This video is a re-upload from Saturday, see bottom of description for details.
Big thanks to NIP Embedded Systems for sending in this unit, there was a lot of stuff to learn about it that I couldn't fit into a single video. The more I tinker with it, the more stuff I find that I can do with it, and the better my understanding gets.
After shooting this review I had a MacBook Pro in with a suspected failed battery - the battery is glued in, so it's not a trivial matter to swap it out for test. Plug in the Battery Analyzer, and bam, now I can check it in-situ before I go to the hassle of removing it.

I posted this on Saturday, but de-listed it after receiving an alarming phone call about the device.
However, after taking the concerns into consideration, I concluded that one bad experience doesn't make this a bad product. The issues that I'd been told about have been resolved in the latest hardware revision featured in the video, and I'm satisfied that there's no cause for concern.

Man you're really inspiring. Truth is, there is almost no shop that repairs stuff in my city because we kind of throw things and buy new ones given the high cost of labour but if I had your skills and knowledge I think I'd go all in to make a small computer repair shop. The idea sounds daunting. I hate when I can't fix something and I know it's gonna happen all the time. Thanks for sharing your stuff on KZfaq. Wish you all the best.

UPDATE: Now NLBA comes with 10 FREE Days for Reset/Unlock/Repair option. Easy to recover the investment. For existing customers, 10 FREE Days for Reset Option can be offered upon request. Another great review. You explained very well the features of this device. I would like to add some more info to avoid any confusions: If the battery is in Lock state it cannot be "Revived". If a battery has bad cells then nothing in the world can "repair" the battery. Steps to repair a battery: 1. Detect the defect (in many cases it is due to over discharged cells) -> NLBA can do it 2. Fix the defect by replacing the cells or bring all cells to the same voltage. 3. Reset/Reprogram the chip to clear the errors (NLBA for the moment supports BQ8030 chip reset and I will add more chips soon). This step is very difficult because all chips are secured. Latest chips have even SHA256 bit. 4. Analyze the cells voltages by measuring the internal resistance and tracking the voltage under load -> NLBA can do it.

I don’t think this product is useful “to us” in its current form. But due to its low cost, I bought one anyway, in hopes it’s future development will yield better capabilities “for us”. I think this device would sell like crazy, if it could write to internal controllers. Replacing cells and unlocking the chip, would be a HUGE game changer. Without that, it’s just a glorified reporting machine IMHO. I’m with Graham, if a battery is bad with a locked chip, why bother. Nothing this device can do. It’s cheaper and less of a headache to just buy new $20-$30 batteries.

There are 2-3 softwares (just software) in the world that could reset/reprogram the chip. They cost up to $1000 per year. Most of the chips are very well secured, that's why the price is high. I will add more chips soon for affordable prices.

In playbook days when you discharged it Right down and it refused to charge even leaving it plugged in overnight a trick called stack charging got the battery up to the minimum enough to charge !basically you plugged in the charger and then immediately out a score or so of times if nothing, you repeated it. It works by putting in a tiny amount of charge at a time until the control board wakes up and charges normally. Never chuck dead battery packs out its generally a dead cell the rest maybe fine ,i power all my torches with old laptop batteries you just have to use a small pcb charge circuit (from ebay) to safely charge them as the batteries themselves do not have built in protection circuits or a decent charger with overheat protection as bad ones heat up fast!

None of this can be done with AIDA.

Hi to everyone! I would like to thank the person who design and develop this NLBA device. There is a loot of good batteries out there those manufacturers are locking just to make people spend money! Let us be honest if any of us peasants would do such thing we would go to jail! This Analyser have helped me sort through my battery stock. Many of them turn out to be in great shape. I had completely unresponsive batteries that I was able to awake, charge, grade and I learned that battery that was made in 2008 have 89% life in it and the cells are great having only 22 ohms of resistance…. CRAZY. I think this is so far the best device I bought this year a specially that it was not too expensive. This will be handy every day in my line of business as I resell laptop parts! Thank you! I have no problem recommending that to other people who have knowledge and a bit of common sense…. This will not repair any bad cells as this is impossible - bad cell needs to be replaced but it will do miracles when it comes to good cells that was blocked by so called protection! Anyone who deals with laptops or other electronics that use this type of battery should have this on hand! Period! I only hope that it will be constantly developed, that owner will take on board users suggestions as I bet there will be many and that we can save at least 50% of them batteries going to waist and destroying our planet! Once again Thank YOU!

This is a comprehensive device. I love what it can apparently do. It should be noted that the hardware and basic, but nice looking, software simply test and diagnose batteries. To reset the safety features of overly discharged batteries, for possible recovery, one must subscribe to their error clearing software to the tune of $200- a year..... The one thing that was not brought up in this video is the perspective of battery building and repairs. The controller in the battery is pre-programmed at the factory, and it follows the life of the original cells. However, when you go into the battery and replace a cell, the controller must be re-programmed. Even worse, if you do a total rebuild of a battery for, example a laptop where the battery is no longer available, a full re-programming of controller for the newly replaced cells is necessary. Some people think that, for example cell two is bad, I can just go in there with a spot welder and replace the battery, and the controller will automatically recognize it. No, it won't, and you need a tool like the NLBA1 to perform a full re-programming of the controller. So yes, this might not be as valuable in a PC repair shop, as most repairs are just part swaps. But if your business is building custom batteries, or re-building batteries for older laptops, then this is a killer tool to have.

My macbook air (late 2010) had no charge (charger broken and didn't need the laptop) and sat without charge in it for around 9 months (i think, or longer). To my surprise it did charge up all on it's own (incredibly slowly at first... macos said 0% for about an hour..). The large internal resistance probably explains why i've got an old laptop, and under heavy CPU load at below 80% battery, it'll just cut out.. it's an old cheap replacement.. likely voltage droops under heavy load below minimum cutoff.
@nipembedded9976
@nipembedded9976 3 жыл бұрын
This is usually happening when the FCC (Full Charge Capacity) parameter does not reflect the current state of the cells. You kept the battery 9 months, the state of the cells decreased due to their chemistry behaviour in time but the microcontroller has the old information about the cells state. One option would be to charge the battery 100% in the laptop then discharge it to 0% then back to 100% in order to update the FCC. Some batteries firmware does not allow a difference in calibration cycle more than 10% of the original FCC.

This is indeed a very nice device and I've seen it before and I really like it, though I can't see too many uses for it if you think about it - the average service centers will not bother with "consumables". They'll just toss the battery and get a new one - no need working out if it's dead or not :)) The only reason to get is to get serious use out of it and that would only happen if your shop specializes in batteries or enforces some sort of rule about giving out a full report on ever battery in the products that come in. If it can't yet hack into the controller chips to reset them and make refurbishing batteries possible, it wouldn't see much use. Even after the fact, a replacement battery would probably outweigh the time/effort needed to replace cells and stuff...
@nipembedded9976
@nipembedded9976 3 жыл бұрын
Several use cases: - checking a lot of batteries if they are good or not, is the battery charging/discharging then use it or list it on eBay - reviving those overstocked batteries that are not detected by the laptop but still not in LOCK state - for a laptop which is not charging the battery you will know if the battery is faulty or the motherboard - calibrate the battery to report the correct SoC to windows - you want to transport used laptop batteries by plan then you can use Test Report which is according to the IATA standard - you want to recycle many batteries by extracting the good cells but you don't know how good they are, by checking the cells voltages you know if the battery worths to be unpacked or not. Unpacking a battery is not so simple - for those who resell non-OEM batteries, such a tool can measure the real capacity and compare with what is written on the label - an probably most important use case: to Reset battery chips or copy the image from a good battery to a bad one. Now it supports BQ8030 but I already have the solution to Reset/Reprogram all BQ20ZXXX, BQ20XXX, BQ3042X, R2J240. It's a matter of time to implement it in the software. There are discussions with a team from Ukraine to implement resetting 99% chips on the market through NLBA. How would be to reset DJI and Apple batteries?

When the battery is drained, the button cell drains it to below 0%. For Asus, this minimum is 3.33 V for all pairs of cells. The draining lasts for 3 days. For Acer, this process lasts for 3 weeks. That's important for the battery maintanance, but only professionals do this. When the battery is in perfect shape, the laptop reaches its maximum even if it is Ac online with the battery is removed. A bad battery inserted can disable the performance gained by the new battery.

Thanks for the video Graham (must have missed it first time around). I would get one cos it's cool even though I don't have a repair business. Usually on car batteries you connect positive first then negative and reverse when disconnecting. Don't know if this applies laptop batteries though.

If you plan to reset the chip please note that NLBA for the moment supports only BQ8030 from Sanyo. So, for this chip you can set FCC parameter and you don't need to calibrate the battery. FCC is Full Charge Capacity which can be edited for this chip.

Dell D600 battery (C1295) With a jumper between Ground and the SYS PRESENT pin I can measure voltage and discharge the battery using a R/C charger /discharger. However I can not charge at the out most pins. No current flow goes into the battery. If I put the battery back in the laptop it will charge it full again. Would you know if I need another jumper to allow the battery to accept charging?

Does the chip inside the laptop battery handle cell balancing? On rc lipo batteries you have a separate balance lead in addition to the power leads that connects on to the smart charger. I wouldnt force charge a battery and leave it unattended otherwise you could come back to a fire
@nipembedded9976
@nipembedded9976 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the chip inside the battery is responsible for balancing, monitoring the temperature, tracking the capacity and many many other things. Most batteries have an internal let's say "programmable fuse" which could be burned by the chip in case a failure is detected, so no input/output current.

What a great instrument and software? I'd never heard of it. Can we recharge a battery (i mean when the voltage has got too low that it couldn't be charged by itself) with a power supply only using positive and negative pins? Thank you very much
@nipembedded9976
@nipembedded9976 3 жыл бұрын
There are some batteries that can take some current but most of them not. For example Dell uses a special command to activate the charging MOSfet, same for discharging. The charging procedure is complex and must be done according to the smart battery charger standard. For example you must read the temperature sensor, you need to charge the battery with Pre Charge current first then to switch to constant current and after that to Constant Voltage. Also some alarms must be monitored. Anytime a failure is detected you must disconnect the power. Using all these information you could charge a battery let's say to about 80-90% but from 90% to 100% it is more difficult because some batteries require Pulse Charging like PWM other require some sleep periods and so on. It is different from brand to brand.

It's ideal for checking for bad cells which might be replaceable? I have a Toshiba netbook which I bought for light use before tablets became very popular and less expensive, after 5-6yrs of non use I fired it up and the battery was dead! I took a punt and started to remove and install the battery hoping it would jolt it into starting, after about 15-20min it finally woke up, I initially thought the battery wouldn't be any good but after 3-4 charges its like new with about 10% wear on it! Now all I've got to do is replace the battery on my Samsung note! 😂
