So, I have a bucket list and one thing on it is I want to learn to play guitar. My eldedt Son who lives in a different state than I do, taught himself to play guitar back in 1998, had a band for quite a while which had my younger Son who is a self-taught drummer as his drummer (my younger Son is stilll in a band of his own and they play throughout the metroplex in the state he and I live in) Anyway, for my birthday in March of this year, my eldest Son bought me a whole beginner's, electric guitar kit with a Fender amp. I am also a piano player but having a heck of a time trying to teach myself to play this guitar. Would it be easier for me if I learned how to play right-handed? I should mention that when writing, I am ambidextrous. Thanks. Great video I learned I have been holding my hand incorrectly. I appreciate thst.

As a self-taught (still in the process) guitarist in the initial stages, I would say this is a must-see lesson for EVERY budding guitarist who's learning by themselves. Incorporate every single part of the technique emphasized in the tutorial and you are well set to have good technique on the fingering hand. The natural (and intuitive) way till be to play with the flat part of the finger and griping the neck with the palm. That way you'll hit a ceiling quickly. Very nice lesson and thank you! :)

I am not sure why most people do not talk about keeping the wrist as straight as possible to avoid using too much thumb pressure. If you press too hard with the thumb you can cause tendon injuries at the base of the thumb. If you bend the wrist too much for long periods, you can get carpal tunnel syndrome. I had to learn the hard way. I hope I can help one person with this advice and also always beware of tension in your body and hands. It is not necessary for the pressure needed to press a string to the fretboard. I’m recovered and playing again with many changes that fit my physiology. Take care of your body if you want to play for a long time without injuries. Other than those issues, great video.

@Studio33guitar
@Studio33guitar 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message! Congratulations on starting to learn to play! Are the strings new? New strings can be stretched by grabbing one at a time around the 12the fret and pulling it straight out away from the fretboard. After pulling it, re tune it and repeat until you can pull on it and have it stay on tune. If the strings are old, they may go out of tune easily and need to be replaced. Or the issue may be with the guitar itself and may require it to be repaired. Hope this helps Troy

@Studio33guitar
@Studio33guitar 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Good question. Your elbow should be in a natural position. You should not have to push it way out away from your body or pull it way in. The same goes for your wrist. If you lay your arm on your lap, palm up and then bring it up to the guitar neck, it should be close to the correct position. I hope this helps. I also have another video that talks more about this -

I'm new to guitar, but one theme that I feel is common through learning music and things in general, is that it is helpful to learn to follow the rules before you begin to break them. Build a foundation/baseline first and then learn when/why/how to stray from it.

Hi Thanks for the video really helpful. I've been playing since June 2020 and i am progressing really well usually doing an hour a day practice however i still dont feel like my fret hand is comfortable when playing 1-5 frets near the neck and then also when moving up to 12th fret + on low E string i struggle. Im pretty sure ive got the technique down as you show in this video. is it just a case of time will slowly make me more comfortable or do you suspect my technique still isnt right? i didnt think when i started practicing guitar that hand positioning would be one of the most difficult aspects for me xD

Jade S if you're stuck, try to fix it as soon as possible. Don't get super far in your playing with bad technique because you WILL run into issues later on and then you'll have to re-learn and that's always a pain. It sucks to go through that. This was 2 months ago but please try and fix that asap. It feels awkward because you're already used to the wrong technique. Just because it's comfortable, doesn't mean it'll be alright. When it comes to instruments, you have to be uncomfortable to play right

Barre chords are definitely the hardest thing to play on guitar. It can be very frustrating. You can try playing around with the angle of your wrist and your elbow to try and find something that is comfortable. The good news is, it will get easier with time. It took me a few years of playing before I was able to comfortably play barre chords. I’m the meantime you may enjoy this video about barre chord substitutions. These can be converted to full barre chords down the road kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mN1_pMt0x5u6foE.html

one feedback ... as an absolute beginner ... (i've thrown a lot of money through the window, to buy a Strat) .... who thinks it is impossible to play those chords. It is not visible in this video what is the position of the guitar vs the body ... in other words, at what angle is it inclined vs. the body. From the position you play those chords, can you see the frets ? If yet (and this is the only way for me to put my fingers on the right strings) than it is impossible to keep the thumb on the back of the neck and have the fingers on the right position ....
@Studio33guitar
@Studio33guitar 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for the question. The guitar should be sitting straight up and down, it shouldn't be tilted back against the body. It is very common for beginners to want to do this in order to see their fingers better, but it will cause issues with your hand positioning. If you must tilt the guitar to see your fingers, get your fingers in the correct positions and then bring the guitar back up to the proper placement. I hope this helps.

@jacobebenkamp
@jacobebenkamp 6 жыл бұрын
UpAt 3AM the dexterity of the guitar (whether it's left -handed or right-handed) refers to which hand picks the strings. For example, on a left-handed guitar, the left hand would be picking and the right hand fretting.

Thank you for the question! I should have been a little more clear, in that this is for strict form and mostly for playing individual notes (scales etc). The principle is there for chords too, but not as strict because the angle of your hand will need to adjust to play multiple strings at once. As your skill develops you will find you don’t have to be as strict. Also, everyone’s hand is a different size and some find wrapping their thumb around the neck more natural. Hope this helps!

This does not work for me at all. First, I simply cannot separate my index and middle fingers. In order to do this i have to twist my whole arm towards my body to a degree that is very uncomfortable and actually pains my wrist. Second, with my thumb so down my hand does not have enough base and the whole weight shifts on my fingers, which simply lack enough strength to hold the whole hand as well as the strings. Last, this way my palm mutes the high E completely. The only way i can actually manage to play the damn instrument is with my thumb all the way up.
