AVAA I adore this album and this band, mercifully they're by all accounts each decent, kind and passionate human beings underneath. 'Freudenfreude' as an antithesis of schadenfreude and as a manifesto for the entire album is equal parts powerful and catchy as hell. Their genuine sincerity is so, so refreshing, an antidote for modern cynicism.

You nailed it Skye. Tracks 3,4,5,6,7 create an insane stretch of music that currently is my favorite stretch of music I’ve heard all year. Agreed that 3.,4, and 5 exist on another plane. AVAA prof!

But your reviews capture those extra somethings, the magic nuances that are otherwise hard to put your finger on. AVAA I guess. Hiya Prof. Love that you’ve been reading up on British contexts and accents for yr reviews! And yes, Tang was popular in Australia when I was growing up. I’m not sure there were astronaut associations tho, I think that was reserved for ‘Space Food Sticks’, they were weird, chewy sort of chocolate things. Really enjoyed your review and enthusiasm for the album. I love it too, and for many of the same reasons, not the least of which is just how comfortable Idles appear to have become with the mission statement of love and vulnerability. Utterly love Pop Pop Pop, the use of Freudenfreude (as u say in the age of schadenfreude), the repetition, the droning industrial synth swells. Roy, another enchanting surprise package of range and sounds we haven’t heard before from Idles. And as for Dancer, it’s one of those occasional kick arse, ultra positive numbers that for a few minutes,can make me forget how damn old and how disabled I am. Tangk has gotta be among the first pieces of pop cultural reference to Britain under a king in 70years. It feels current. Yet in, the reflective space of a song like Grace I also feel it reaches back into Britain past, the repetition of the phrase ‘No God, No King’ acting like an inversion of revential and deferential proclamations of yore ‘One God, One King’. As you say, we’re not smashing monarchy and monotheism in the face here, we’re walking away from it, strangely, on a beach, with Chris Martin. Love is the Fing!.

Finally got around to listening, loved it! I couldn't get into the last one, but this one is great, and I'm happy they're taking more chances musically ❤ This record is SO Nigel

The concept of Freudenfraude exists in some other languages; Muditā in Sanskrit is the same concept basically. And I think Chinese has some variations on ‘joy’ that touch on it. Interesting what concepts certain cultures feel are important to put into language! Somehow I missed Idles, probably because although I’m from not far from Bristol, I moved overseas and they have zero presence where I am. So I’m now just listening to them with this album being my introduction! Avaa ❤

AVAA If what an album is ultimately ‘about’ (it’s thematic elements, its thesis etc) equated to how good it is, I would have liked the record. Unfortunately I have to like the songs and this record sounds like the lazy, slogan y stuff that, in a more cheeky context worked on previous records and which, in this more sincere context, needs way more emotional weight or way better writing to pull off. I genuinely don’t understand why everyone’s hyping this record, I hadn’t heard writing that was so bad it took me out of the songs in a long time (not in this genre anyway). Man if you’re a fan of the modern post punk I’d love to hear your thoughts on some Protomartyr albums! I love them and so does Iggy Pop!

There are two teams in Bristol - City and Rovers - neither have been in the top flight since the seventies as far as I know. It is a bit weird, far smaller clubs have been - and are currently in - the Premier League, but neither club have been near the top flight and yeah, doesn't really make sense for such a big city. If one of them ever makes it they could wake up a genuine sleeping giant.
