This video will cover how to control throttle on a motorcycle for better control. In teaching beginner riders in the basic riding course I see many riders do not grip the throttle correctly. In this video I will give a quick tip that will help you be more consistent when it comes to gripping the throttle.

Another tip to help keep a flat wrist & also promotes safety & proper lever setup is I approach my throttle with my pointer finger extended & covering my brake lever. I do this every time I roll off my throttle even when I don’t intend to brake the bike.

Hi Paul, love your 5 to 10 minute clips, they are so precise, obvious due to your skill level. Having practiced your back of hand paralle[ to arm, i now find the wrist can only rotate upwards about 40 degrees so giving finer control at LOW speed, instead of the hand grip/fingers down and giving about 180 degrees, giving to much throttle. Thanks once again.

This is definitely the first tip every single rider should know before touching a bike. I didn't know this the first time many years ago and whisky throttled a big ole bike straight up into the air and it was shear luck someone was right there to immediately kill the engine and help grab the bike or it would have been on top of me almost instantly.

In order to cover the front brake, I grip the throttle by cradling it between my thumb and index finger. It felt awkward at first, but it pretty much forces me to keep my wrist flat. This also gives me a much better feel for the throttle by making it more of a wrist motion and less of a hand motion.

This is exactly what I practised this afternoon. I want silky smooth control and I get a bit frustrated when the ride feels jerky. The first I tell myself is to loosen the grip. The other thing I'm trying is to hold my hand against the innermost side of the throttle and loosen my fingers so that the "U" formed by forefinger and thumb modulates the throttle with less tightening of the other three digits. Thoughts please?

That is a common problem. What your probably doing is reaching to quick for the front brake before you have completely rolled off the throttle. When you do this and pull in the clutch you will get high rev's. Please let me know if this sounds correct. I am getting ready to work on a video covering this. Thank you for watching and asking your question. I will try to get that video out in the next couple weeks. Until then practice rolling off the throttle then reaching for the front brake.

I am sorry to hear that. It sounds like your wrist was rolling when you turned the handlebars which is a common problem. The easy fix is you need to stiffen your writs a little which will keep it from rolling. Do you plan on trying again? @@ameda28 I believe everything happens for a reason. Was the throttle your only issue?

@@ProriderCentralTexasKZfaq no,because of my issue with the throttle I had trouble with balancing so I kept dropping my feet to try to steady myself...

both of grips are incorrect. because if something happends u need to put ur fingers on brake lever, sometines it costs a lot. better to hold 2 fingers on brake lever most of the time. its a good habit that can save riders life.

It is really a rider preference. When I see a hazard I will cover the brake. I am a four finger brake using 4 fingers and I practice braking a lot.

@@ProriderCentralTexasKZfaq thats the problem-most riders do the same "-i read situation on the road i know before bad situation starts" and so on. but there are a lot of things happening by non realistic (at first sight) scenario. can u predict that tire of heavy truck will blow in 30 meters in front of u? or some sort of wild animal that is trespassing the road, or a dog? its the same for motorcycle killswitch-always use it to stop the motor first and if bad situation happends u will use killswitch fast instead of trying to reach and turn off ignition key i am not trying to teach u, just pointing my thoughts about those really important things.

@@bytemyvoid I always listen to other points of view. I don't pretend to know it all and there's always more than one way to skin a cat as they say. I appreciate your insight.

You never even mentioned the biggest problem with incorrect grip... And I don't know where it even got its name- Whiskey Throttle.

Yep and I don't know where the name comes from either. I will have to look it up. Thank you for watching and for your comment.

Sir, so as an instructor, you dont teach your students to 'cover' the brake lever while the hand is on the throttle, which would, by simple range of motion, keep their hand on the throttle in a better position...along with, by way of how you demonstrated, teach them to brake with two fingers and not the entire hand-full? Maybe im nit-picking, but...your 'tip' was a little flawed sir...all due respect.

I teach braking with 4 fingers . I think you meant to cover front brake and I don't teach that either. I teach to use rear brake when doing slow speed maneuvers.
