Mombasa grass (Panicum maximum) is a perennial fodder of Africa and it has been recently introduced as a new fodder crop in Pakistan. Its name MOMBASA is followed by the capital city name of African country Kenya. It is rich in proteins (13%) and cherished fodder for domestic animals. It may attain the height of 7-8 feet, its growth rate is so fast that it can produce7-8 cuttings and 3-4 thousand maunds of green fodder within a year. However, its growth is reduced and seeds are produced in winter season.
We have not only introduced its available production technology but the results of the recent research conducted on weed control and plant spacing of this new crop have also been shared in this video. Major features of its production technology include the planting its nursery from 1-1.5 kg seed during February and March, transplanting of 6 in high plants after 35-50 days of sowing, transplanting at a distance of 1-2 feet either on flat soil or on the top of 2.5 feet apart ridges, spray of atrazine 38 EC @ 500 ml/acre 2 weeks for the control of dicotyledonous weeds and and of Orcus -Evyol group (halosulfuron ethyl) 3 weeks after transplanting. No disease and insect has so for been reported on this newly introduced fodder crop.
It may prove to be a blessing for the cattle and buffalo farmers. Owing to its milk producing properties, It is known as MAKHAN GHAS (butter grass) in India. This fodder is so delicious and preferred by cattle that it may replace maize, sorghum, millet and sorghum Sudan grass hybrid fodder during the coming years.
