We had professors read their own reviews on Rate My Professor, and recorded their reactions.

Some teachers really do flat out suck though. It can't always be blamed on the student.

True but there are a handful of biased reviews that were obviously written by egotistical, disgruntled students who have their ass in a knot because they didn't get the "A" they felt they deserved.

Funny how criticism against students is so commonplace and accepted, but any criticism of a professor immediately makes a student a "sour grape".

Coulter Gill K. But not all students are lazy. A lot of professors are just terrible at their jobs. My math professor, for example, is one of the lowest rated professors at my college and I can personally verify that he is horrible at teaching. However, since everyone who rates him low did poorly in his class (except maybe 5 or 6 people), nobody cares or does anything about it.

Ariel theMermaid that’s true that not all students are lazy it’s just some students are pretty dumb and expect the easy way out. The problem is a lot of those ratings are from people who wanted a better grade than they deserve and so they complain about how bad it is just because they didn’t put in the work. I mean you have to respect them but yeah I've had bad teachers in the past. I think that you never realize how good a teacher/professor is until you finish your experience with them. I am finishing up my junior year of high school and I know at least 2 teachers that I hated in September that I now realize were excellent and will be missing them and dreading this year to end, even though we're in quarantine haha

what pisses me off is when i read reviews of my professors from students they've had years back, and they say exactly what i am currently having issues with. that just shows that those teachers do not even consider changing, listening, and taking criticism. for 4 years--you're telling me you've done NOTHING with that time to improve your lectures? im 100% that those things mentioned on rate my professor are being said in end of the year evaluations. so much for those huh?! those kinds of professors take me back to my shitty high school classes. end rant.

I remember when I was first selecting my classes at orientation and the teacher that was helping me told me that Rate my professor wasn't accurate at all. I coincidentally ended up selecting her class, something urged me to check rate my professor when I went home. Her reviews were horrible even from people who got As. I quickly switched teachers. That scenario convinced me to always use rate my professor because I do not want to go back to the days I was in high school and forced to take a crap teacher and fail. Especiallyyyyyy if im paying for it. I feel that if a majority of people are writing horrible reviews about a professor there has to be some accuracy.

That last professor is *WRONG.* It is *"not just a sounding board for students"* .. it is a *HELPFUL TOOL* for *PROSPECTIVE* STUDENTS who were "thinking about" taking their class. I for one *WISHED* I saw the reviews of this *HORRIBLE* teacher (if you want to call him a "teacher") .. who *INSTEAD OF* TEACHING his students.. he would tell them to "go online and learn for yourself" .. even though you are paying *THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS* for them to "teach" you. If I knew then what I know now.. I would of just did it on my own via the internet. Because basically you are paying *ONLY FOR A PIECE OF PAPER.*

@@strollas They jump on RMP when they get their first bad grade. Not reflective at all of the teacher's performance; only a disgruntled review of their BAD performance. My husband teaches 260 students every semester. About two of them jump on RMP to vent and attack. Nothing constructive, just libel and defamation. Profs are not given the opportunity to respond at all. Its a joke. RMP is worth $55 million. Someone ought to sue for defamation, bullying and harrassment, and discrimination, as profs are not allowed to respond.

@@fn336 I think people are smart enough to understand that some people who are awful and good professors don't get 37 terrible reviews back to back. Learn people for all the PHD you have dont make you a good teacher be mindful students are parents, and responsibilities and remember you were students once too.
Some teachers do need improvement of various degrees, but some students do need to take off their diapers and put on their big boy/girl pants.
@fn3364 жыл бұрын
Every single professor is required to have office hours. Students can go and ask for help. Students can also talk to the chairman, dean, etc. Students can write evaluations at the end of the semester. Instead, they found a "safe" way to vent by slamming a professor online, which has a global impact. The retribution is unbalanced and cruel and unusual. Free speech doesn't protect all forms of speech; you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. Someone will sue them successfully for libel and defamation which is being committed at an unusually large and global scale; for discrimination as professors cannot respond; and for false claims, as many reviewers are NOT even students, as RMP does not request transcripts or proof that the registrant is a student of the course.
@brandiphillips57753 жыл бұрын
