Almost more impressive than his incredible playing (Mary could play too) is what they were doing with the recording process, whether it be multi-tracking harmonies and guitar parts or changing the pitch and/or speed of the guitar overdubs. Truly a legend.

What has always blown me away is the sound quality of thes videos of Les and Mary from the early 1950's. They were both so incredible.

Les and Mary were way ahead of their time. I remember as a kid in the late 40s and early 50s when their songs would play on a juke box or a car radio. Everyone would stop what they were doing and gather around and listen. Unreal.

So much of today's playing & recording owes a debt to the pioneer inventions & techniques developed by Les Paul.

That was from their appearance on Omnibus. They show how they do their sound on sound over dubbing to record their songs. Watch the whole video. Also listen to their song Cimarron.

It's awesome that you posted this video. Les Paul was the OG guitar hero/ shredder. So far ahead of the curve it was ridiculous. I'm writing this as I'm watching the video and you seem to be saying everything I've typed just after I've typed it. 😅 Great job. I just found your channel. New sub for sure.

Technically it's a film (telecine) of their TV appearances but since it WAS originally broadcast on TV I guess it applies. Also pretty sure none of it is live, Les is basically using the tape machines as props. Having said that, Les was brilliant. All this was done by bouncing between 2 tape machines. There were no multitrack machines in 51. Even 2 track machines didn't exist until 53. And lastly... check out the chihuahua. :)

Blew my mind how rockin' this song was from 1951! I mean, it's no ZZTop 😆 but 1951 was like Perry Como and Peggy lee (all awesome in their own field). Imagine if this was the song that brought r&r to the mainstream instead of Bill Haley. Did you know you can press a number on the keyboard's right keypad and it'll take you to certain parts of the video?
