I think it's because a lot of people used to watch Projared's videos back when they were younger, but his content is still nice even after you grow up. So it gives you good nostalgic vibes without that awkward "oh God, I watched cringy stuff like this?" moment you usually get when you watch old YT content, stuff like Smosh or Nostalgia Critic. Atleast that's how it feels for me, reminds me of when I was 14

*Fun Fact:* Jim the Knight wasn’t a prophesied hero who was predestined to kill Varalys (the demon who split Princess Ann into fairies). He was just an ordinary knight who decided to step up and defeat Varalys himself. It’s kinda refreshing to have a protagonist who isn’t a chosen hero, but a regular person who just got fed up with how things were and decided to do something about it. It shows that you don’t need to be “the chosen one” to make a difference.

Yes, but then you won't be able to tell if you're hurting enemies or if they're hurting you. Sure your health bar will visibly go down, but with enemies, their health bar just flashes each time a hit is registered and it doesn't stay on-screen for long. There are two distinct beeping noises for who's dealing damage to whom - a higher-pitched beep for when you're dealing damage, and a lower-pitched one for taking it.

Part of me holds some respect for Hydlide as it was actually an important game in the origin of JRPGs that largely fell victim to circumstance in the West. I will agree, though, that while this game was first, games like Legend of Zelda, Ys, and Dragon Quest took everything Hydlide did and made it objectively better. The game is a damn chore to play and is plagued with poor design choices and artificial padding.

Me again, watching out of nostalgia. The combat system in this game, as well as the game itself, were inspired by the Tower of Druaga, an old arcade game from Namco released in 1984. That game featured the same combat system, though it worked much better and your character didn’t bounce off enemies when he attacked. Plus, there were actually (rather smooth) animations for his sword coming out when going into attack mode, which Hydlide lacks.

One thing I think is a shame for an early game I think Hydlide's story could have been charming if the ENTIRE game was just better. I can't even make it more specific. There are so many things wrong with this game. Its just....yeah just better.

Fun fact for anyone watching this: The Jewel actually does do something. 1) It's needed to make the final boss appear. 2) It increases HR. HR determines how much you regenerate when you stand still. Stupid, I know.
