In this Tech Talk, Mike covers the removal and installation of a lighter throttle return spring for a Mikuni TM40 carburetor. It's a fairly straight forward process with minimal tools needed to complete the installation.
If you have a TM40 on your bike and you seem to be getting "wrist pump" or are having a harder time doing longer rides, a lighter return spring might be the solution for you. These carbs were designed to fit into a Harley frame and motor with a heavier pull, not a smaller motorcycle like a dual sport where your riding position and demand on the throttle constantly is changing, thus creating more fatigue on the rider.

It's a fairly easy installation if you take your time. The biggest hurdle will be keeping tension on the throttle cam and aligning the holes for your pin to go through while installing. Shoving a small hex key into the hole to keep the throttle cam locked in place is very helpful during reassembly.

If you have a small pair of Channel Lock Pliers, you can use them on the roll pin for a much easier installation by squeezing it into place. Just make sure the alignment of the pin is good.

At 2:52 when that circular disk that you twist on the return spring, when lined up with the punch hole it doesn’t hit the stopper on the bracket when let go? Is that how it’s supposed to be?

What’s the story with the pump rod sticking? My new tm40 is only 3weeks old and the rods started to stick and nothing is near it . The only thing I can see is the little rubber sleeve at the bottom that seems to have stretched and is stopping it retracting back properly and as quick as it should be. Bit bad this carb isn’t even a month old

That's a great question. We've never come across this personally to evaluate the problem, but have heard of others having this issue. However, I haven't seen any remedies / reasons online. I would pull the float bowl off and start inspecting everything for the culprit. I suspect something is slowing the plunger from returning to the up-right position. Didn't even come out with a sledgehammer. Better to just deal with it than break the carb.

Finally managed to get it done. Sprayed carb cleaner in there and eventually it loosened it up. Lots of dirt. Thanks for the helpful video!
