Brian this is excellent STOL guide stuff! Thanks for recommending the book had no idea it was out there. While I'm months away from my own STOL plane, watching content like this is really helpful because these back country spots I want to one day visit. Great video, flight tips and locations...more please! Subscribed and belled!

My first back country experience was landing at Mackey Bar. There’s plenty of room but being the first time from 500 foot it looks small. It helps to do your homework and know where your emergency go round needs to be. Had a great breakfast any way. There’s six more strips to explore. Love Idaho.

Thanks for sharing these fantastic videos Brian. I'd love to see you do a review on the approach/departure of Indian Creek (S81) if you're out that way. I'm sure it's no problem for the Kitfox, but I've always been fascinated by its offset approach and the long climb out through the mountains.

HI Verdi, If you like the outdoor lifestyle, it is a great place to live. Few people, most of the land is public land, meaning you can hike, camp etc virtually anywhere over most of the state. Great skiing, plentiful everything and much cheaper than living in England at least. Go visit, see for yourself; best of lcuk in your decision!

Very nice and great stuff from all the pilots in Idaho. I am from Indiana, flat land, and have a new desire to fly low and slow. Watching the KitFox guys in the Idaho videos will cost me some money. I plan to practice in the Midwest for a while, and then a trip to fly Idaho. I have been to Sun Valley multiple times for a Power Engineering Conference over the years and love the state. I am considering a Zenith 801 primarily because I have no experience with a T-dragger. Any advice? BTW. the midair collision video is heartbreaking. My sympathy's with the family's and friends of those that were lost. I will always remember that video and out of respect for the pilots a tragic reminder to me about radio traffic in the pattern. The loss is a vacancy in everyone's heart but I am sure good memory's will always remain. My sympathy and respect goes out to everyone.
@BowenAero

Idaho is such a great place to visit by airplane. I'm sure a 801 would do great there, but don't be afraid to get into tailwheel airplanes. There is a reason that the vast majority of backcountry and off airport flyers fly them.

Oh, BTW, I’m planning on building a Rans S-7 in the near future and I’d love to fly up to Idaho and do some backcountry flying....it looks like a really fun playground. I’m also going to check out that link that you provided and probably get the iPad app like you did.

Mark H it has 130hp, so it does really well. It is about 80lbs heavier. I find that it performs great down around sea level but as I get up to higher DA’s when the power drops off I can then feel the weight. I have been very happy with it.

RB3 Baize It depends on how I have the prop pitched and altitude, but I usually cruise at 110mph and burn about 6.5 gallons an hour. I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning towards building new, this one flys so nice now, I would hate to change it.

Last year I sold N2280J which was s KITFOX IV Speedster with the 80 HP Rotax. It cruised at about 100 mph at 5200 rpm on a Warp Drive ground adjustable prop. Burned about 4 to 4.5 /hr. I miss it.

Are you ever tempted to build a Kitfox SuperSport S7 and go with a Rotax powerplant instead? I assume you bought this one used?
@BowenAero
@BowenAero 5 жыл бұрын
Randy van Vliet no I built this one. I took it over as a partially completed project. I bought it specifically because it had a Lycoming already hanging on the fuselage. Personally I’m not interested in the Rotax, but they make a great combination with the Kitfox. I am currently looking at putting a Yamaha Apex engine in one with the STI wing.
