In this Professional Genealogist Reacts I watch "John Berman Solves Family Mystery in Amsterdam" from the CNN - Roots: Our Journey Home series. In this video John Berman explores his Dutch Sephardi ancestry through his Spinoza family line, which is actually a shared ancestry I have with John Berman. This family had immigrated from Salé, Morrocco to Amsterdam, joining the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam.

One time, on a lark, I typed in various ancestors from 1800s and earlier into KZfaq search. I found one of them is considered to be ‘haunting’ a cemetery. 😂 A few paranormal investigations have taken place there. I don’t know if great grandpa Pearris is really a ghost, but if he is, I hope he scares ‘em good. 🤣

It's amazing to see how many primary sources are available for this community. That's the dream for me. My family is from East Tennessee and North Carolina and the paper trail is Sparse.

Great video Jarrett, keep up the good work! Half of the world seems to be your family 👍 I found some more sad info about this Daniel and "mamzer" Isaac Espinoza. Isaac was born to Sara de Leao when she was still officially married to Daniel Jessurun Lobo, but the civil record says Daniel Espinoza is the father (no mentioning of illegitimacy). Daniel Espinoza married Sara in 1835 after her husband had died in 1833, but not religiously. Their children were mamzers and were likely not allowed to marry in the synagogue. Daniel Espinoza married a second time to Betje Miljado in 1844 and this was an official and religious marriage. Their children married in the synagogue. So this is a very sad story for Isaac and his son Benjamin, who seemed to have been outcasts of the community, not because they did something wrong, but because of their father Daniel. While the kids of Daniels second marriage had full rights. I wonder how this Daniel felt about himself. And it certainly explains why Benjamin left for the US.

Very interesting...if that is true then it is likely you can find on them back in Amsterdam. Based on the name , which isn't always an accurate way to figure it out, I would guess Salomon came from the Ashkenazi community. While a bit harder to research due to use of Patronymics over Surnames until the 1800s, it is still a good chance of finding something.

I came to a Dutch train station. I heard an announcement that the train onwards was cancelled and to go take the bus. I don't know Dutch. I do know a bit of German. I understood the announcement enough so I was the first one on the bus. People chatting is quite another matter. I probably wouldn't understand enough of that.

Is Espinoza/Espinosa/Spinoza etc a Jewish name or is it common Spanish/Iberian one? There is a Chilean-Swedish film director called Daniel Espinosa. Edit: Wikipedia says "Espinosa is a Spanish and Portuguese surname."

That was a great one! Could really see your excitement lol. Could you maybe do an episode on finding other Sephardic sources? I'm looking for a particular one where the family Naar took the alias Rodriguez but cant find it online.. :(

When it comes to researching Sephardi families it becomes more about researching the area they lived and seeing what documents are available. I may do more on other resources related to Sephardi families, especially something on the community in Livorno.

How much of a boon are Spanish naming customs to a genealogist? I'm trying to follow my Filipino family, and, more than a few times, the fact that Filipinos generally include their mother's maiden name as one of their 'middle' names, and often have a second middle name from one or both grandparents is the only path I can follow. Until recently, it's also been traditional, at least in my family to take the other grandparent's name as your confirmation name if it's not already part of your name.

FYI… mamzer doesn’t mean illegitimate. A mamzer is a child who was born to a married woman whose father isn’t the woman’s husband. This is a very serious thing. The child of a mamzer will be a mamzer. A mamzer can only marry another mamzer or a ger. There’s more details…you might want to read up on Halacha for more information than I’m able and feel comfortable writing here.

This is so interesting! I was told by a Spaniard man that most of Spain’s populace is of Jewish and Arabic ancestry. That includes me and I am proud of both!👍🏻 Just wondering if you have contacted John Berman and tell him about your blog? I love his work on ABC and CNN.

That's not true. He was probably mixing the idea of cultural interactions with people mixing with each other. There are a couple of genetic studies that disprove what you were told, that's why I'm letting you know.

Spinoza pissed off TWO religions! He was excommunicated from both the Jewish AND the Christian religions through his views on God!
