Ah, the dreaded time of wearing progressives all the time, and all of the sacrifices they come with has arrived! But, did you know you don't really have to make all of those sacrifices all of the time? Not only can you get a lens that fits the majority of your needs more readily, but you can get a lens designed for specific tasks to really amp up the usability!
We hear about those problematic progressives all the time. From the basic "I feel like I'm stepping up everywhere I walk" to "I just can't use them comfortably" I know a lot of tricks of the trade to reduce and alleviate those, but there are almost always trade-offs. The real trick is knowing when and what to trade off to create the right lenses, and often that can mean multiple pairs, sacrificing certain things in each pair!
Now, let's get into what all of that really means! Watch the video for the details!!

One with the online bargain Ben’s get the progressive right is by doing 30% far 30% mid and 30% near. You have actually restored my faith in opticians. I can see that if I work with an optician that cares and works with me to put together a lands is based on my prescription that will work for me for what I need them for, that would be a better solution than the generic online solutions that work in general. I’ve spent too much money this time around I’m going to have to live with the general classes I got at the bargain bin online. But next time around I’ve learned from this experience to be better informed on progressive lenses and that it can be a great solution above and beyond the generic solutions online thank you for your responses.

Very interesting. At -2.25 I note that the reading portion of the progressives are as corrected for distance as they can be. The intermediate and even the reading is acceptable for walking around the office and computer work. I am thinking keep the lower reading portion as is, and increase the upper 2/3 minimally to create the widest viewing angle, keep a pair at home at the computer and at work. Accept that I will have some blur at the end of a long corridor but see everything well up to a powerpoint presentation. Hopefully I can have that without a line? I want to get a system that will cover me now as an early presbyope through to my 60s and beyond. The progressives I have as a general "around the house" or "out and about" work well, but not for the ~40" 4k monitors I use.

We do this pretty foten with progressives for wearers over a 2.00 add. Sometimes the task specific PALs aren't up to the task as their algorithms just aren't as advanced (to keep cost lower). What I've found is the siko surmount with distance power bumped a half to a full diopter and that same power removed from the add is perhaps one of the best computer pairs in existence (though I do need to experiment more with the DAL lenses, as my initial attempts with those have been HIGHLY succesful). This affectively reduces your far range a little, widens the corridor some, and still provides full near power in a lens that is recorded to already have the widest zones of any lens availble today (but a bit wonky to get use to for wearers of other PALs due to the way the corridor controls distortion)

at +1.00 you're still totally on the "happy" area of the +1.00 SV (over your daily RX) vs doing a specific workstation lens at this time. Your eyes can still handle the extra power needed for fine near work, and will just take the strain off at the screen. I have a +0.75 and a +1.00 set over my normal RX at my work bench and my home respectively (go figure I sit that much nearer my work at home)

I just got some Zeiss Smartlife 1.6 Individual progressive in some rimless frames and have to say they work so much better on the computer than my last progressive which were from a UK high street chain opticians. I can do more work on the computer (24" screen) without needing to swap to dedicated computer glasses, in actual fact I have not had to swap them since I got them. Only thing is for distance sometimes when turning your head left or right get a slight wavy sensation, sometimes it's noticeable and at other times not. Had them now about 4 days, maybe a few more days are needed to get used to them or is there some other issue?
@ThatGlassesGuy03

Just a matter of getting use to the dynamics of that particular lens, especially when optimized for arms length field it'll give that sensation to some degree, but man oh man is it so worth the tradeoff of being able to tackle most all things well in one pair 😁. If anything it could be fit just a smidgen high, but dropping it would reduce the arms length utility a bit. It's both a fitting and design choice coming in to play for your use case 😁, ild say you found a helluva optician 😁

A different lens design. Bad progressive design selection for your needs. I suspect they opted for a distance priority lens to open the field up for you, but this will noticeably pinch down and push down the near field with almost no intermediate zone in most progressives. In your specific use case I would recommend something a little different entirely for the press box, whether that's a digital add lens or a lined bifocal so you can keep the crisp and wide distance zone and still have good large near zone, or a custom progressive with specific fields is up to you and/or your optician 🙂

I got a pair of progressives for driving. The closeup / reading distance part is what is confounding to me. I don't really need that closeup distance to drive and would prefer that the bottom portion be taken up by the intermediate distance focus. Having the intermediate / computer distance would serve me better since besides having far distance to see the road, I only need to view the interior of the car and to be able to see my instrument panel. So I asked my optician about it and he told me it was impossible, that the lens calculations would not allow this. So I then asked, what about task vision or dual focus progressives? My distance vision is roughly +2 and my add is +1.5, so in my non-optician way of thinking, isn't it conceivable for someone to also have intermediate vision of +2 and reading of +1.5? would this theoretically work for me? My optician gives me a definite no. What is your opinion?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
There are driving specific progressives that are designed to prioritize Distance and arms length with a V or modified T shape channel depending on the brand. That doesn’t mean everyone has access to them but they exist. As for the task specific, your powers aren’t correct for the breakdown but those absolutely exist as well (distance +2 intermediate 2.75 near 3.50 very roughly based on the 1.5 add.). These can be crafted custom from any multi focal style lens or a progressive that is designed specifically for the office or computer only use

I bought 600 buck progressives last week for computer work and they are horrific to use. That's the direction I lean 😎, I almost always fit an SV until the range and utility isn't there (usually tested with proper trial lenses at the correct rx, and some nicer lens tech than cheap readers, but st the end of the day the idea is the same). Though, I'm curious which lens you got for your computer progressive, most people do like those pretty well even if it is ny last choice... unless it's just a run of the mill everyday progressive and not something thay was properly tuned for your needs.

I knew I remembered seeing an article about customizing progressive lens the last time I had to get eyeglasses. I hate getting new glasses because I am never happy with them. I go to a particular optician to get my eyeglasses, and this checkup I went to a dr/provider un his office so if there are any issues, they have to work it out. I asked the doctor & the optician, can I have a pair of progressives where the intermediate corridor is larger, and the reading and distance /driving smaller and was told not really. I can get progressives like I have know, that I hate, neck stain, headaches plus another pair for the computer, but if I have to get up at work, which I do a lot, I have to switch the pairs. Ugh! I saw your video I see it is possible to tweak the lens for all 3 , so now I am confused as to why I cant try these? The dr said she tweaked my prescription which should alleviate some of my issue and if not I can get those task glasses. I cant drive out to where you are unfortunately. What do I need to ask for? I know am about a 7 distance and 1.5 for reading.

I would consider doing remote, but this time I said I am getting my exam and my eyeglasses in the same place to avoid the "you didnt get them filled here issue" I really wanted to know that it is possible to have a lens made with a larger intermediate area and still be able to drive with them. And to be able to ask for this. I actually pulled out my first progresive lens glasses. They were 2 pairs / 6 yrs ago.They arent as strong of course & the frame was quite more narrow. I was dissueded from narrow frames my last 2 pairs due to "my needs" yet I am seeing a heck of a lot better with these old suckers! Including driving. No need to lift my chin all day at work. On the frame, make sure they’re marked so you don’t mix them up. There’s a host of ways to do that. As for the lenses. There is no “best”. What works for some doesn’t work do others and some lenses handle certain parameters better than others. It will be different for every set of parameters 😌

I've been wearing progressives for years now and I've gotten used to taking them off when I need to read something. Would a single vision lens that covers the area of my desktop (i.e., from about 16-40") be a good solution for me? What would I gain from a bifocal?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually a lot to unpack. Depending on your age and required add power it might not even be possible to cover that 16-40" range with just a single power, which is where a bifocal of some sort would be advantageous. I would assume your correction in your glasses for distance is somewhere in the -2 to -4 range based on what you've been doing. As far as what a good solution is, I don't have nearly enough to go on here, and would require a more in depth conversation. Happy to work with you and make you lenses if you wish, but this is definitely a conversation to have with your optician so all of your needs can be met 😁

Now I'm left to figure it out on my own. I did briefly discuss it with the optometrist, who gave me Rx for computer PAL and computer bifocals. I'm trying to figure out re: computer bifocals: what portion of the 16-40" range would the D cover and what portion would the rest of the lens cover? Computer Multifocal Rx: SPH -3.00 CYL -0.50 AXIS 167 ADD +1.00 SPH -3.00 CYL -0.25 AXIS 090 ADD +1.00 PAL Rx: SPH -4.25 CYL -0.50 AXIS 167 ADD +2.25 SPH -4.25 CYL -0.25 AXIS 090 ADD +2.25

@June Gloom well that's a shame. FWIW, Costco has great glasses for the money on a budget, and typically has very well trained opticians due to their pay scale and cert requirements. At any rate, with a 2.25 add power and at 55, your eyes have pretty minimal ability to accommodate remaining and as such you rely on the lens to do the bulk of the work for anything from About 40" and closer. A lined bifocal specifically for the computer is a good (relatively) inexpensive option there. If you opted for single vision distance and removing your glasses for near is definitely workable. Your eye (based on powers provided) will naturally be in focus at a ~8" reading distance. In this way you could also utilize a really narrow frame that you can easily look under to make a faux bifocal 😏 one of my old tricks for those on a budget with a prescription like yours.... though, that was more 2006-2010 era when slim frames were easy to come by! Hopefully this gives you a better sense of direction as you proceed 😁

Absolutely! I use them regularly for myopic customers that basically have built in readers 😝. Seiko surmount is king of intermediate, zeiss offers a better distance priority but the intermediate is still squeezed down a pretty good bit. Pro tip: sunglass lens designs are GREAT here. They prioritize distance to intermediate with a sacrificed near zone 😁 master tip.. ask for reduced add in your distance glasses to help create a wider channel as well 😈

It is convenience for me to have a test specific lenses like office lens: And I found that it is not that practical for me unless I'm sitting around before the laptop more than 5-6hours a day. The more convenient lens is the ultimate progressive lens which can solve the narrow corridor problem. There isn't. For me it is better to have a progressive lens for daily use. Kindly can you help to identify my lens type, How can I mark or identify the width of the corridor from mid to all the way down to the reading area to draw the same window as they show on the catalogue like to vack to back brackets here ) ( Or to put it another way, .. I doubt that I have been charged for wide corridor lens but actually they are ordinary narrow corridor,.. that is what mostly defined in catalogue or videos as wide reading field of view ... Just to be clear here I am not talking about length of corridor.. I did device a way, I wish I could share pics here .. by magnifying the fine net through the progressive lens and it will show the magnification according to the progression of the addition number, after drawing the outline on this progression I am able to get virtually the same curves ) ( but is it the right way to do it and challange the optician or the lens supplier?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 ай бұрын
First of all anyone selling you on a wider corridor… just walk out the door. Second. Power determines map as much as lens design. It could very well be you got a design that offers a wider zone at a specific portion of the lens (reading in this case) but the power increase pinched it right back down to be the same. Some shops actually have digital lens mappers but Ild say they’re far and few between, you’re not going to just look at a lens and draw your corridor (at least the average person can’t). Also of note any improvement in width of field will be marginal at best and maybe a millimeter or two if you’re lucky. Of course for the eye to perceive that is a notable increase, and that’s the rub, how our eyes actually perceive the lens design is what really matters, not so much the map of the design. The lens design can be verified by marks engraved into the lens if you want to verify the lens type you paid for is what was delivered that’s the way it will be checked. Not by an arbitrary marking of the corridor.
@designaids

I was kind of forced to develop understanding of progressive lens and fittings as no one was able to make my glasses, PD error, height error, skew or other very basic errors, finally I did my own glasses So here I am and feel that I unnecessarily spend money on getting wide corridor lens when there is no change .. can I send you an email?

@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 3 жыл бұрын
Close but not quite. There are task specific progressive designs that still allow for full reading and some distance vision(from 5 to 12 feet of range depending on the chosen design and compromises), with really large fields at arms length. For multiple monitors and data entry we often end up with an executive lined bifocal, but rarely is the answer just a single vision lens with +1.00 diopter of power. Alternatively you can take an older inexpensive PAL and split the add between.. adding part of it to the distance and having effectively a full field intermediate range with near power. Lots of creative ways to make it work, but for most presbyopic wearers, a single pair of single vision won't do the job (multiple SV on the other hand, can, and I do it that way once in awhile... very rarely with a proper fit and other proper lens design choices :) )

Unless your computer range is extremely close you would be better served by a +1... unless you have a need for a distance prescription you aren't aware of (latent hyperopia) very common. Essentially our eyes can accommodate and create the add on their own. So for example if you needed a +1.50 to see distance, your eyes can dial that in on their own and you can even see 20/20ish uncorrected. But it leaves little reserves for reading and computer. In this case a +1.75 for computer would be more comfortable. But in general a +1.25 is the power needed in an emmetrope to be able to see at the typical computer distance of around 31", whether that power comes from within the eye, its accommodation, or a lens in front of the eye is irrelevant :) . Some medical conditions can also alter this to some degree as well. The eye has plenty of accommodation power until we reach 40+ years old where it starts to become noticeable and problematic (and where progressives become helpful like this video is about) :) at which point, it steadily decreases further over the next 20 or so years until we have no accommodation left this is when you can see the occasional 2.75 or stronger add power on top of whatever required distance power is needed. Usually most will have had cataract surgery by this point and are already relying on external lenses via glasses for that add power 🙃.... hope that makes sense 😁

None of them are anything I would just call “the best” especially considering they all make so many different designs and prioritize different things. It’s just branding. If you ask about a specific lens(e.g. Varilux X 4D), situation, and daily needs, then you can determine a best lens for that set of parameters, it’s almost never just one brand and never ever just one lens. Varilux is more marketing than lens technology, and IOT has been ahead of their designs for decades.

The "office" progressives are useless. You see that nice wide zone throughout. Then you discover that they start at 10 feet for distance, but they do not offer high adds such as 2.50. They only go up to 1.75. Without the higher add (& the 10 feet "starting distance", you in essence have a "single vision" lens set at 5 feet.

Computer specific lenses definitely make a huge difference on a larger screen, but you should still be able to find a spot that clears things up. The good ole natural is a big fat hybrid barrel shaped corridor with minimal pinch at the "intermediate" bump under 2.00Add (which would rarely be exceeded in a proper intermediate - near setup, while it was never known for an expansive distance zone used as a normal pal, it actually functions beautifully when trimmed down and in moderate powers really only requiring the no add and 80% add zones to have good efficacy🙂, on the flip side I also like anyone's freeform compensated designs as rx complexity increases allowing access to much better designs than what traditional OPAL would be. Now, with lined bifocal backorder and not available at all in newer blue blocking materials we've actually been shifting to a digital backside freeform ground in bifocal(in my shop at least) with incredible success across the board for wearers of all walks of life as a computer focused pair (read not necessarily an office use where more than 3' distance might be required) 😁
