Interesting lecture, stumbled onto this series looking for some current Biophysics questions to mull over. Doctor Bialek has provided a daunting starting point and I will be looking into his published material. Thanks for sharing

It seems to me that if the bat's "probe" signal was correlated with the background noise, which is rich with signals in a wide spectrum, then you could distinguish small phase shifts with respect to the background simply by observing differences in the ordering of certain events (such as maximal amplitude) in the signal returned to each ear.

With the flies embryo, I wonder how much local environment plays a role in the success of the earliest stages to full embryo development; a bunch of different conditions of surrounding environment would be interesting. Also does each cell read every single codon of DNA? Does each cell get a highlighted section of DNA that references their part in the play so to speak? When the earliest cells multiply, and then as all the cells multiply, in that exact moment is it time based (similar to environment dependance) that sets in motion exactly when the cell will go through its movements?
