I remember driving up on the closed highway during the blizzard of 07. Took us hours to get there - when they opened the road we showed up and only a few wanted to go up the mountain due to the insane cold. I remember the first chair up, being alone in the muted snow, hitting waist-high fresh tracks, all the glades untouched, every rock drop possible. I remember laying in the snow after a long run, exhausted, staring up at the sky while the snow washed away my last run. God damn, I miss that mountain. Nothing in the NE beat Whiteface after a huge storm, as rare as it was. One of my best memories skiing.

This video makes me wish that millions of years ago the tectonic plates under our continent collided way more powerfully so that we'd get mountains twice as tall in the northeast. Imagine skiing the slides for 3-4000 vertical feet instead of 500. Combine that with the lake effect and the northeast could have some of the best skiing on the planet.

actually they did collide quite powerfully, however years of erosion have made them the size they are now. the appalachian mountains are something like 480 million years old, while the rockies are 80 million years old. that is a lot more time to erode, and the reason they are so much smaller today. at the time of their formation though, they were as high as the himalayas.

Late march / early april is when the best chance of them being open. I always expected it to be open earlier in the year but then i noticed the trend and got it multiple years in a row. I guess it’s just a lot safer once everything is wet and slushy. This looks more like people have just gone in earlier on in the year and got extremely lucky from the looks of all that fresh powder, that and ever since that added the new part of the mountain off to the right side a few years ago it is now easier then ever to sneak into the slides from that side that was once inaccessible, not to mention you now finally have access to slide 5 which was previously just about totally inaccessible and you almost would never see tracks on it before the newest addition off to the right side of the mountain. Also, in my opinion slide 4 is the best and has the most character, it also has one of the biggest drops on it where you can tide off a giant boulder the is between 10 and 15 feet high, love it!!!! : )

Lol, as someone who grew up there, slides are never open. except for a day or two in the spring and the skiing is nowhere near that good. Most likely got special permits to shoot but damn does that show what's out there. Makes it really tempting to duck the ropes with avy gear and do it anyways.

Love the opening track and edit. The first time I ever skied was 20 years ago at whiteface during the connecticut speedskating club annual trip to skate the long track. Since then i've been to all the east's biggest mountains, plus Jackson, Sun Valley, Aspen, Park City, Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, & Solitude. Never made it back to whiteface though. Now I feel like I should give it a shot...

That is crazy, first time I ever skied was at Whiteface because we were in Lake Placid for the North American Long Track Championships 30 years ago. Honestly, skiing felt a lot like skating with really long skates, especially at Whiteface because the surface is so similar... I would say that first skiing experience led almost directly to me quitting speedskating. Mountains were a lot more interesting than ovals to me.

Whoever said 07 was the last good snow year at the Face is incorrect. A few years ago we got 3 noreasters in a row Whiteface opened the slides with 30+ inches one of the best ski days of my life. That was a treat never skied them in powder usually they don't open the slides until spring and it's corn or sticky heavy powder.
