“Two members of the Central Park Five spoke to CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday night, and they argued that President Trump‘s defense of Rob Porter fits in quite well with Trump’s pattern of behavior.
Yusef Salaam and Raymond Santana were wrongfully convicted of raping and assaulting a jogger back in the ’90s. Trump not only called for their executions with a full page New York Times ad, but he still believes the two men are guilty despite both of them being exonerated by DNA evidence.
This, obviously, is rather different from how Trump has handled the accusations against Porter by wishing him a bright future and dismissing the women accusing the former White House aide of abuse. When Santana was asked for his thoughts about this, he said it wasn’t a surprise that Trump is doing “something that is dumb and is ignorant.”
Salaam hopped in by saying that Trump is showing signs of “affluenza” by giving Porter and other white people the benefit of the doubt, but not the Central Park Five. Santana agreed that race plays a part in Trump’s thinking, saying “here we are, Black and Latino boys who were 14 and 15 years old, and he didn’t mind giving us the death penalty…at the end of the day, this is his character.”
When asked if he would like Trump to apologize, Salaam said he abandoned all hope of getting a mea culpa from the president, saying “I can’t count on an apology from a person who doesn’t even know what it is to apologize.” Santana agreed, saying Trump had his chance to clean up his past mistake and he didn’t take it.”

I can honestly say this is the worst period in US history that I've ever lived through. Donald Trump is a stain on everything the United States stands for and will not easily be washed away. Some people will use the argument that, the central park 5 was a long time ago and that we all say and do dumb things when we're young... that's true, but trump is 70 years old right now, so thirty years ago he would've been in his 40s. A forty year old is not exactly a spring chicken, and should be capable of rational thought.

The things I should carry death penalties are the white collar crimes that leave all of our parents and grandparents without a retirement and these guys are living multi million dollar houses driving million dollar cars with a helicopters and jets. And their crimes if ever caught go virtually with a slap on the wrist or maybe some community service. Which is easily paid off. These are the criminals that need to die not the guy that's convicted of attempted to smuggle so many pounds of cannabis period yet never found with anything and never convicted of anything priors. no recordings or any physical evidence. Yet you can go to jail and the white collar guy goes Scott free

However, Salaam was implicated by all of the other four, Then none of the five said they themselves actually raped the jogger, but each confessed to being an accomplice to the rape.All five said that they themselves had helped restrain the jogger, touched her, while one or more others raped her .

Winston Robson the attack happen April 19 , 1989. Donald trumps Ad ran on May 1, 1989. They were convicted in 1990. Matias Reyes later confessed to the charge in 2002, but could not be prosecuted because the statues of limitations at the time had passed. Matias Reyes was already serving life in prison for another crime.

I complete agree with that statement, but the problem is that in the grander scale, we often don't, instead focusing on aspects that are less important and letting those overshadow serious issues. But yes. I completely agree with you (and was actually thinking that in response to myself right after I posted, so I appreciate that). Yes, we can walk and chew gum at the same time. Or at least we should be able to. Whether we actually will is a different story.

Sutekh 23 I think the problem is that Trump is in charge largely due to our focus on attacking character rather than issues. I think Trump is an absolute moron, but even I'm responding to things like this negatively now, and that negativity is translating to a more positive perception of Trump. That perception is completely irrational, and it's not informing my actions or causing me to want to actively support Trump, but it is showing me the psychological effect of indiscriminately focusing on (often disingenuous and unnecessary) attacks on character. This is what I'm getting from my own reactions to things like this. Trump said something rational in response to this situation, yet the focus is immediately shifted to his inconsistencies, and those inconsistencies are framed to attack him as a racist and as someone more interested in protecting his in-group than justice. (I think he's mostly interested in increasing his appeal, and I think he'll actually believe that his appeal is a result of actual value whether it is or not. But that's another topic.) But here's where this kind of thing backfires. What he said about this situation was rational and contrary to popular opinion (in the media, at least). That makes the attack look disingenuous to supporters, it confirms a belief that his attackers are more interested in character assassination than content, that they will side against a rational position due to their prejudices, and that makes it so legitimate attacks are more easily dismissed. Like that thing about him doing all the feces porn with Margaret Thatcher in 1997, or him and Trudeau putting Ninja Turtle toys in each other's butts last year. So anyway, I think we should keep our focus on actual issues and save criticism for where it's most valid, because there's plenty of valid criticism, and making an attack that can easily be deflected just makes you look tribalistic, angry, and confused. Which is how Donatello looked after Trump put Splinter's head in Justin Trudeau.

You are quite right about the perceived tribalism, and how stupid, unfounded attacks can and often do backfire on those making them. The point I am trying to make however is that trump is a total hypocrite, and that, my friend IS a valid criticism. Crying about due process when you were willing to try cases in the court of public appeal yourself is inherently hypocritical. Claiming Christian values when you have 5 kids to 3 wives, let alone the alleged sleeping around IS hypocritical. Focussing on illegal immigration, chain migration and anchor babies IS hypocritical when you marry a possible illegal, chain migrate her parents and have an anchor baby yourself. You see, while you could call it "character assassination", I prefer to just look at his record, and it's there for anyone to see who is willing to see it. I get your point, I really do, but in trumps case, this is a valid criticism.
