Product Review Bowser HO General Electric U25B Locomotive, SP Bicentennial Scheme
In this product review, Dan takes a look at an HO scale U25B diesel locomotive from Bowser.
This model train is decorated in Southern Pacific's Bicentennial paint scheme. U25BE 6800 was one of three units to wear this color scheme, along with SP GP40P-2 3197 and Cotton Belt SD45T-2 9389.
As decorated, this model train best represents SP 6800 as it appeared between 1975 and 1979.
SP 6800 was one of only two upgraded U25BE locomotives on Southern Pacific's roster, and it spent most of its working career in Southern California, often shuttling cars between Los Angeles and West Colton.
Later renumbered 3100, this locomotive escaped the scrappers torch. It resides today at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, California, painted in SP's standard scarlet and gray scheme.
As usual, Dan evaluates the model’s packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
If you're a fan of Southern Pacific, GE U-boats, or red, white and blue Bicentennial colors, be sure to check out this review!

All that time spent doing reviews for the "other" channel probably helped a lot in terms of production values, comfort level / seeming relaxed while presenting, and a sense of what does and does not need to be in a review... to me those are the things that other model train reviewers often lack. There's a lot to be said for getting lots and lots of practice at something...

I ,personally,can overlook the minor details,as long as the damn thing is a sweet runner at slow speeds.To me, thats what sorts a good loco from an excellent loco.This loco looks like it is.Afterall,you put it on the layout & run it, & it runs extremely well, it it just a joy to watch.Thanks for the review.Always look for a product review from you,thanks. There is a lot to be said for a model that runs well. If I had to pick, I'd rather have one that ran well vs. a nice looking paperweight. You're welcome for the review. Thanks for watching!

Very cool model despite the inaccuracies. I know you're an SP fan so I imagine this model was of particular interest to you. I agree about the lack of quality for the price. But sometimes you're forced to make purchases if you want a certain unit that is only made by a single builder. At least those of us that lack your scratch and custom building skills.

I did ask for this one specifically when Mark gave me a list of models to pick from. U25Bs are too old for my 1990s era, but I figured a lot of other SP fans might also be interested. And you're right, at this moment, anyway, it's pretty much the only game in town. Thanks for watching!

Great review. I cant get past the narrow walk way on the rear of the loco as well as the size of the ladder. When I looked back at the prototype, I couldn't even believe how chunky Bowser had made it. Thanks

I thought the proportions were a little off, too. It's not so bad if a model doesn't have all the little details, as those can usually be added with aftermarket parts, but it's hard to fix the overall shape. Thanks for watching!

Nice review Dan! I think the Bowser U25B is the former Stewart Hobbies tooling. Rapido Trains is coming out with more detailed model of the U25B.

You may be right about that. Someone else pointed that out as well. I'd be interested to see the Rapido version, though after the last couple I'm a little reluctant to buy more Rapido diesels. Thanks for watching!

One thing Rapido mentioned in the ads for their new U25B is how theirs would be the first version of this to have the class lights positioned on the nose properly (at the edge and angled outwards rather than facing straight ahead the way they'd be on an SD40-2, etc.) and yeah, now that I look at the Bowser model after hearing that, I can definitely see the discrepancy between the place they chose to put the class lights and where they are in prototype photos. Still a cool model in a cool paint scheme... fun review.

That would be cool if the Rapido model is more correct. I hope they do a good job on that one. Thanks for watching!

Good review I have all three bicentennial units (2 Athearns) but the Bowser unit i was also disappointed with the quality ( decal smear?) on one letter but I do love the bicentennial paint for now it’s a display unit.

Great review Dan. Great for the 1990s pretty well sums it up for these, which were refreshes of the old Stewart U25B. I have a couple of them in SP scarlet & gray and they are acceptable models (nice runners) but not worth $299 MSRP for sure

Some others mentioned Stewart as well with Kato drives. I never had any of those but I have plenty of Kato diesels, so I'm sure they run great. Thanks for watching!

No cab interior? A no-go!
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi Жыл бұрын
A cab interior has come to be expected these days (and is much better than a gaping void with nothing inside like a lot of models used to have). That's why I think this model would have been really cool by 1995 standards. It's definitely not on the same level with most of the higher-end diesels being produced today. Thanks for watching!

No, you're right, there is another bell down there. I'm surprised that I missed it. Good eye! The one on the roof is in the right place for the real locomotive. Thanks for catching that!

Neat vid. It has detail shortcomings but at least it's not out of the box with a ton of stuff broken like recent athearn stuff. Apparently genesis 2.0 just means they assemble it blindfolded and then play kickball with the box.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose that the more parts are on a model, the more likely it is that one of them will be broken or detached. Maybe that's the trade-off with more vs. less detail. I still think it's really disappointing when you open a model that cost hundreds of dollars and find something broken. Thanks for watching!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that dislikes the screw-in box style. My least favorite is the late 2000s Athearn Genesis packaging that were a foam box with a board screwed into the bottom of the locomotive, and in the case of the engine I have, a WC F45, the fuel tank separate in the box, that you need to remove any time you want to box the locomotive.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi Жыл бұрын
I have a couple of those Athearn Genesis boxes. Awful. It really makes the box mostly useless. I'm glad model companies seem to have gotten away from that. Thanks for watching!

I could be wrong, but the engine looks as if the body sits too high over the trucks. I’d be curious as to what the measurement is from the bottom of the sill - down - on the prototype. I bet the model is high. There’s also a lot of open space under the fuel tank. The proportions just look off to me.
@DanielCortopassi

I didn't have any drawings of U25Bs to compare the model to, but I agree that some aspects seemed a little off, like the front and rear walkways that I mentioned in the review. You may be right that there are other dimensional issues as well. Thanks for watching!

@DanielCortopassi

In my SP Consist Build series, I showed how I lit the numberboards on a Kato SD40, though I'd already done some work previously to prepare them. I'm considering revisiting that subject in another video. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nice review. I really don't care for the interior of a diesel loco. I wish Genesis would leave them out and lower the price. Like outside details though. 👍
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 2 жыл бұрын
I like interiors when they're visible. It looks better than having nothing in there, but it doesn't have to be super detailed since most of the time you can't see it that well. I agree that the outside details are way more important. Thanks for watching!

I think it would be funny if you did a review of most Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive models that aren't brass or a Berkshire. I just picked up an older but new in the box Broadway USRA light mikado 586. I haven't seen any photos of the real 586 but 599, my athearn genesis mikado, looks nothing like the real one beyond after being just acquired from the Lake Erie and Western. For these to be accurate to nkp prototype, they need nearly complete front end rebuilds chiefly needing the addition of flying number boards, air compressors on the pilot deck with shrouds over them and a mars light, then changing the headlight and cutting off and replacing the pilot with one from Bachmann or scratch building.
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 2 жыл бұрын
That sort of thing seems more common with steam locomotives, since other than USRA designs, they were often unique to each railroad. I'm sure model makers have to think about how many of something they might sell, since NKP engines would mostly appeal to NKP modelers, and UP engines to UP modelers, etc. It works out cost wise for them to just make a USRA engine and then put a bunch of different paint jobs on it. I'm mostly a diesel era modeler, but I would love to see some more prototypical steam. Thanks for watching!
