After 5 years I still miss this wonderful man that I never met but like thousands of others feel like I knew. I remember waking up to go to the loo in the middle of the night (am in Australia) and my son said that someone famous he knew that I loved had died and then told me it was Mick. I burst into tears, which seems so silly as I never knew him. I have so many episodes of Time Team which will always be one of my favourite ever shows, (have an old episode on now aqbout the Bolton Mint) and will miss him, his joy for archaeology and sharing his knowledge, and those wonderful daggy jumpers. Beautiful man, always missed. What a sweetheart you were Mick.

karen glenn I agree. Also an Aussie. So moved by this man that I donated the UK equivalent of $66AUD to the Young archaeologists club in England. Figured it’d be enough for a trowel, or something.

So touching. I watched Time Team from the age of 9 (when it started) until it ended. It ignited my love of history. I’m not an emotional person, but I had to blink away the beginnings of tears when Phil’s voice cracked.

The detail about phils voice cracking is so true, I wasnt as strong as you to hold them back though haha. Lovely guy and a huge loss to everybody around him and involved in this part of archaeology

I was 20 when it started, 40 ish when it finished. It was half my life, watching these people. It's daft, people I'd never met, but micks death hit me. I'm not one for that sort of thing, celebs etc, but he was open, honest and loved.

An American here: Mick certainly knew his stuff yet he also showed us that he continued to learn and "stayed thirsty" for new information and knowledge. He didn't feign humility of the depth of his knowledge but instead was ready to guide us, even in a seemingly disappointing TT dig when Tony would cry out, "There's nothing here!" Mick would say, "Oh, but there is!" and he would proceed to teach us that even when you don't come up with what you thought you might, it's still useful information. He wasn't being a "Pollyanna" but true to his field of study. Many of us have - for the first time, perhaps - experienced that human history IS interesting and is ALWAYS unfolding and revealing something, and it is ACCESSIBLE to us ordinary folk and we OUGHT to realize it, appreciate it and can so easily become a student of that classroom. He's reminded me of the famous saying, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." Thank you, Professor.

True inspiration to me, my favorite Mick saying, and he could just be wonderfully strong and persuasive without folks realizing it, but this once his reply to someone wanting to do something one way... Mick says "Well, I think what we have now is called a different plan".... that's just an absolutely outstanding phrase. RIP Mick, your legacy is much larger than you could have imagined.

I never even knew he existed until well after he’d passed. But over the last few years I have voraciously watched and rewatched the episodes of Time Team and while I have always loved history and archaeology, Mick and his merry band of companions made it fresh and exciting. Well done all, R.I.P Mick and Robin both.

.....Yes, without question the duration of Time Team on Channel 4 is quite simply the greatest educational series ever to grace television screens, on par with the many BBC David Attenborough series. It had a universal appeal worldwide, was easily understood, with good humour, and showcased visually the knowledge and academia of the archeologists on the team that a young child or layman could easily relate too and enjoy/appreciate.....

I've recently been watching time team for the first time in many years, since 2011 at least. I didn't hear about his passing, I was too busy being an angsty teenager unfortunately. I'm so sad that he's gone. I'm enjoying watching him in the earlier time teams that I missed on account of not being born. Some of my earliest memories are of watching him on time team. Though I didn't go down the history route, I still have a deep passion for history and archaeology because of this man and all who made Time Team

I am an American with Scot/Irish/Welch heritage. It's been a great fascination of mine to get an idea of what life may have been like for my ancestors. When I first discovered Time Team three years ago of course I was familiar with Tony but I was immediately draw to Mick.) He bucked everything I thought I knew about archaeologists and made me rethink just how human they could be. I started watching early episodes then I came across on that blew me away when I say Mick had passed away. I never looked at Time Team the same. At first I was so sad them I asked myself what would Mick say, I can never say for certain because I never got the chance to meet him but I think that he would first and foremost, want every life he touched to think of him with a smile, stay true to who and what they are, and remain passionate about learning. Thank you for making my humble little life that much richer. R.I.P.

I didn't discover Time Team until 2023 on youtube and have watched every episode i can get ahold of. I came to love and enjoy all the team and their banter and interactions. mick had been gone for 10 years before i saw my first episode the program has a quality that is superbly entertaining and educational with individuals who are all so engaging , i am surprised that Time Team was never rolled out like those franchise type programs. seeing all the original team members recall memories of Mick was very heart warming

Always interesting and delivered information in a non patronising way for those just learning about archaeology - i loved that about him - no doubt he had endless qualifications etc but he explained things in a way that made you feel an equal, like I had a right to understand as much as the next person. He seemed to be an incredibly fair man and that's a rare thing - I never met him but I felt like he was explaining things to me when I watched TT and that I knew him - I thought he was simply lovely. I didn't realize that make has been gone for ten years now or coming up close to 10 years I honestly don't know when he died but I just saw this video in August 2023. I just ran across time Team videos sometime during the covid pandemic on searching for something worth watching KZfaq. I have been inspired by this show and each person on it. I feel some like the person who said that they'd never met Mick but they felt like they knew him. I'm sure of what I have seen on the program is just a small fraction of a man passionate about his craft with a heart for people. Blessings.
