Tip for baby cloths you're saving... Take a photo and maybe even cut a small piece of the fabric if the item isn't in good shape, then find a photo of your child in that outfit & make a scrapbook/memory page with the photo of your child wearing it & the photo of the dress & the piece of fabric from the dress. These make great pages. Your memories are triggered by seeing the item, whether its in person or from a photo. You will still have the memory just not the item. Hugs ~Samantha

My grandma and I used to do the crossword puzzle in the tv guide together. I would call her each week and we would see how far each of us had gotten and help each other with the ones we didn’t get. When she passed, the first thing I did was go in and get her last tv guide, it is my most treasured possession.

I have my grandfather's bible. He died when I was 2 so I never knew him, but I can see how he viewed the world by his notes in the margin. He was a farmer and when Noa was building the ark, my grandfather noted how many cords of wood it would have taken him to build it. LOL Love that!

Well done! Sentimental stuff is hard! My forever keep is the notes from the speech my mother held when hubby and I got married 2004. It is handwritten, a bit crinkley from nervous hands and filled with happiness for us, pride and joy. ❤ My mum passed away very unexpectedly eight months ago, wich of course makes it all the more precious. ❤

Made it to the end! My keepsake is a baby dress. It was a gift to my mom at my baby shower in the days when you did not know the sex until born. The dress was bought by my grandmother. I wore it. My daughter wore it and my granddaughter wore it! Only a few years ago my mom's sister told me that my great grand mother was along when my grandmother bought it. So this dress has connections to my great grandmother, my grandmother, my mom, me, my daughter, and my granddaughter, Six generations! I have a photo with my daughter wearing it. One with my granddaughter wearing it. And one with all three of together as my granddaughter is wearing it. The dress is in my memory box.

I found my mother’s recipe for Applesauce Cake in her handwriting! I laminated it and put it in my memory book. It has stains from being handled and while making the cake. I lost my first husband when he was 22 yrs old and I had saved a few things I knew my daughter would love to keep because she was still a baby and didn’t have many memories of him. I put them in a shadow box and she loved them! Great job on what you are doing!🥰👍💜

A letter my cousin wrote me when he was about 9 years old and I was about 14. He passed away at 19 years old. That letter reminds me of our amazing relationship. Our childhood was so amazing.

Not a whole lot was saved for my older brother and I as our dad had remarried and after he passed, his wife only gave us a few things. I do have a knitted sweater made by my grandmother that my mom wore and now I have it. I also have my grandmother’s wedding ring. One thing I kept was an old stuffed bunny rabbit (whose ears are long gone) but on his back feet are slippers my great grandma made for me. When I outgrew them, I put them on my bunny…his name is a Peter and he is a faded lime green with a white belly. He is the only thing from my childhood that I kept.

I have an old plastic horse that looks like a wooden one. It was a gift from my grandparents, which raised me more than my parents did. I love the memories it shares and will never get rid off as long as I live.

Hey, Shannon. 🌞 As a keepsake, I realised I had a very unique and special one already: the tattoo on my arm, that I got with my dad when I was 16. He passed away from cancer 3 years ago, but he'll live through me with that tattoo forever. ❤🙏🏻

I saved fabric when I made my wedding dress and four years later made a christening gown. That is very precious to me because my three girls wore it and then my granddaughter wore it for her baptism.

I listened to your video as I was outside gardening this morning 🌷 I got so excited when I heard you’re planning to downsize! I had the same moment a few years ago, “but what am I going to do with all this stuff?!” I put off moving and started decluttering. I was so ruthless. It felt so good to work towards my goal. We ended up selling our 7 bed, 5 bath, 2 kitchen house (what was I even thinking?!) for a 3 bed, 1 bath sweet little cottage in the city! I’ve never been happier. I used to spend everyday overwhelmed by stuff and cleaning. Now I have time to live a life! It makes me so happy when I hear others who are thinking of downsizing. In our culture, I didn’t know a life like this was possible for me! I grew up with the “bigger is better” mindset but it’s totally not! My Moms hand written recipes. Also I wanted to say I’m 65 and over the years I keep going over memories and every time I get rid of more. I have love notes from my husband who passed almost 10 years ago and love notes from my new husband. They make me so thankful for the amazing men in my life.

I have an antique bracelet my grandmother gifted me on my 18th birthday. It was given to her on her 18th birthday. But the most special thing is the hand written note she added explaining the history it being a graduation gift and how much she enjoyed it all those years ago. Your yearbook pictures are so pretty! Pages can be torn out of yearbooks and put into photo albums. Memory boxes for each child. Scan old letters and photos. I just did this and got rid of three garbage bags of frames, books, papers, ect. I feel so free!!

Congratulations on your jeans victory! My tip for sentimental kids clothes is space bags. You know the big vacuum seal plastic bags? I put the clothes I am feeling attached to in those; mark them with a post-it so I remember why I thought they were special and vacuum them up so they don’t take up much space, they are safe and I can move on. I go back periodically to check if my feelings have changed.

I was born in 85 also and graduated 2003! I hold my handwritten notes near and dear to my heart.

You will be happy to know that I took out the trash from all the rooms in the house , swept the floors, unloaded the DW, wiped down the counters, spot mopped the kitchen floor, PUPA in the DR, LR and master bedroom, made the bed and folded, hung and put away 3 loads of laundry. Get non-essential things out of your closet, or things that don't belong there and then, use that space to store valuable assets. I still put family photos in their frames in the bottom of drawers to keep them safe until I decide where to put them or take them out of the frames to put into photo albums. Also, you could roll up some of your favorite T-shirts and store them in drawers or under your bed in containers. I cherish photos of my children and grandchildren as they were growing up. I have several albums full of family photos.

My mum saved a dress and a jacket for me I’m one of five. So yes my little yellow dress means a bunch. I had two boys and my oldest was able to wear my jacket . It gave me such joy to see that on him. It also made me appreciate the quality of it. I’m saving it for my grand children someday 🥰🥰🥰🥰

A few sentimental items I cherish are my mom’s recipes and journals. She passed away almost 20 years ago and I’m grateful to have those items to bring back happy memories.

Wonderful job getting through that cupboard! I was celebrating with you when you found all your jeans fit and clapped out loud when you got to the end of the second box! Sentimental type things are the hardest and I've also found treasures unearthed from piles of things I kept because I didn't know whether I'd want it later - rather than asking the me at the time what I thought. Because, honestly, me at the time had no earthly idea what to do and ended up tucking whatever away for another day's decision.

Things that helped me: the toe-curl test. If I looked at something and my stomach clenched a little or my toes actually curled, it was gone. (I’m talking about you, letters from ex blaming me for something that was ALL YOU.) My daughter and I winnowed our yearbooks down to just senior year, but scanned some stuff into Photos. The constant reminder to myself that things are not people, and the memories are in my brain, not in the object. And being realistic about what would lift my daughter as opposed to burden her when I’m gone.

Decluttering sentimental items teally drains your energy, in my opinion it's best done in smaller sessions not to be overwhelmed, yet you went through so many items and decluttered so much! It's perfectly fine to admit we're not quite ready to let go of some items just yet. What I find important is to store them safely, well organised and in a place where I know where they are, then I can go back to that box at a later date and more often than not, the emotional connection is gone, or maybe just a pic of the object feels now enough. Now my external hard drive is one of my most priced possessions because of all the pics stored in it.

Awesome job! Keepsakes are so difficult to declutter. My two favorite keepsakes are a tea set and a musical piano figurine of my Nona's. She died when I was 12 and I loved her beyond measure.

The garland of notes, you should paint them holiday colors and use them as you decorate for the holiday you chose. It will be decorative, and you will always smile, thinking of when all those notes happened.

I keep a can of notes that my best friend Julia wrote me through the years. She passed away in 2008 at age 25 so they are super important to me- best friends for 14 yrs on earth ❤

I have a Christmas card my grandmother gave me. She passed away from cancer when i was 11. I'm now 34. Love seeing her handwriting.

A lovely vlog. My most treasured items are anything related to when my son was born (scan photos, armbands and footprint) and some letters my late aunt wrote to me. Nice to see her handwriting and read her words. She passed last December so I’m grateful I have those and they bring me comfort especially as her passing was rather quick (she was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer and died within six weeks of diagnosis). I’m not a sentimental person, but I have a few things I display so I can enjoy them every day. The rosary my great grandmother gave me on my wedding day. A picture of her in her garden (I’m a huge gardener). A few other things. I don’t have kids, so I don’t want someone to have to go through a bunch of stuff when I’m gone. You did a great job letting go!

When I was a little girl, we had a house fire. Many of my toys were thrown out. A few years later, we moved. The buyers took possession of a playhouse that my brother and I stored all our toys in. My reaction has been to hold my things in an open hand. I have given old family heirlooms to my children when they move out. My grandmother’s wedding ring, my great grandmother’s silver tea set, another grandmother’s China cocoa set. A few months ago, I went through a closet with my old yearbooks and photo albums. I only kept one; I’d been the yearbook editor in grade 12.

Nice Work, Shannon! You muscled through some hard items! Now here's a few tips: This year grab 2 clear acrylic Xmas balls at a craft store. Add those school tassels inside. Use them to decorate your tree annually. Such a fun remembrance! I recommend photographing those dresses from the past you did not want to get rid of. Save them to your computer storage and pass on the dresses to a family you know who can use them or thrift store, Now there is more space available in the closet. Dawn from the Minimal Mom suggests you only keep what *Currently fits you* in your closet. Box up the other items in smaller sizes as a time will tell bin. Donate the larger size items and stuff you wont wear, That leaves a lot more room in the closet and quiets the noises in our heads as the silent to do list we constantly battle.

One thing that helps me get ‘rid ‘ of my kids clothes is to give it to someone you know who can really need it. That way they can make someone else happy instead of only hanging in the closet.

You shifting from going through the stuff in the corner to go through clothes first/instead is the most relatable thing I've ever seen on YT. That's why I have piles of unfinished purging/organizing all over my house. I watched the video for camaraderie and inspiration. The one keepsake I will always keep are iron on patches that I've collected from all the states and national parks I've been to. Eventually, I want to put them all in a shadow box type display.

Maybe for the clothes you can take a picture of the outfits and make a memory album. You can revisit the memories that way. Another idea would be to make a blanket out of pieces of each clothing item. You can pass it down to the kids with the memories.

I’ll always keep my aunt Debbie’s hat and her crazy beads she always wore. She had special needs and lives with us 10years.

I have a collection of letters I wrote to my dad after we reunited when I was a teenager. He gave them to me before he passed 3 years ago. He had kept them for more that 40 years.

My brother is the only one who wrote me a letter when I was in basic training. I cherish that letter and will always keep it.

My keepsakes forever are the chatbooks I had with my friends at school and a novel I wrote at 11yo. I am very organized in the „sentimental section“ though. One shoe box and three albums. But I really want to make scrapbooks for my kids as babies like my mother did for me. Nothing fancy but with personal notes.

I have cleaned out two houses for deceased relatives. It helped me decide to let go of the yearbooks. I have been looking through each one and pulling out pictures I care about to scan into my own album. 99.9% of those albums are not personal memories.

I've kept a lot of cards from my grandmother with the letters that she wrote as she got older and lovely cards from my children who are grown up now and in there thirties 😊

A very kitch, glittery, glass, sugar cane ornament I got from my best childhood friend for Christmas when we were 13. She knew me so well. She got it from my favourite homewear store that was kitch overload to which I regularly dragged her. She was a full blown goth girl and yet she knew exactly what to get me. She killed herself the next year. It broke my heart. I cherish that ornament ♡ ( I have other lovely things she got me too but you said to mention one so...😂)

I have kept my parents wedding rings, wedding pictures, my high school and college yearbooks, letter jacket, majorette baton and a christening gown. I have one box about the size of your pink Dream box that has my special papers, old report cards, writings, drawings etc. If I want to add something and it doesn't fit, something else has to go. A keepsake item that I will always cherish is a photo of me and both my grandma's from when I was like 14. In fact, I have it in my living room! I'm in the process of decluttering ALL my closets...ugh it's a job...I have 2 down and 2 more to go which includes my clothes closet. I don't have kids but I have a friend who keeps a smallish "memory" bin for each of her 3 kids labeled with the child's name. In it she keeps only the really special items like a few baby/kid clothes, some artwork, a few photos, etc with the intention that each bin is a keepsake for that child that they take with them when they eventually move out. Maybe keep a memory bin for each of your kids and you can put your girls' dresses and other stuff that you can give to them when they're older in those. I thought it was so lovely that you still have your great grandma's letter from your birth, what a keepsake for generations to come! That's family history preserved! Now that you have asked the question, I don't really know the answer... so I'm gonna go through my pared down memory bins (I have two smallish ones) and see which one is the one I treasure the most. :)

I have my old cheerleading uniforms, letterman jacket, a couple stuffed animals, yearbooks etc. But my most favorite are my photo albums and CDs. I can get caught up laughing and crying if I have to get one down for a memory or just working in the closet, they are in. I will randomly text pictures to friends, and we chat about the past. It is very sweet. I am not super sentimental with my boy's stuff except it if has a photo of them on it, handprint, footprint that type of thing.

I have a tiny rubber Santa claus that my grandma had when I was a child. I keep it on my dresser...lol and bring it out only at Christmas . I also have my raggedy andy doll..I had raggedy andy not raggedy ann..for some reason. I'm 56 and he is definitely a little more raggedy than he was originally, but, I will never get rid of him.

I also have some things my mom made, like crocheted baby afghans and a wooden pheasant. I made memory bins for myself, my hubby and my son, plus one for my parents who both passed away, and one for special memories from the pediatric therapy clinic I used to own. I need to go through them again, because as I declutter other areas of the house, I stick stuff I find in them for "later" - can you say delayed decisions?? Lol! I love how real you are. Keep your year books, they are fun to revisit from time to time. Especially before a class reunion.

I cannot think of the one item. But, the other day I was going through some memorabilia of a trip my mom and I took to the 1982 World's Fair (my mom died at the young age of 54 in 1989). It was so interesting to see what was kept -- receipts from lunch on the road, hotel receipts, even a message she had received at one of the hotels which said, HR (her partner) had called and please call the office. It just reminded me so much of her. I was able to trash the receipts and some of the flyers from the local attractions -- but kept the note and some other things that had meaning to me.

My husband and I have bought a home for our retirement so we are in the midst of decluttering. Our new home is smaller but not as small as we had planned but definitely will be a lot less work for us. I don’t want to take all this clutter with us so I’m taking one day at a time and at least trying to sell or donate things as I can. As my health is compromised I’m happy just getting rid of things slowly as long as I’m seeing progress. You definitely don’t want to wait until last minute.😖

something I haven't been able to throw away until now (at the age of 42) is a 60 cm tall Alf 🙈. It sat in my mother's attic for years and earlier this year she said either she throws it away or I take it with me. She washed it and I drove it 450 km to my house in the passenger seat. Now he's sitting with us and I'm torn. I find him really ugly and can hardly watch the series anymore, but I still remember how happy I was when I got him when I was 8... Well, let's wait and see how it develops 😅. I really enjoyed the video Shannon. I suffered with you and was very happy when you found treasures again.❤

My niece really wants some of her jewelry, in particular, her pearls. I have beautiful pearls my husband has given me, so I asked my mother to leave them to my niece. I think it hurt her feelings. I tried to explain that my memories aren't tied to physical things. Perhaps that's weird, but that's how I feel. Your Grace is such a beautiful young lady. I’ve made small keepsake bins for each of my kids with baby clothes and memorabilia in them. I did have tote after tote saved but I went through the stuff with my kids and they didn’t want a whole lot so I really pared down. It was hard but we did it! My other really special keepsake is my mom’s baby doll. She’s an antique doll now. My mom was 40 years older than me and I’m 56 so it’s OLD. ;) Now for the doilies!!! My husband and I were the end of the line for doilies on both sides of our families. 😵‍💫 I’d be happy keeping a few favorites, maybe even one from each person but hubby wants to keep them all!
