One of the few things I loved about my high school was that they did their best to make everything monetarily accessible. A couples ticket to prom was like $35 and a single was $20 and they let anyone buy a “couples” ticket to save the $5 dollars. The vast majority of “couples” were two best friends who wanted a discount (or someone bringing a friend from another school) but they also didn’t bar anyone from going if they couldn’t afford a ticket. I’m not sure exactly how it worked but I think if you were signed up for free lunch then you could get a ticket for free or something along those lines. This same thing went for every field trip that cost money, there were usually fundraisers so if you were getting financial assistance then you had to also fund raise but you didn’t have to sell a certain amount or anything. Every permission slip that when out included something along the lines of not wanting any students to miss out on this opportunity because of their financial situation. Part of why this worked what because the school is really small for a public school in the US. My senior year there was 360 kids in the entire school. We were small enough that literally any student could attend prom, so freshman trying to get invited by seniors or anything, they literally just went and bought a ticket.

I never had a prom at my high school. My sisters best friend asked me and I wore a dress that I thrifted last minute and it was honestly not that fun. The good thing about it was Sarah (my sisters friend) We just talked about fandoms the whole night and we went back to her house and watched movies. We dated the summer after high school, too, but she went away for college and we broke up. She's still one of my best friends tho.
