Prores Raw Post Production Workflow (Final Cut & Premiere)

This is a walk through for how to properly set up and work with prores raw footage in both Final Cut and Premiere Pro. Prores Raw is a great codec to work with but given that it is a raw codec there a couple of steps that you need to take in order to get the best results.

I have found that to change the color space in premiere pro for all your clips you can save the "PRORES Raw Source Settings" as a preset (After changing the color space, just right-click and select "save preset") and then select all your clips and drag and drop from the Effects panel. I just shot a documentary in Zimbabwe and had over seven hours of footage and you best believe I wasn't going to change each clip one by one. If anyone sees a problem with this method please correct me!

You don't need to save your prores raw source settings as a preset after editing one file ... just edit, right click on the prores raw source settings and select "copy". After that you just have to select all your clips, right click the selected clips and klick "paste" and that's it.

In PP If you change one clip to slog 3, highlight your source settings, right click and select copy, then highlight all the media you want to change to log in the project window, then control-v to paste and you can batch add the slog profile to all your clips

You have no idea how amazed I am to find this video. I am a novice and have been trying to shoot in ProRes RAW into my Atomos for the first time having been scared of it for a long time. I just couldn’t work out why the footage was always so bad considering I monitored the exposure etc and I had no idea about the settings in FCPX and the fact it added a Camera LUT automatically !! Thank you so much for this !! I was losing my mind :-)

Unfortunately it isn’t at the moment. There is a white balance slider but not a manual white balance adjustment for raw.

you can change Exposure or iso , metering in final cut by selecting the drop down meta data menu and select settings and it will bring those settings and can be changed.

Im using fcpx 10.5.2 with the a7s3 on Raw and you do need to get into wide gamut hdr mode to really bring down the highlights, I've tried before and after and see a big difference.

If you have a normal SDR monitor and use the standard raw to log conversion (which converts the raw signal into an SDR space) there shouldn’t be a difference between the two modes. They both end up in log (which is SDR) as the starting point for your color grade. You do need to use the wide HDR mode if you don’t use the raw to log conversion but that isn’t “technically” the standard workflow - although I suppose if you get good results without it then who cares!

What's up with the notification I receive on fcpx "Adding HDR clip to SDR project"? And why does my prores raw footage look darker in the browser vs when I drag them into the timeline, they are brighter?? Is this just what happens in the rec709 workspace? Do I just work with it or do I have settings that are off?

So I'm using FCPX, what's your custom LUT of choice? Or do you build from log on your own? I'm trying to use Leeming LUT after the conversion process, but I'm not satisfied with the color afterwards. Any other suggestions? Do you have a video on Denoising RAW footage?

Hey Adrian, I’ve really enjoyed James Miller’s SLog 3 DELUTs as well as any of Alister Chapman LUTs. Those have been my two favorites recently! No I don’t have vids on denoising footage. But I use neat videos plugin in FCPX

Hey Riley, I thought it would be possible to change the exposure and ISO of the files on Final Cut Pro. But these options wont show up for me on the info tab. Any idea why? On Premiere the exposure shows up like in yours.

@@RileyEndicott Yeap, Just redownload again. It's weird because the codec shows Apple ProRes Raw, Linear PCM. But nothing about ISO or Exposure, not even on extended Metadata view

@@fledsilveira5918 if I had to guess I would say that you aren’t on the right ISO setting. There is a way to add settings to each of the different metadata views. There a couple of different ISO options. You might need to select all of them and find the right one 🤷‍♂️

It probably depends on your computer but I would say in most cases, no. Its a pretty easy codec to edit with.

You can’t export pro res raw as a delivery format. It’s only an acquisition format. I would suggest either an h.264 export or a standard prores export.

@@RileyEndicott i recorded a 10 second video using prores raw and export using the 422 preset and take me 40 min to upload to youtube theb try to export using the h. 264 and take almost 45min to upload to youtube i dont know what im doing wrong

@@georgemelo5326 Hey George, that may be an issue with your internet connection. Upload times to KZfaq are really dependent on your connection and the file size. Even a relatively beefy 10 second clip shouldn’t take 40 minutes.

Technically speaking,...true raw sensor data has no white balance. Why? Because true raw sensor data has no "color" in it. It's just three RGB filtered GREY scale channels. ProresRAW saves them separate from each other. When the file is opened, the three channels are assigned RGB color values and mixed together. File metadata tell the player what gain/ISO to add by default to the assembled image and off you go. You cant white balance raw sensor data because there is no full color in it to even shift white to. White balance is an image "assembly" process and not something that can be saved inside raw sensor data. So, the normal white balance tools in Premiere work as they normally do for any raw or non-raw video file. Blackmagic raw is different because it FLATTENS it's RGB channels and creates a full color mixed image and saves THAT to file. ProresRAW is "true" raw and NOT deBayered to file. BRAW is NOT "true" raw as it does deBayer the image in-camera and yes, white balance CAN be applied to that file and "baked in".

I’m speaking from experience specifically with the a7siii. There are other cameras that use prores raw via the ninja v that give us WB control. It’s possible and if it wasn’t apple would’ve likely said so originally.

@@RileyEndicott - White balance in true raw, like ProResRAW is just a metadata flag. It's just a data marker from the camera that says: "Camera operator was using 5200K" The raw image assembler can take that metadata and apply that to the raw deBayer automatically for you. If that metadata is not there, then you just need manually adjust white balance to whatever you feel like when you open the raw file. You do this every day with standard video too. (But standard video has mixed color and white balance already baked in) The good thing about raw is because it has no color mixed together, whatever white balance you do in your editor is not destructive. Just white balance any raw the way your normally would with standard video.
