Its scientific name is Mansoa alliacea or garlic vine. In addition to the name of the garlic orchid, it is also known as the pink string. The tree is native to the amazon rainforest and regions of South Africa.
* Characteristics of the tree
Colour
Flowers have 2 main colors that are purple garlic orchids and yellow garlic orchids. However, currently the most popular is the purple garlic orchid.
* Trunks and branches
The trunk is a vine that can turn into wood if it is long lived. Plant height depends on the climbing plant and the host plant. But the average is about 2 to 5m. Therefore, in the growing process, you should not choose a host for the tree that is too tall.
* Leaf
The leaves are the main host for its characteristic garlic-like scent. The leaves are relatively crispy, and if lightly squeezed, they will break and emit a garlic smell. The leaves will usually fall off most of the time in winter, leaving only a few leaves at the top of the tree.
* Flower
The flowers of the plant grow in clusters. Each inflorescence has about 15 to 20 flowers. The soft and thin flowers often alternate between dark purple and light purple flowers forming a cluster.
* Uses
Garlic orchids repel snakes
The special use of this plant is to repel snakes. It is the scent of garlic that makes snakes stay away from this plant. This plant is often planted on fences to keep snakes away from residential areas.
* Making herbs
The plant is used for its analgesic, anti-rheumatic, and anti-inflammatory extracts. In addition, the leaves of the plant are used to treat coughs, flu, colds, and pneumonia. These properties are quite similar to the garlic we often see.
* Planting and taking care of trees
Growing a tree is very simple, you just need to cut a piece of the stem with 3 or more sleeping eyes. It is best to choose the sections closest to the root that are the most liveable. However, in my experience, old, hard branches are also very easy to grow.
Planting method is like planting cassava or planting potatoes. Choose a place where the soil is moist but full of light. Dig a small hole about 10cm deep and as wide as the seedling and mix the soil with organic fertilizer, then take the cut out and put it in the pre-dug hole and cover it with soil.
In about 10 to 15 days, the plants have started to take root and sprout. When germinating you need to make a barrier to prevent insects or animals from breaking. After the tree grows to about 15cm, equip it with a climbing rig.
Climbing Scaffolding: The climbing pole for the tree needs to be sturdy, avoid being made of weak wood or woven with bamboo. It is best to climb the steel frame truss or fence, porch ..vv
