The Oxford PPE Society was honoured to welcome Prof. Nancy Folbre to speak to us about her pioneering work, feminist economics and the future of gender inequality.
Prof. Nancy Folbre is Professor Emerita of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research explores the interface between political economy and feminist theory, with a particular emphasis on the value of unpaid care work. In addition to numerous articles published in academic journals, she is the editor of For Love and Money: Care Work in the U.S. (Russell Sage, 2012), and the author of Greed, Lust, and Gender: A History of Economic Ideas (Oxford, 2009), Valuing Children: Rethinking the Economics of the Family (Harvard, 2008), and The Invisible Heart: Economics and Family Values (New Press, 2001). She has also written widely for a popular audience, including contributions to the New York Times Economix blog, The Nation, and the American Prospect. Her current writing on the political economy of care provision can be seen on her blog, Care Talk.
Check out her latest book: "The Rise and Decline of Patriarchal Systems: An Intersectional Political Economy"

The more I learn about Feminist Economics, the more I realize just how overlooked are the social and humanitarian aspects. Thank you for a good interview.

Doesn't her definition of care (work that is devoted to the production or development or maintenance of human capabilities) exclude elder-care? In elder-care, are we really maintaining human capabilities? What about declining capabilities in Alzheimer's or cancer, is the carework there still fitting her definition of maintaining human capabilities? I'm not attacking btw, genuinely curious & fascinated by this topic

I am working on elder care and human capabilities in survivors of Alzheimer's can be much developed by care work, i.e. making attempts to strengthen their memory by activities, memory games, or reducing the rapid progression of dementia. The notion of 'active ageing' today is a dominating discourse and we need to look much beyond, if not 'active ageing' then ageing with 'care'.

I read "Who cares? A feminist critique of the care economy" by her today (rosalux.nyc/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/folbre_whocares.pdf) and she does include care of elderly people as care. "Care can never be reduced to purely economic terms. Nonetheless, it has important economic dimensions. The large transfers of money and time that take place within the family, the community, and the state are particularly significant for the welfare of dependents-children, the elderly, the sick, and individuals with disabilities."
