The show is a masterpiece but also depressing af. I'm glad they didn't kill off Rust and Marty in the climax of the show, as originally intended. That would have left us with this uneasy feeling.

Cohle wasnt so much protecting Marty he was just aware of what a wreck and how utterly useless Marty was at the moment and knew Marty would probably figure out a way to get them both busted just by trying to help. Or Marty would want some. but no way Marty stops him from stealing the coke. The fact that they need coke as part of their completely illegal operation to lure a man into a kidnap and torture scenario in order to get the location for their serial killer/meth cook suspect means however Rust gets the coke it will be the least of their misdeeds. If they got caught Marty would be wishing he could take the blame for just stealing some coke. Compared to Rust killing two men in a home invasion that triggers a riot and massive gun fight that leaves probably a dozen people dead stealing some coke is like something you would see on Andy Griffith. Oh look Marty stole some dope how quaint it really was a simpler time then. Marty could probably even keep his job if that was all he had done he was after all one of the boys and he was going through a tough time with his dad dying and Maggie's dad not dying and her leaving and he had Rust Cohle as his new partner that just seals the deal the entire department was probably stealing dope since Rust started there. They had a massive blowout the night Rust took his vacation and huddled up in the bathroom with a couple straws is how they even found out the coke had been replaced with some flour, Captain was pissed he had been saving that coke ever since Rust put in for time off if Steve Geraci hadnt put some of his private "Rust" coke stash back for emergencies they would have been screwed. They would see Marty as the victim and sweep that shit under the rug. Once they all heard about how Rust was mowing Marty's lawn with him not there. Sitting in his wife beater drinking tea and smiling at Maggie when Marty walks in the door from an entire day of chasing after bad guys they would all curse Rust( and maggie) then the Captain would order Marty to counseling and time off with pay.

Rust said that you can comprehend someone just by looking into their eyes. He said everyone is looking for some kinf of redemption and this search is expressed by the eyes. So each time rust looks into his own eyes, he is trying to look into himself, to see what kind of redemption he seeks. Maybe he does know that it has to do with his daughter dying and he just wonders if he ever will have his redemption. Or maybe he doesn't even know what's wrong with him, what kind of redemption he is looking for, and he just continue to stare at his guilt without understanding what it is. In all cases, he is trying to look into himself
