In this second episode of "Teach Yourself to Draw", we will cover the fundamental elements of proportions. Proportions are the foundation of any realistic drawing, but they're also the most difficult challenge in a beginners or self-taught artist's journey.
In this episode, I try to share techniques an autodidact artist can put to use in a regular practice. Hope it helps !

About me (bio) :
I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. I do mostly drawing and oil painting, and my goal is always to provide techniques and explanations that can be useful to anyone, from beginners to more advanced artists.
The material I use most of the time (not necessarily in this video) :

✓ An old synthetic brush
✓ Masking tape
✓ Cutter
✓ Sandpaper or sanding block
✓ Mahlstick or Hand rest (DIY)

Charcoal
✓ If available: Nitram charcoals (H, HB and B)
!!! Or, if not::

✓ Pencil sketch Conté Pierre noire : H and HB
Sanguine
✓ Sketch pencil Conté : Blood and blood Medici

Very useful video, especially the bit about landmarks. I'd love to see how you use the plumbline with 3D models, like a still life in a shadow box or even a live model. Keep up doing these drawing videos, they're excellent.

I recommend you start learning basic perspective methods like rotating boxes in perspective, before getting into complex “sight size” methods. There is a free course called “Draw A Box” on youtube that really helped me understand perspective. And moderndayjames’s perspective videos. Perspective to me is the most important element of drawing and once you understand it you’ll feel free drawing anything you want, but first you have to start understanding the basic shapes first then mold them into anything you want.

Dear Florent, thank you for these in depth tutorials! Another question occured to me which I couldn´t find an answer to in your videos. What technique do you use when drawing in a different scale than your reference? While some techniques of the sight size method still work, like comparing proportions, others, like comparing dimensions and measuring, do not. So what are possible ways to solve this? I have noticed in some of the videos of your large scale oil painting that you occasionally use some kind of grid, but it seems to me that this is more for the purpose of the composition rather than the scaling..

Did a copy of a drawing side by side same size and I raised the drawing with something so new drawing paper would have a decent position for theresult. Everything was 1/4 inch lower than original. That’s ok but why?

Because the drawing is done sight-sight (1:1) and the goal is to train to be able to draw without measuring tools.
