Project 9: A Small Wooden Joiner's Mallet w/ Leather and Elm Facing

I decided to make a joiner's mallet for more delicate work. The oak mallet head weighs ~7 oz (~200g) it is filled with lead disks. The handle is made from an old ash broom handle. The handle is inlaid with epoxy mixed with iron and brass powder. The finish is 3 coats of shellac. Be sure to checkout all the great joiners mallet videos on youtube. Project 9.
Joiner's mallet dimension, 13.5" overall length. I made the mallet handle longer so I can greater force control. The mallet head is 1.25" in diameter, the head length is ~4". One side of the mallet head is faced with leather, the other side is faced with elm. Elm is a good wood for mallets because it is resistant to splitting. I decided to make the facing of the mallet head replaceable.
The inscription is a parody of another famous phrasing.

The Cu content thing, pre-1982 is more dense and a classier material than post-1982.

Really nice mallet. I like the old cut down penny to help prevent more cracking, I think that it gave it some character. Also love your inlays. Well done. Enjoyed the whole video and music. Thank you

Ariel Barton Thanks for the suggestion. Anything dense would work. FYI, lead is about 30-40% more density than steel. Copper, silver, or gold would be a great substitute, they are all dense and malleable. I am thinking about making one from brass.
@johnzzhu
@johnzzhu 9 жыл бұрын
Ariel Barton Yeah, I figured there were some confusion. Sand is poor choice if I want a heavy small mallet. I empirically disagree with many of Steve Ramsey's suggestions, advice, and opinions; but I understand why he does it. A gold mallet would be awesome if you could afford it, call it an investment. The idea of using brass is something I have been thinking about for awhile. If you look into the Studley tool chest, on the right near the top, there is a mallet that I used as a spring board for a design. It is just a matter of scheduling to bring it out into reality. I think brass hammer heads are available for purchase online.
@johnzzhu
@johnzzhu 9 жыл бұрын
Ariel Barton That's true, reason is a precious resource. I would keep the gold well encased in wood and not use it as a striking surface.
