I have held a sign before but mine said day labor available with my phone number. I got quite a bit of work out of it. The people that say they are hungry are full of it cause i could eat 5 times a day here.

I am an Urban Missionary and I must say only 5% of shelterless individuals fly signs. I always encourage those who truly wants to give back to those in need to find a nonprofit organization and or Church that you investigated and feel are engaged in the city and donate to them! People truly in need do utilize their services on a daily basis. But if you do feel God's telling you to give directly to someone then give and let go. Don't worry where your money is going but where you are going ☝🏾. Give from your hearts not your your smarts!

when you give you are guilty of holding them back from helping them selves, Drugs and alcohol are the reasons why most of them are even out there.

I'm currently homeless and have been for several years now. I used to hold a sign at an intersection and I used the money to survive. I am now in a wheelchair and don't do the sign thing anymore but I could really use some help with housing, rehabilitation, and medical necessities. Donating to "charities" is utterly worthless because someone like myself who needs the help doesn't get any. Sure I can get food from a food bank but it's worthless because I have nowhere to store it or cook. So where does the donated money go if a person like myself who actually needs the help? People who live in a house, motel, etc get the food because they are the ones who can use it but they don't need housing. I use money that people give me to eat out every day which is expensive, buy bandages and other medical supplies for my legs that medi-cal should be covering but doesn't. Yes most of the people who are holding a sign and panhandling are on drugs and or alcohol. I'm homeless and have a cell phone, that's a ridiculous point to focus on. You can get an Obama phone for free but I pay for mine. You don't have to be a selfish asshole, just use your judgment and eyes, you can usually tell if someone is on dope or alcohol, or look to clean to be homeless. Being selfish is not the answer.

let me add to this education. especially knoxville tn. i was homeless for two years. i never panhandled. I did have help. my mother did buy my first bus pass so i could seek work. i did do some things that were in the grey area of the law. nothing that ever consisted of theft, drugs or burglary. more of ignoring licensing laws. all of what i did to get off the streets was out of otivation. many people in the shelter had checks. you could tell the first and fifteen of the month because of how few people were there. they would take their checks ,some of which were over 1200 dollars, and go to cheap hotels in known drug areas. they would bang their heroin smoke crack and drink until their check was gone. afterwards they would return to the shelter and wait for the next check. the saddest part is that the shelters are not set up for people like me. i worked at a restaurant sometimes until 2 am. no matter what time i returned to the shelter i had to be awake at 630 am and down in the chapek by 7 am. for weeks i ran on 3 to 4 hours of sleep every night and during this time was often working 16 hours. to say the least i wanted off the street. on my days off i would find a safe place to sleep. the shelter had no mercy. some of the good employees would often allow me to sleep in because they knew i worked. the good people would often quit the job because of the way people who were trying to get out were treated. one of the staff members favorite thing to do was to start arguements with people he didnt like so he could ban them. sadly to this many good people are barred from assitance at KARM due to this mans pass time. I recall one night i had worked very late and my boss had given me yeast rolls and pulled pork along with some other food to eat for dinner. the rules of LEXTRAN forbid eating on the bus. i walked in with food and the man yelled at me because i asked to eat. i had to show my clock out stub every night to get in. if the time i clocked out wasnt consistant with the travel time nominally neccessary to travel from work to the shelter they would not let you in. i ended up throwing the food away and sleeping hungry. the man simply enjoyed being cruel to others. i was approached by one of the leaders once asking me i wanted to go into the program. he said was a model candidate for this. i thought about and decided no. the program would have cost my job and after the program is finished you have one month to leave the shelter and if i remember correctly you cannot return for one year. sounded more like a way to get funding and then force someone out of the system after they had been used. I am going to agree with this news broadcast. MOST HOMELESS DO NOT BEG and MOST BEGGERS ARE NOT HOMELESS

So what if these people ask for money. Most of these people need help. These Caucasian folks want all of the money. If people are willing to give in God's will that's them. They envy these people because they make more money then them. They can't stop me for giving panhandlers money because I'm willing in the name of God. I careless what they do with the money. I don't judge other human beings like some of these other humans do.

If someone works but make too much for welfare and panhandles for a little bit is that okay? Let me tell you my story. About ten years ago my husband kids and I was in a house fire we lived on the first floor some chick on the third floor thought it was a great idea to get drunk fry chicken then fall asleep she burned our apartment building down. At that point in our life, my husband just got back from Iraq fighting for his service-connected disability I was working 40 hours a week I was in night school also getting my law degree. We also have two kids our daughter was 1 our son was 6 back then. Of course, it happened on June 3 we paid our rent on the second our landlord would not reimburse us for rent or security deposit nine months later we won it in court. We were in the shelter we had to pay co-pays for medications for our son who has asthma and a stomach condition and we needed to keep our car to continue working and going to law school where we come from there is no public transportation. So I panhandled for one hour a day after work I saved every penny for our apartment and we did not spend a penny of it every day in the morning heading to work I deposited it in our savings account so no one at the shelter would steal it and also interest would accrue. If I didn't do that we wouldn't have had an apartment until after we won the civil lawsuit. Instead, we got it in four months. We also volunteered when we were homeless every Sunday (wasn't required) at the soup kitchen and also to this day my husband volunteers at the food pantry after we got our apartment five days a week when I was at work and our son at school our daughter watched him doing that until she got to school age. We have given back for ten years almost for what I had to do for four months Not all are the same we are very Catholic and know we need to put in more then we take out and we have done so.

exactly simon ritche. I volunteered at a local soup kitchen. They received thousands of dollars from various businesses but were serving up deer meat to the patrons.for months. Where does all this money donated to charities go? That should be the subject of an investigation.

There are all kinds of organizations they can go to for help. They have kids so can probably get welfare and food stamps. If they can't get work, go to the next town or city and look there. Look in the newspapers and take anything until you can get back on your feet. The wife can get a job almost anywhere at McDonalds, Burger King, etc. They always seem to be hiring. Maybe the mechanic needs to find a new line of work.

First of all, let me say that it takes what it takes for an addict to reach their absolute bottom before they change. Fact: addiction costs money and there are 2 ways to go about it until a decision to clean up is made. They can panhandle where the choice is up to potential giver or they can take it by force leaving victims with no choice. It's a devastating position to be in for someone holding a sign. Detox and long term treatment isn't readily available unlike jails and prisons where a profit can be made from their incarceration. This country is fucked in so many ways and most of its citizens are like blind sheep believing mainstream media bull shit.

Just because some people lie and con people doesn’t mean most panhandlers really are homeless and need help. There are cons in every facet of making money wether from regular employment or panhandling. Many people have extra money and how else can you ask your brothers to share? We are only here for a short period of time, and in this temporary existence cant we share with our brothers? Can’t we share with each other? Many people who give actually do it for selfish reasons because it actually makes them feel better about themselves. Also if people aren’t spending their money on drugs why can’t they buy things like phones and apartments? Isn’t that what you want? You can’t just eat and eat and eat...!
