Wow!!! I want to be that kind of teacher who allows students to have freedom in their learning; very impactful.

Merlinda Johnson At the end of each project, we do a “plus/deltas” and the kids give input on how and/or what they want to learn. We match their responses with district requirements and off we go!

I wondered if the oral assessment can be done during practice presentation? I bet all the content assessment also done before the presentation day, right? This will reduce the stress during presentation day. Presentation day is celebration day. Assessing on that day will be way too much work. Just relax and chill on that day.

For PBL to be effective, there needs to be careful planning in structures, consistency in implementation across disciplines, and buy-in from students that there is a common goal and purpose, on top of many other factors. It takes a team's effort to get it running to provide meaningful education to students.

Yes, it does! Setting up a culture of professionalism and individual accountability is crucial, but it is possible - no matter what your student strata is!

Sounds good; however, in implementing PBL for several years I can tell you there are many problems. The top students will benefit tremendously. Social loafing is a major problem, major. Some students are diligent in their work and are left with the bulk of the work load, complaining, "it's not fair,"frustrated, up late trying to meet deadlines. For too many, their goal is to latch on to a team with one member or two with the go getter mindset and reap all the benefits. Is this where education is going? Even college?

Project Based Learning at its worse it worse than bad Direct Instruction. Your complaint is why it is so important for this exploration to be guided by the teacher. The teacher need to be checking in with each group and each student throughout the project, if they are failing to do that, then that is when the problem you mentioned occurs.

There is an infrastructure in place to hold each student accountable.

You can include individual tasks in a project based learning. For an example, individual reading, answering comprehension questions individually, then only do peer teaching. You can give students a team management tool to write down who is responsible for which task in an activity. You can include individual assessment in project based learning to check their understanding, like exit slip, quiz, report, outline of report, reflection writing.
