This is me reacting to Chinese 9-Man Volleyball! This is the final of the 2018 NACIVT between Connex A and Smash. This looks like so much fun to play! I hope you enjoy and don't forget to like, comment, and ask questions if you have them! Yay volleyball!

There's actually a few more rules to note. Serving - 1 foot has to remain on the floor if the ball touches the net, you can have an extra touch (4 touches) ball can only be played between the elbow to the hands. anywhere else is consider "bodied" and cannot be played
@AndeeChung
@AndeeChung 2 жыл бұрын
another serving rule is that if the serve hits the white tape and goes in, its consider a re-serve and if it goes out, its consider fault.

There is no front row or back row. If you notice Connex plays 5 in the front 3 back and 1 called the suicide position. They back grab all the tips, dunks, rolls and random balls that goes behind the block.
@Poopiehead671
@Poopiehead671 2 жыл бұрын
The "dunk" play is called a hook. The hitter basically grabs and chucks the ball wherever he can in a singular motion. A good example of this is if the player grabs the ball from behind or under his shoulders, he'd have to do it in a swinging motion and that would be considered a lift Also a key thing to note, if the ball is in the neutral plane and 2 opposing players get to the ball and they "joust", that will be a replay

Just a heads up, if the ball touches the net the team gets an extra touch. Thats why all those rallies with 4 touches are actually legal

Any player can set, any player can hit but only 3 designated servers (not necessarily limited to the 3 backrow players). "Chai ball" is an open-hand pass that can be over the head, from the side or an underhand scoop as long as it's moving in one fluid motion.
@bchangg
@bchangg 2 жыл бұрын
There's no "backrow" attack! It's legal for any player to attack regardless of where they are on the court. Also, a ball touching the net counts as a "minus one" touch - which is why some of the plays you may have seen 4 touches total. In 9-man, there is no rotation; everybody stays in their specialized position throughout the game for as long as they like.

Definitley a lot of different rules to learn but the mechanics of traditional 6s are there. A lot of us do play 6s in our "offseason" and it helps to translate to the 9man court in the summertime. Would love to see the Shoji brothers out there sometime!

you can also lift the ball where indoors u can't (even on the dig), also want to add from AndeeChung's post, the 4th touch is basically if the pass is too low for the setter to set it, the setter can use both hands, grab the ball and pushes into the net, then set after the ball bounce back from the net. At least that's when I played it in the pass tournaments. Forgot to mention the net is lower as well, if I remember correctly, it's only 2m35

Erik come to the east coast some time and play! The only rotation is 3 players for serving. Typically it is the back 3, but if you have a guy that can rip a hard one and he is a net guy, he has a long way to get into position. I haven't played in a long time, but I think they still do "let" serves that if a ball hits the net during a serve and falls over to the opponent's side, then you can reserve the ball. I used to play "suicide" (if you can think of the telephone key pad it is the dead center spot) and the 4 and 6 spots are actually your outside hitters. Double quicks are more common for a 6-3 team, but you normally have a setter and your "tandem" hitter either doing inside/outside Xs. If the setter had a touch on the block, the suicide spot is the next back up to make the set. The game is so fast in comparison to traditional 6. Your eyes just have to keep up with the ball. Your blockers need to call touch so that your back row guys know to pick up and make the next ball high enough to make a swing out of it. It was definitely a change to learn how to dig up the "fast" (those dunk balls.. the motion has to be in one fluid motion.. you can't change the arm motion to do a fake to or something). It can be blocked, usually as a soft block.. I haven't seen too many jousts from them, but eventually someone will push too hard and get called for piking/penetrating over the net.

No ten foot line meaning that technically, you can have a 9man block on the net. I mean why would you want to do that? LOL. But yes, the 10ft line would eliminate a lot of necessary plays made by the back row.

You need to understand the origins of this 9-man tournament. Because of the Chinese Exclusion Act, there were very few Chinese women and families in the US in the early 1900's. Labor Day was one of the only long weekends for laborers, laundrymen, & restaurant workers. Chinese men from Boston & Providence got together on Labor Day to play this game they learned from missionaries in their native Toisan. This let them see other Chinese from their home area that also spoke the same dialect. NY and DC joined in eventually, and now you have teams from all over the US and Canada. Having participated in 9-man for more decades than I'd like to admit, I can say that the Labor Day Tournament has allowed me to make lasting friendships from all over North America. Interest in 9-man has grown and I've seen non-Chinese players participate locally, however, the Labor Day tournament is our FUBU. There is a great documentary on the history called 9-man.

@@user-iu1ru1qz7u 9man originated at a time where Chinese people were discriminated against. It was created as a safe space for Chinese Americans to play, avoid stereotypes and as a result of the Chinese exclusion act. This is why the rule was created . Yes it isn't inclusive and the rule could be changed but it also isn't as strict as it used to be about the ethnicity. There are teams out there that have people not of asian descent. The reality is discrimination and racism against asians still very much exists . This doesn't make it entirely right, but this is the reasoning for it.

Revolting behavior. If 9man rules were forced by the discrimination Chinese suffered when they created it, why do they still have these racist rules today? If the environment then was the cause, then the environment today makes them redundant. *Anyone can try out to play volleyball anywhere... except for 9man*. Racism isn't a tradition to uphold.The world has moved on(for good), but the organizers of this event clearly haven't, and it's clearly by choice.

Can we agree that "You have to be from X to play this sport" is something that humanity found to be something that we don't do anymore?

The context here is Chinese immigrants set up nets to play volleyball in the alley ways of Chinatowns after a long day in the sweat shops. The tournament is still held on the streets of Chinatowns to remind our past struggles to achieve the American dream. I agree this unique tournament will eventually open up to non-asians.

@@chenyitube And your dream has now been realized! Both DC Mini and Philly Mini (2 of the 4 major tournaments) along with other smaller tournaments are "Opens" which allow for anyone to play. However, NY Mini and NACIVT don't.

I would love to see the reaction to someone saying "6 out of 9 players have to be 100% white or your team isn't allowed to play".

shut up you moron, you clearly don't understand the history behind Chinese 9-man volleyball. Try learning the history behind it before you make an idiotic comment such as this one

it’s because of its history and how the chinese were segregated and excluded by THE LAW back then. Ignorant comment
