items in the same way as you. If it got damaged or even broke down, you repaired or replaced, then returned. Plus it was done in a timely manner or when agreed upon. The processing and your comment reminded me of good memories. Thank you for sharing.

I had a nice chuckle every time Jacob said he was "scolding" the chickens. I had visions of him "yelling" at them for not growing bigger. Mrs. Planks really knows her way around a butchering knife. If I was 1,000 miles or so closer I would come sample her baked goods for sure.

Ginger Reid, you might want to go watch "Sow the Land" . They just butchered theirs as well. Lorainne has a curved scoop method that cleans the cavity of lungs and other things in the groves of the back. If I had been blessed with a daughter, I wanted to name Ginger Marie. My nickname was Ginny or Gina ( gin ah). It isn't very often I run across someone whose last name is spelled like mine. Take Care

Ages ago we raised chickens for eggs, just enough to feed the family and we butchered extra roosters and hens that weren't laying any longer. Never raised meat chickens per se. My wife is the one that knew how to process the chickens. Since we only killed one at a time it was a lot different than your methovd. She said that to get tender chicken it had to be relaxed when it died so we held the chicken and petted it until it was calm and then she slit the juggler vein with a very sharp knife and we held the chicken, keeping it calm until it bled to death then held it upside down to finish bleeding out. Did the scalding and plucked it by hand then she cut it up the way you did. She was right, it was tender chicken. Thought you would be interested in hearing the story. My wife was from the Philippines. Loved your video.

Good video as always! Having your friend show how to cut up a bird was great as so, so many young people have absolutely no clue how it's done! She also cut out the Tenders from the breasts. Cant forget those "chicken fingers" that everyone loves to dunk! lol. Using all parts of the bird is the best. Blood meal is a common additive to gardens and diluting the collected blood with water is basically the same thing. Composting the feathers really enriches the nutrients in your compost for the garden. The bones are cooked for broth and if really trying to use it all can be dried & ground for bone meal. Giving your waste to the hogs is great! They in turn grow out pork roasts, chops and Bacon etc with them! lol Next time around you'll have the water temp correct & set to memory to keep checking. Don't feel bad as the temp & time in the water is a common area to have a problem. You'll also go faster as the process will be fresh. Glad to see that Jason along with the kids are learning a very useful skill to help them in the future.

Wow I have seen that plucker in a couple videos and boy do I wish we would have one of those about 35 years ago I would have been nice we used to use a butter knife to go the opposite direction to get the pin feathers out it seemed like it took us forever. We did what we called broilers fed them for 2 months and I think it was the last week or 2 we did a finisher and kept electrolytes in there water and OMG 😱 they were delicious and they were 12 - 13 pounds each give or take a pound or 2. If I was many years younger we would do it again. Thank you 2 for being you and being yourself you are so awesome 😎 keep your gizzards and hearts they are soooooo good we didn’t like the liver yuck anyway we enjoyed you and your help it was fun to watch the bakery lady she made it look so easy. Wow very impressive how quick Mrs. Plank is to process those chickens! The lungs were the hardest part for me to get out when we processed out first chickens. We need to get a plucker. Looks much easier than the dry pulling that we did. Granted we only were processing two chickens.

You know, they should really add a love button on here and not just have a like. :-) I've never seen a plucker before. That's pretty cool! Sure beats back in the day when I was a kid growing up we had to hand pluck them. Tell Nettie we (I) really appreciate her showing us how to cut up a chicken. I have to say....I've always bought chicken pieces, never whole, so I've never cut up a chicken before.

Those wing tips...my little Cairn Terrier loves those. Nothing for her to choke on & she knows they are all hers! Boil those backs & the rest in a big cook pot until they fall apart...then you can strain the broth (I add salt, pepper and some poultry seasoning while boiling)...let the broth cool in fridge overnight...the grease comes to the top, scrape that off & put into a small jar ( I freeze it to keep it good)...same with the broth, freeze it to keep it good. All the little bits of meat, etc. can be given to critters (even chickens).

Hi Jacob, Richard here from Rooster J Acres. I use a metal coat hanger to catch my chickens, bend one end like a hook, and all you got to do is hookem by the feet. Easy catch.
