The long-awaited A1 for Sony is here in the form of the Profoto A1X. A light update to the popular A1 now allows Sony shooters, like myself, to have an awesome on and off-camera solution with full TTL and HSS capabilities and of course, the reliability that comes with Profoto lights!

It’s beautiful. What are your thoughts on getting this vs. the other Sony flash that i own already the FM60? That flash, although bulky has some really great features like the the built in video lights, and how the head can swivel and has built in bounce card.And is it worth so much more than the Godox?

Great Review! I'd just purchased the A1 last weekend so I wasn't too happy about this announcement. But after talking with my rep., they're allowing me to return it and upgrade with no issues. Also, there's suppose to be a software update for the A1 to have the new menu system as the B10. Looking forward to the Canon release!

Hi Richie. I have been using my A1x and now the A10 since release. Never overheated for me. Batteries also last quite long, but all depends on your shooting style, so I would recommed an additional battery. No issues here with mine on my Sony cameras.

What is the difference with a TTl flash like a Sony brand/Nikon with remote ttl etc. in terms of making your pictures and getting the end result. It’s still a flash and a some serious extra money. Nice to have some things like magnetic accesories etc.but what brings this really for making a difference ?

I would love to see the thing that nobody is talking about: The AF assist beam and how it works on this unit. Can you focus on a plain white wall with absolute cero light as with DSLRs? its a laser beam? it would be the biggest selling point at least for me as a wedding photographer

Does the modeling light act as a focus assist beam when shooting AF-S ? This is where I still used my mirrored 5dmk3/4 bodies for red focus assist in low light receptions. I sure hope the A1X momentarily emits a white LED beam to prevent focus hunt in the Sony mirrorless.

@@RaphNogalPhotography Thanks for responding!! Godox does not emit any sort of focus assist. It would be fantastic if the Profoto would emit a burst of LED light momentarily just for the Sony AF to acquire contrast so it eliminates hunting in low light. This is where both my Fuji and Sony fail me in AF hunt in some venues. The oldschool mirrored Canon gear in low light never fails me in locking AF (external flash/red focus assist) with almost no AF hunting or propagation delay when you push the shutter button and acquiring the shot. Sony's orange AF assist on camera simply is not effective as it typically is blocked by the lens.

Hi Raph, thanks for the review. Quick question... the Zoom range, is it only manual (meaning you have to adjust by hand) or is it adjustable from the circle remote? and I mean when your flash is OFF the camera.

Hello Raph! So friend, I have a Sony a9ii and I intend to buy a Profoto A1x flash. I shoot dances and carnival and I need multiple shots in manual mode. You know if he heats up or holds up just fine. I have problems with my Sony f60! They say the Profoto doesn't overheat.

I'd like a how to setup the Profoto as on camera with a Sony A7R4, settings on both etc. SS? I use it with the diffusion dome and black bar on the top unless I drop to SS 160.

Susan - are you using a Sony version of the Profoto A1? If not you will not be able to use HSS (ability to go above 1/160th)... It has to be a Sony version on the hotshoe to get HSS and TTL.

@@RaphNogalPhotography Yes, I bought the Sony version of the A1X for my A7RIIII. I've been through all the camera and flash settings and can't figure out how to effect the sync speed of the camera. I have traditionally used speedlights to enable ISO 100, but I seem to see people using the A1X with auto ISO and shooting much higher ISOs. I'm just looking for cleaner images overall, since I am often shooting in not very good light. Any advice or any video tutorials you can do I'd really appreciate!

Hi, thanks for great details. I have Profoto A1X not compatible with Sony. I was wondering can I purchase any tool to make my A1X a Sony compatible one. Or, should I have to buy new Profoto A1X that compatible with Sony? Appreciated if anybody respond.

Hey - unfortunately there is nothing you can do to make it compatible as the hotshoe is different - when the A1X is ON-camera... It will work prefectly fine OFF-camera as long as you have the proper AirTTL remote for Sony. This way you will get full TTL and HSS. Hope that helps!

Hi, what is the advantage of flash photography for Sony cameras with Profoto A1/A10 over native Sony speedlight 60RM? please advise.

I think the biggest is the reliability and functionality of the A1/A10. It's also part of a bigger ecosystem - meaning you can use your A1/A10 on and off-camera and while on-camera it can trigger other Profoto lights (like the B10, B1X, etc) and if you have a Profoto AirTTL Remote (for Sony), the A1/A10 will work off-camera as well and connect to other Profoto lights. There are also hundreds of modifiers you can get for the Profoto products. It's a premium product, but you're paying for the brand, functionality, and reliability. There isn't much talk about the native Sony flashes - I actually don't know a single person that owns one. Hope that helps.

Although I have Profoto gear but I thought if I invest and use Sony flash system, it will be more match between speedlight and camera (on and off camera) for setting and accuracy. On the other hand I’m wondering why all professional photographers are shooting with other brand rather than Sony brand of speedlight! Despite of various Profoto light shaping modifiers and despite of comparing prices (which is much higher for Profoto), as you mentioned reliability and functionality are the main concern. Hey Raph, quick question. I've heard that it doesn't work at x-sync on Sony cameras? Have you observed this phenomenon? If yes, do you have any workarounds? Thanks in advance!

Hey Pranav. I have not experienced this. Mine work just fine with x-sync. Are you using a SONY A1/A1X on a sony camera? or a different branded A1/A1x on your sony camera? Also, make sure you turn "wireless flash" to ON in the sony menu.

Hey Randee.. I have no idea, as I don't have your equipment to examine. Make sure you are using the Sony -specific A1X and also make sure the hotshoe is seated properly. Also, make sure the toggle on the side of the A1X is switched to TTL... it's just on the left side of the A1X flash. Let me know if any of that helped.

ATG has a much better models. You should give them a test 1. Nissin MG10 set. Free/includes on of the best transmitter 2. Nissin MG80 set. Transceiver flashes for radio zoom with Group A and B 3. The world's best selling flashes for amateur cameras like A7r III, A9 and below, Godox Buying a Profoto is like buying a dated ATG's QFlash T2 /or overpriced Pocket Wizard. Facts on weakness of Profoto A1 & A1X: > $1,200 weak light > Only 76W >No ATG AF Assist Beam > No ATG Auto2 > CAN NOT do *wireless radio TTL if you get flash off the hotshoe > *come up with $450 for a transmitter that does not have ATG AF Assist Beam. How dumb! > out of **battery, out of luck > **come up with $120.00 Now, ATG/Nissin sold more than Profoto A1 series combines: + $700.00 with a free simple to operate TTL/M/Z transmitter + 165W. Much more than the other guy + ATG AF Assist Beam + ATG wireless 2.4GHz radio 24-200 zoom. Good luck on the other guy * ATG world's tri batteries. Run out or need more, within 2 miles and you got fresh batteries + ATG LED light + ATG built-in wireless radio remote camera/flash trigger. Not on they other guy + Faster recycle time + No Shutdown + No overheating + 2 years warranty by ATG/Nissin + So good that major buyers rather buy this then the other guy. If you need power up to 2,000WS, then ATG is the only one. Which is less $700.00 or $1,500.00? Which one can do radio 24-200mm zoom, 165WS or 76WS?
