I've played for over 33yrs now and never been graded. I sent some of the music I play to a flute teacher and she said its a good 6+. So now I've decided to do the gradings and hopefully get to 8. Ive worked my way through the pieces and scales for grades 1-3 in 4 days but haven't booked in any exams. I'll look at it after covid but until then I'll keep practicing. In my 50's and never too old to learn. Good luck everyone

Remember passing grade 8, 18 yrs ago. Annoying was remembering all the scales: Major, Minor (Harmonic/Melodic), Chromatics and dimished-7s...oh and don't forget the apeggios!!! 🤯🤯🤯 I just play what I want now, having purchased a dedicated flute microphone 2 years ago.

I'm currently playing the poulenc sonata, first and second movement and Syrinx. Reckon I'd be somewhere between grade 6 and 7 🙈 But it was super interesting to see these grades being played on the flute as twoset has recently made such a video for violin!

Poulenc Sonata Mvt 2 is Grade 7. Poulenc Sonata Mvt 1 and 3 are Grade 8. If you play all 3 together, they become a piece for Diploma ABRSM.

When I was doing grades, 2nd mvt poulenc was 7, 3rd mvt was 8, all was diploma, syrinx I did for my grade 8 trinity but was on diploma for ABRSM at the time so ????

i've been playing for 6 years now, and in AMEB (australian music examination board) exams, i am currently working in grade 7, but i think in ABRSM i'm about a grade 8 level. i've worked really hard over the past few years, so i'm quite happy with my progress!

Sight reading, I was fine through 5, 6 was mostly fine, 7 was too tough for me without practicing the pieces and even with practice would still probably be over my head.. I still struggle getting a nice clean sound on 3rd octave E. My flute is in-line, no split-E mechanism. And I need more speed.

Dang you should get the thing you put on the end of the g key so it’s as if it’s offset. Same tho with the split e, I borrowed an old flute of my teachers to try it out before buying and the split e made SUCH A DIFFERENCE like I really want it now 😂

High E naturals suck i hate them. But what helped me was cracking an a natural note higher which produces E natural.

I reached grade 6+.. then much later on contracted mild but annoying arthritis in my right wrist and left thumb.. I stopped playing as I was frustrated at not being able to have the flexibility anymore.. picked the flute after 4 years, and found that my sound wasn’t too bad but my mental agility of sight reading was disastrous.. but following your 1 - 8 suddenly things began to click… I am now 71.. back to grade 2+ .. ah well.. I choose slower passages now and serenade

You did awesome! 😊 I tried playing along with you, but you started playing each piece while I was still looking at the key signatures, so I had to catch up to you a lot. 😊 I've never played any exams like this one. I'm not sure these exams were around when I played in high school and college. (I graduated from college in 1993. I'm old. 😭 ) If these exams were around back then, my instructors never mentioned them. :/ Thank you very much for introducing me to these tests. I learn so much from you, Amelie. And I look forward to you playing either of the other two exams! 😊

Thanks a million. This video is like an identity photo of the concert flute and all it can do. I play recorder and currently I'm sort of teetering on the edge of the pool with the transverse flute - a couple months ago I saw this concert flute in a flea market, out in the rain, and couldn't bear the sight so I forked out 90€. But when I took it to the shop the guy told me it needed a complete overhaul - 490 € - which was more than the poor thing was worth new, being a cheap effort in nickel silver :-( A few days ago I got a plastic Yamaha fife, which I am beginning to get the hang of (the videos on embouchure are a godsend). We'll see how it goes... Keep up the good work and keep safe!

Excellent job!! I never really understand why the classical music establishment nowadays is so adamant about not using period instruments though. I just think this modern flute sounds so much better for music written late romantic era and on, classical flutes for the classical era, and baroque flutes for the baroque era.

The grade 3 songs brought back nostalgic memories from 2019 when sat for my exam. I previously was going to sit for grade 5 this April. Sadly, COVID-19 put everything on hold.

Jus either do grd 5 in November or heck just start working on grade 6 now! Your teacher wouldn't have suggested you do you exam April if you weren't going to pass! So take thar as a "you're already grade 5 standard"!

I played for 5 years, stopped for 3 and now I’ve picked it up again. I got a distinction in my grade 5 exam, but I’d say I’m currently at a grade 3/4 level. I’m aiming to get my grade 8 in a couple years though!

I'm curious... For those in the know, what makes Grade 6 List B - Gaubert Madrigal Grade 6 standard? I'm putting in a disclaimer now to say that I'm not a flautist, but I did learn to play the recorder at school (I know they're totally different instruments) and I'm pretty sure I could sight-read this piece right off the bat. It's predominantly scalic in nature, with vast majority of the piece being diatonic with some legato phrasing and a few hairpins... just don't know how they classify it as Grade 6. In my humble opinion some of the Grade 4 pieces look considerably harder!

I played the Madrigal as part of my senior recital in college. Some of the higher level pieces were assigned for me as early as freshman year. I played the Madrigal as a dedication to my sister who had passed away unexpectedly a few months before the recital. While the Madrigal looks easy it requires some drastic changes in tone color throughout the piece. To me, the changes in tempo and color represented the chaotic emotions of celebrating the life of a loved one while processing the deep suffering of grief. The history behind the piece is intense. The notes and rhythms are relatively easy but there's more art than one might expect. The other pieces in my program were seemingly more impressive and much more technical but the Madrigal was by far my most expressive and artistic performance up to that point in my studies.

The short section played here, in my opinion, does not capture the essence of the piece. Nothing against the performance because she is obviously very talented. The start and end point just misses what the piece is written to communicate.

@@bwigiwigington4360 thanks for your comments. I suppose in an excerpt of a dozen or so bars you can't always judge all the finer details of a piece. I would also suggest that as she is more than likely sight-reading the pieces, she is unlikely to know the back stories and hence attach the necessary emotion to the performance with that in mind.

The Grade 1 Joplin piece is actually an easier version than the version you played - I did wonder how that could be Grade 1! Here's a performance of it - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZ12qrulr5O7Z2g.html. Also Cradle Song is in F, rather than Eb major.

All of the instruments have exams, ya can't study it further without the qualifications or if you do a particularly exceptional audition

ABRSM has exams for a lot of orchestral and solo instruments. Percussion, harpsichord, pipe organ, saxophone, and so on.

I needed to boost my confidence after today's disasterous practice. I am a proud grade 8 player for years (being a flautist for more than 20 years that it wouldn't look too good otherwise) ... mostly. And then there are the days when I fight with grade 3 pieces and can't hit the 3rd octave properly.

I would say Im at level 7 but could be also at level 8. For both I need to practice but I don’t really like doing only fast passages so I don’t really play pieces like in 8. Also you have an amazing tone. Im confident in my tone quality but its not quite yet like yours. Maybe in a few years I hope

I never played through grades and haven't heard of ABRSM before TwoSet so this is very interesting for me to see. Note-wise I could probably play 1-7 and maybe 8 if the piece fits, although my f3 and higher can sound bad, but I think what throws me out earlier is my rhythm. I do have a sense of rhythm but I barely count and barely play to a metronome (I'm trying to change that) so everything unusual would catch me off guard and I'd be completely confused. I'd have to go with my gut and it's not always right so yeah, I'd probably fail. Soo I guess I am at grade 5 or 6 in my 5th year of playing

You have to prepare.

In the exams there's a section for 3 pieces you've prepared, a section for scales (the examiner will ask you to play various scales/arpeggios with various articulation depending on the grade), a sightreading section, and a listening section. But all of these pieces shown here are things that would be in the prepared pieces section! And for the sightreading you generally have about 3-5 minutes to 'practice'/get a feel for things before showing it to the examiner. They're not looking for perfection, just to see how you do with something you've not seen before and see how you approach it! I took gradees 1-8 and the first level of diploma on flute, grades 1-6 on piano and 1-5 singing so I've done a LOT of these exams lol - hope this is helpful!

Diploma levels next ;P cool to see this up next to the system I used - AMEB (Australian). I played the Fauré for Grade 8 I think, and Poulenc I never studied formally but LOVE to play it. I think the whole sonata is diploma level. I did Trinity for my LTCL and played Reinecke, Nielsen and Borne's Carmen Fantasy from memory. It was a while ago now haha

Me: man i cant play past level 2. Also me: has been playing flute for aproximately 2 and 1/2 weeks Flute has seemed to come pretty easily to me, tone and ridiculously high note-wise, but articulation and remembering fingerings + sight reading is another story lol

Hi Amelie, have you ever tried the Rubank's method for flute book? And if you have, how would you compare it to the ABRSM? Like for example, what is the ABRSM equivalent if you finish the elementary method book? As I am not looking into official gradings yet, it would be nice to have a rough idea on where I am at. Thanks alot!

After finishing the elementary method, I know Rubank has an advanced method or you can try the Cavally Etude book 1 ( there are 4 books in the whole set )

If I had a teacher I'd be Grade 6 now - saying that if I had a teacher from 2010 (my teacher moved away and I couldn't find another) I'd more than likely be practising for a Diploma but hey, my flute lessons have always been a bit hit and miss since my music teacher, in school [back in the 80s] left to take a position in another school! I'd be Grade 6 singing if it wasn't for the lock down, I don't think I'm destined to play any instruments/sing lol!

Its weird that even the first song for grade 1 they have a double grace note to play. I would see this being extremely challenging for a 7 year old to play due to the speed in fine motor skills it takes. Usually kids around that age are still developing their fine motor skills and would struggle to keep up. Who knows, maybe with practice that could change.
