Professor Dr BM Hegde while speaking at Moneylife Foundation's first seminar on wellness and healthcare in Mumbai, says, "People think that popping a pill gives them instant relief. But one has to remember that behind every ill there is a pill".
Dr Hegde, a Padma Bhushan, is known for his unconventional views and oratory skills and has written several books including 'What Doctors Don't Get To Study in Medical School.' Addressing the participants, consisting of many doctors and senior citizens, Prof Dr Hegde explained in details about his experience in treating patients using alternative medicine and how people are misguided about various treatments and medicines, because our minds have been schooled to think that way. He talks about the importance of ayurveda, homeopathy and using simple stuff like ginger, garlic and pepper as treatment for common ailments.
Professor Dr Belle Monappa Hegde, a Padma Bhushan awardee in 2010, is an MD, MBBS, MRCP, FRCP, FACC, FRCPG, FRCPR, FRCPI and FAMS from Universities at Lucknow, Madras, Delhi, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow & Dublin.
Dr Hegde is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes, chairman of the State Health Society's Expert Committee, Govt of Bihar, Patna. He is former vice-chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education and former professor for cardiology of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London. Professor BM Hegde is also the Dean and Principal, Professor & Head of the Dept. of Medicine and the Director of PG studies of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.
Dr Hegde has won multiple awards like the Pride of India Award from Federation of Indian Associations of Northern California in recognition of Developing and implementing higher educational policies and programs, outstanding community service and promoting Indian culture, heritage, philosophy and values in 2003, Dr B C Roy National Award in 1999, Jagdish Chander Bose Award in Life Sciences in 1999, Distinguished Physician of India Award in 1995, Great Teacher Award in 1992, Gold Medal Madras University for MBBS, Best Oration Award, Best Communicator Award by Public Relation Society of India in 1997 and many more.
