Hey folks,
In today's video we are going to be processing the sweetgum that we previously ran through the kiln.
We will be planing, edging, and making it into Tongue and groove boards.
If you have any questions that we did not answer in the video, please feel free to ask and we will do our best to answer each one.
We want to give a huge shoutout to Solomon, he helps us so much editing some of the videos. Be sure to check out his channels.

I cut a lot of gum. Your points on defects are all valid. I watched the one before this and the only thing I would recommend is it a slow controlled dry. Strapped and weighted with double stickers - sloooooowly. It's wonderful if it's spalted. I leave most my logs for several months, especially maple and gum, because it's great for interior or veneer, but get funky punky without some cover or sacrifice logs over them. The only other success I've had is 9/4 or bettet and resawing after air drying. Pretty stable and the defect logs are good for those that like to pour and fill. Some very interesting character. I am super jealous(in a good way) of that moulder and am very excited for you. It's a goal for me. That wall will be lovely. Looking forward to seeing it.

I have a mill but have never sawn any of it. I have always thought it would make a pretty and durable floor if a person could have the patience and do it like you are doing .I do have a cant hook that i have broken three hickory handles out of and the one in it now i made myself from black gum. It has been tough for that use. I have burned many a stick of it as firewood. Good videos, y'all be safe!

I'm litterly getting ready to do a bunch of poplar tomorrow as far as the T&G goes .But our boards have a bead on one side.. that's tricky. same shaper as you have. lucky only about 130 bf. I've not done gum lumber in the T&G . just lap sidding and studs and other framming lumber.. I'm sure it will look great.

I own a Curved Plywood plant, we make thousands of curved seats and backs out of gum veneer. We have to use it instead of poplar for its strength. We are in NC but all that gum is from Alabama. Nice video

@@BeardedLumber all the veneer mills have shut down. We buy all our core veneer from Alabama. We do face grade veneers from local where they are buying flitches and work it into face veneers.

I was surprised that you planned to use it outside. It's not recommended for outdoor use because it has no resistance to decay and can warp. Sweetgum was widely used in the south for moldings because you have long, mostly knot free boards that machine beautifully and it is cheap. In current times, it has probably been replaced with MDF.

In my experience sweet gum cuts good even chips good . I have ran it up to 15 inch with excavator through chipper . But the forestry mulcher doesn’t like it and it’s very hard to split with a wood splitter.
