NOTE: The Squealer itself is $80 and comes with the base unit, speaker and a sensor. An additional (optional) sensor is $20 dollars and the optional DCC to DC converter is another $10 dollars for a total of $110.
The Squealer is a motion detecting flange wheel squeal system by the good folks at ISE. You can order yours at Iowa Scaled Engineering: www.iascaled.com/store/ModelR...

Nice video. I am planning on getting one myself. This will be nice to have on my switching layout with 15” curves.

Good review, no room to add another speaker on the same board, that you could run some wires down the line with another 2 sensors and or even a third speaker to run the opposite direction? That would cover about a good size yard, or 3 bends? Shouldn't that be MFRX on your "patched" locomotive?

Did the sheet have dimensions for the sensor? I want to try it on my N scale. In fact I was going to buy one after we came back from lunch but they were sold out. If they fit easy enough I would like to have 4 or 5. I’m waiting for the wheels on diamond module. That’ll be cool too.

the hole you will need to drill is 3/8 inch. I think for N scale you'd need to remove a portion of one tie to clear enough space for the sensor to poke through.

In the video it sounded like the squeal cut out as the train was still rolling over the sensor. Even on the non iPhone microphone. Does it play consistently or stop like i was hearing, then start again.? My impression is that it should be constant on as long as there is motion over it.

There are a series of squeals in one sound file. The squealer will turn up and down the volume randomly as it senses movement essentially playing a random sound and a random moment.

I heard in an interview it was somewhere around 20. (don't quote me on that) But you wouldn't want that many hooked up to one squealer as the speaker needs to be placed near the "source" of the sound for best effect. Watching a train go around a curve but hearing a squeal somewhere way off to your right would not sound right. If you've got a large, curved yard though, I could see a bunch of sensors on one squealer could work in that situation.

@@MFRailroad thanks, I have a small switching layout, so at least 3 will do the job

Good job with the video presentation. I have to say the squeal sound wasn't appealing. It sounded more like the sound of bad car brakes. But I do appreciate your effort to share that. Tanks.

The sounds were professionally recorded on the prototype and edited by a professional audio engineer. If it sounded like bad car brakes to you, that's what flange squeal sounds like!
