After a lot of time, I finally hear this song! This is some intense power metal with curious but powerful vocals, the main riff is catchy so is the chorus, the bridge brought interesting solos and an amazing long high note, pretty cool song!

Vocalist, Asami, was originally an R&B singer. So, when I was invited to be a vocalist for LOVEBITES, I asked the members if she should change her singing style to something more like metal. And then they said, you don't have to change it because the way they sing is more unique. By the way, Asami used to take classical ballet lessons between the ages of 2 and 14, so when she sings, her unique movements become natural.

They were formed from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief metalhead and soul of the band) recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" pocket nuke), and they went and found the two guitarists, Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands, and the whole group found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time. Miho and Miyako compose most of their music. They have only been around for about 4 years. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Slayer etc. and they pretty much aced it all. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and now they’re taking it to another level. This was a medium-intensity song for them. They do everything from soulful power ballads to white-hot insane thrash, and almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. One key to their sound is that the two shredders are so different in style and tone. Midori is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel. Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The interplay makes their duets really rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. (As another reactor said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band.") You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Welcome to the Wolf-Pit!

It's no coincidence that parts of this remind you of Angra! Although the band cites Helloween as their primary influence, guitarist Midori (the one not playing the Dean) cites Angra as one of her personal favorite bands and influences. Other major influences include Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica. Vocalist Asami actually comes from an R&B background, with influences like Alicia Keys.

Those are really cool influences! Being so different between them can bring an interesting sound. (I love Angra! Is a shame that Kiko is not playing with them anymore, but I think he is living a dream playing with Megadeth, also is a shame that Edu damaged a little bit his voice over the years)

One thing about Japanese bands, they are not bound by genre definitions. Asami came from a R&B background and I like the feeling she brings to their songs. Don't pick your favorite until you have heard more than 1 song. What surprises people is variety of the songs Lovebites compose. It's not just one style powermetal and this song does not give justice to Asamis vocals. For that you need to listen "edge of the world". They do everything all the way from ballads, hard rock and thrash metal. Shadowmaker only shows one fractions of their arsenal. btw. also the "weird" sound tone in the beginning of the song... it was played correctly, even though I also find it interesting choice, as if they meant it to sound a bit "off" in the end of the intro. Like "twisted notes" if you catch my meaning. I have composed over 100 songs myself and I know they are great composers in Lovebites, which makes me think it was intended that way.

I always thought comparing Lovebites and BM was Apples and Oranges. Both very talented but different styles of music. Even when BM crosses into metal it sounds nothing like Lovebites metal and vice versa. I think it is simply a matter of personal preference. One can prefer the style and sound of one band and still admire the pure talent of the other. Seems like he is curious enough about Lovebites that he will react to them again at some point.

LOVEBITES - Shadowmaker lyrics: Caught in the noise, my thoughts are destroyed Trapped in the silence, it's so hard to breathe But still I go on, my hunger is strong Hoping that someone will grab my hand Stranded by moonlight I realize the cold of this world Maybe it's too late? No one can save me From all of the darkness and solitude Cry, like shadows of the night I carry all the pain inside to justify why I'm alive Despite going through this hell Cause still my heart has hope No matter if I'm torn apart, I'll play my part Before I drown with secret thoughts of my heart Reckless and fast, how long will I last? Dancing like puppets, I'm empty inside Fighting the fear, and grieving the dear Hoping that someday I'll be repaid Only my echoing heartbeats can prove that I'm here Am I all alone? Even a faint light is too bright for me, I can't see a thing Hide, in shadows I reside I tremble like a heartless soul, no place to go In desolated land knowing no escape But still I wish to live Just waiting for a somebody to notice me Before I fall down to depths of the abyss Caught in the noise, my thoughts are destroyed Trapped in the silence, it's so hard to breathe But still I go on, my hunger is strong Hoping that someone will grab my hand Stranded by moonlight I realize the cold of this world Maybe it's too late? No one can save me from solitude Cry, like shadows of the night I tremble like a heartless soul, no place to go In desolated land knowing no escape But still I wish to live Just waiting for a somebody to notice me Before I fall down to depths of the abyss Like shadows of the night I carry all the pain inside to justify why I'm alive Despite going through this hell Cause still my heart has hope No matter if I'm torn apart, I'll play my part Before I drown with secret thoughts of my heart

It´s not unusual to hear women in metal, outside Japan. In Japan there´s not an strange thing from years ago. One of the most famous bands can be Aldious, from 2008 to present day (still active but with some changes along the years), also there´s a lot more of all-female bands in Japan. In metal i can remember now bands like Mary´s Blood, Bridear, Trident, Destrose (drummer and bass in Lovebites comes from this band) and some more. Recently another one: Nemophila (really good ones). Also mixed bands where the girls, are not only the voice like Unlucky Morpheus And a lot more. In rock you hace all female bands like Stereopony (not active now), Band Maid, Scandal... Education in Japan teach music to kids from kinder, even it´s normal to learn to play an instrument in high school as part of the curriculum. Also have very good music schools (aside conservatory) to teach young people how to play and also music theory and composition. Japan have a very powerful music industry apart from the "canned J-Pop" with a lot of members. The real difference with Lovebites is that they sing in english almost all of their songs. Asami (the singer) lives for some years in EEUU and can speaks very well. Rest of the members... well they can "speak some" at least. Oh, a little hint for Lovebites fans. It´s possible to buy their records and even concert (in DVD and BD) outside Japan. You only need to sign an account in amazon.co.jp They do international shipping in a lot of items and their DVD and BD are not blocked by region. Of course you must pay the international parcel but the shipments are very fast.

@@Temporal72 Japanese bands usually don´t made an style "by the book", they like to change and experiment with other things, also the solid musical formation of a lot of bands make this possible As an example, Yoshiki Hayashi, the founder and composer of their legendary band X-Japan even compose a symphony and adapt a lot of the themes of his band (also metal) to perform them with an orchestra If you´re interested in Japanese metal, must check on X-Japan. They are the "mother and father" of a lot of their modern music. From Babymetal to anything you can imagine. As a fact, Babymetal do a lot of references to this band

This is just the beginning of Lovebites epic-ness. If you do listen to 4-5 more songs, you'll most likely come to the same conclusion as many have: They are the best. You want changes like Band-Maid, you haven't even scratched the surface. This song is more as a "promotional" song, like When Destinies Align and Rising to which they did MV's. They are way better than Band-Maid in mixing things, riffs, transitions, solos. They do power metal, trash metal, operatic and melodic metal, hard rock, ballads ( epic ballad - Epilogue, Empty Daydream, Swan Song). They are all multi-instrumentalist, where the Dean player plays keyboards and guitar simultaneously or goes from classical piano to guitar and back and forth or when they do dual guitar overhand tapping in perfect sync (Signs of Deliverance). The guitars did sound slightly different than their studio version or other live versions. They also have an epic opener in Thunder Vengeance. Now, I love Band-Maid, they are amazing band, my third best band anywhere right now. There are many Japanese all female bands - Nemophila, Scandal, Aldious, Ghacaric Spin, Mary's Blood with at least 30-ish of them active this year. Then the mixed ones like Unlucky Morpheus, Asterism, Wagakki Band, BabyMetal and so on. Enjoy, whether it is a reaction or not! :)

@@Temporal72 that's kind of difficult because prog is just as varied as regular rock. I would suggest checking it THE MAGICIAN'S BIRTHDAY, SEVEN STARS, FOOTPINTS ON THE SNOW,others. Spock's Beard has a bunch of newer stuff but even they have been around a long time. There was a duo called Magellan made up of two brothers who did some great stuff, but they both passed away. Try FRIENDS OF AMERICA off their first album. Porcupine Tree ended a few years ago but they had terrific albums. Echolyn is a group that's still around. Dream Theater (which most proggers love but I have a hard time getting into) DT offshoot I like is LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT,. They have a brand new video out, which I can't remember the name of, of course. It's pretty amazing. I have their other two albums and will definitely get the third. There's a group called Shadow Gallery that I've lost track of. Two smaller labels if you're interested: LAZER'S EDGE and MAGNA CARTA. They both carry interesting stuff. There's also BURNING SHED in England that carries older stuff and albums that we usually can't in the states until later after release. There's also GONZO. Sorry of you already know all this stuff.

The vocalist Asami is a little bit out of pitch ( flat) in this particular record, the grade is not critical, but already causes the effect that her voice is not supported by the instruments and sounds "not as powerful as it could be". The official old MV Shadowmaker has the voice on pitch and sounds a way better in that sense. You can compare if you want.

I will hear that MV, the thing is that when Hiu recommended this song on the comments he wanted me to hear this love version, but I will check the studio version :)

Female voices in power metal eh? Try Aldious. Eversince live would be a good place to start as it's their latest video.

Yeah, in terms of pure skills, there's no doubt these ladies are killers. The duel guitar shredders are insane; I compare them to Dragon Force. And that vocalist OMG she can reach crazy high notes like nothing. However, music isn't a sport. I prefer Band-Maid musically.

In the serie, "metal/vocal/professionnal/jazz - teacher/guitarist/vocalist/engineer" (forgot some), there goes another one ! Don't be sorry about Asami's voice, no one really cares what you think, like all the so-called "analysts" mentioned above.

Butthurt much? He voiced his opinion, but it seems we live in a world were any kind of "wrong" opinion is disliked and hated upon. I bet you want to live in north korea were only one kind of thinking and voting is allowed.

I have a problem too with the singer. It's not her tone or the power of her voice, it's just the way she sings. She doesn't articulate the words very much and sings in a monotonous way for me. You're right to compare Asami to Brittney Slayes and Unleash The Archers. Brittney has not only a powerful voice (so has Asami) but she is actually articulating very well, you can hear all syllabes clearly and she knows where to put power on those syllabes. "Shadowmaker has great lyrics but, without subtitles, all I hear is almost just "bla bla bla". But I'm really trying to love LOVEBITES guys, they are growing on me. I love the musicians (especially Miyako) and if they play a live show in Europe, I will definitely going to see them. 😀

To be fair English is not their main language, but Asami and Midori can speak English pretty good in several interviews. Sometimes I always think that Asami can easily sing for bands like scandal, band maid, shows-ya, etc. Not sure you've heard this, check this link for another side of Asami. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qryDmtyJtczTYas.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLOFrJOh3brTmGg.html
