LOVE Jared's reaction to the "fairy" spell lmao 🤣 I honestly love the new version though. Adds a fun new twist on exploration imo and was implemented brilliantly. And all the subtle animations of the chicken-link sprite are just the chef's kiss.

It's great and really catches people that know the game off guard. And it also eliminates the whole "I'll just fly over this whole room" exploit. And i guess it was neccessary with how much vertical platforming there is in this version.

@@shinrailp1416 Yeah, it totally could have killed some of the more challenging new areas if you had access to og fairy mode lol. But also still being able to fight and pick up items as a chicken is awesome. I even fought a couple of the bosses in chicken mode just for fun and one of them was actually WAY easier 😆

My boulder circle gave me 2nd is South East. This means no one else can spoil the boulder circle solution for you, as its randomized per game.

Yeah the boulder puzzle is randomized every playthrough just as the hints.

@@patyos2 I'm also guessing the 4th slot will just be skipped being given a hint on, since that wise man peaces out? That would make it harder to brute force before getting hints for the other directions.

@@Shalakor yes you can figure out with 7 hints, you can find the wisemen again somewhere else in a secret location though for a secret upgrade

Personally, I'm not bothered by our lack of a Palace 2. This version of AoL us just full of fun, extra crap that we haven't seen, and I've seen Zelda 2 played through a lot, so seeing the new content is great! Also, as I do, thank you so much for doing another play through of a Zelda 2 game! I know plenty of people didn't like this game, don't like this game, or are so young they've never even played it; just accepting the words of others that it's bad, outdated, or unnecessary fir what Zelda is, today, but as someone with legitimately fond memories, from way back so long ago, I'm personally very much enjoying watching you trudge through it, using info you already have, and overcoming the new stuff that makes this different. Thanks very much!😊

I'm so happy you figured out the downstab bridge. It's so satisfying. Did you notice the fish respawn after a short time? just in case we whiffed the jump. I appreciate the respawning crumble blocks too, had really made the entire experience much better to not have to leave each room and try again

I only figured out the downstab bridge on the second version near the broken bridge to the temple where you get the boots. The first one I crossed with chicken and the jump spell. You can just barely make it while avoiding the enemies. The second one is too long for this to work. So after wasting a few minutes trying to figure out a way to make chicken work I finally figured out it wouldn't and needed something else. It felt pretty satisfying doing it for the first time.

Oh you know it’s a good retro game when half-way you turn into a chicken(I absolutely adore that change and the cute animations) The fish pogo stick execution was also awesome! On the Octorok room all I can think it’s a joke the slime switched places with it unless there is a secret in there activated later.

@@jacethomas5562 No, there's nothing special about these rooms. Death Mountain has several dead end rooms that just lead to 3 Octorok's. Just like several palaces have dead ends for no reason

Apparently, HoverBat is working on a new feature in a future update that lets us select a sprite for Link. People are currently allowed to submit custom sprite sheets. Already saw Simon Belmont and a few others. Can’t wait for that.

The game design is such high quality. On the bridge toward fairy palace, there is a gap with a fish. The jump is deceivingly long, and the fish is positioned in just the right spot. Its easy to go left with a down stab, but going right is a pretty tough jump that seems to get everybody. This is all by design. It lets the player naturally figure out the fish puzzle going one way, and showcasing the fairy's use going the other.

Meh. I was impatient and just started experimenting after I had 5 of the order. Only took a few guesses to get it. I dunno if you can even ever talk to the chicken wizard again for his hint. I never saw him again on my playthrough lol.

@@nanoglitch6693Same. I got five and managed to guess it correctly first try. Even without number 4, if you want to do it properly then it's just process of elimination after you get the other 7.

Game seems very good Jared. I'm enjoying watching you play through games like this and Final Fantasy in all new ways. I hope more developers do things like these moving forward, so we retro game fans can have more experiences like this. I'm definitely going to have to play through this myself at some point. You've sold me on the game. Glad to see YOU having a good time. I know that when you do something you love for a living it can kind of suck a lot of the joy out of it sometimes. It's always good to see you playing something that can bring back that magic we all know and love. Some games are just happiness in a bottle. Glad you're still able to find those, man.

2:56 correct level up (heart)✅ Got flower -> "fairy" spell ✅ 16:00 go left (1st) not right as you climb up. (X) 17:12 ✅ Safety fairy acquired✅ Discovers northern pier and cave ✅ doesn't have raft or water-walking boots yet. Things to remember from 1st game: 1> overworld patches have secrets in them (like 🧚, exp bags, magic (red) jars, 1-up dolls, quest target objectives, ❤,🧴, quest givers, etc.) Jared has excellent fighting skills but has trouble jumping. He decided to write down clues to volcano Island (1st e, 2nd w, 3rd se, 4th didn't check swordsman (down thrust) yet in mido town) ✅

The boulder circle is something you definitely want to explore as soon as possible. I had five clues and I just guessed the last three and managed to get it right on my first try. Definitely worth it. Chicken Link caught me off guard on my playthrough too. It's barely a replacement for Fairy unless you attach the jump spell to it, which is my only gripe about it. You should eventually head back to Death Mountain. That extra life you saw and thought you needed fairy to get is possible to get now with the right pathing. Finally, you can press "O" any time you're in side-scrolling mode to bring up an option menu. If you want to avoid square by square hunting for secrets one option will cause most hidden tiles to flash. You can also change the music, and there are some real banger versions of the Zelda 2 themes.

I’ve been waiting to see your reaction to the chicken spell. I love the little humor they added. That was a great touch. I bet they changed the fairy to a chicken to not let you cheese parts of the game, since you could fly anywhere in a room with it. Can’t wait to see you get farther. There are so many cool surprises that I know you’ll love.

I was looking forward to Palace 2, but honestly all this exploration and newness is exciting and fun. I think this game would stand on its own, but as a childhood Zelda 2 stan, the constant happy brain tickles of "familiar, but NEW!" is just great. The "Fairy" spell is hilarious, and the way it was changed to not completely and almost immediately nullify 90% of the value of Jump is smart. Another ep should be dropping in a few hours, and I can't wait!

Boy the vibes of this rendition of Zelda 2 continues to impress. My first ever exposure to the original game growing up was the GBA port, and remember it didn’t really hold my attention long… had it had this level of polish and quality though? I can safe say I’m loving it!

Hey Jared! I've known about you for years but never actually took the time to see any of your videos. Recently I've gotten into NitN and decided I need more Jared content. I'm really enjoying this playthrough. I missed this classic Zelda game, but let its black sheep status keep me from playing it. Nonetheless, I have enjoyed other let's-plays on it, and yours has already become my favorite. It looks so fun and I like how much you're enjoying it. I may need to try it out for myself.

For the chicken, just hold Jump. No need to re-press the button for hovering. The boulder solution changes per playthrough of the game, so you can't rely on watching other peoples playthroughs of the game to know the answer to your own playthrough!

Honestly the change to the Fairy spell is probably for the better; there's a lot of spots in Zelda II you could just cheese with the original spell, which would be especially bad with the amount of platforming sections this remaster added, this still has some of the intended usage while also having a few traits of its own.

I'm just curious what they're going to do with the late game palaces. I know one of them had a high wall that required Fairy to climb, as well as spots over bottomless/lava pits you need fairy to cross, and some small alcoves you could only enter with the reduced height.

Don't forget about money makin game! Hoverbat has done such an amazing job. If this had been the Zelda 2 that came out this would have been what all the Zeldas were based on after. The earlier version I played maybe could have been done on the NES. At this point I'm guessing it couldn't.

you can upgrade the cucco spell to carry over between screens. you gotta find the wise man’s hut in a swamp near nabooru

If you don't know any of the boulder sequence, there are about 40K possible combos. If you know just 4 boulders, there are 24 possible combos, so it's a lot easier to brute force.

I know you said no spoilers, so I'm going to say is that if you walk into a town from the left you will enter the left side of the town or the right the right side. ( Also walk left out of the castle with Zelda)

It's the same thing as ALTTP/OOT, except instead of holding a chicken to slow fall you ARE the chicken. Also, you can actually attack and get into narrow spaces.
