Whether you're a gamer or an office worker, you should not use the keyboard wrist rest to actually REST your wrist: rather it is meant to keep your wrists straight (no wrist extension) and thereby reduce the pressure on the carpal tunnel whilst limiting the strain on the wrist extensor and the wrist flexor muscles (extensor carpi and flexor carpi).
In this wrist rest review, I will tell you about the pros and cons of a wrist rest for keyboard from an ergonomic stand point. If it is misused, it can increase the risk of ulnar and radial wrist deviation, which is a source of lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow).
The same reasoning applies to your mouse pad: you should float on it, not rest on it!

Fascinating and very helpful, ty Olivier! My partner does the floating wrist and it looks so odd to me. He also thinks it's strange but it is what suits him. Now we know I'm the one using the wrist rest wrong. I have muscle atrophy and it is hard to lift my wrists so I do rest on the wrist rest to the point my palms get a dry patch. But I've gotten stronger now so I want to try focusing on the movement of my whole arms, not fixing myself into one spot. I hope more ppl find this video. Very life changing indeed!

This was very helpful! I'm struggling to define the right keyboard for a MacBook, using the Magic Keyboard. Finding that for long programming sessions, my wrists start hurting. The cues of moving your elbows and keeping your wrists straight are good ones. I'm so habituated to resting my wrists on the table however that it's going to take some practice to integrate your tips.

Damn, this is a fantastic explanation in general. - I have a horrible habit of leaning into my wrists, even when using the mouse. - I don't know why... I know I do it, but I keep doing it. - I guess it's because I lean forward, despite having a very good chair. - I need to lean back more and not forward and use my arms and wrists as support.

Great explanation. One important point in my experience is the distance at which you place the keyboard. When you place the keyboard very close to the edge of the table (I keep mine as close as possible) you do not have to hold your forearm up, which is tiring and IMO the reason why many rest their wrists while typing. So I think wrist rests are in that sense bad that they force you to push the keyboard farther away from you and thus increasing the work to hold the forearm up, thus in the end then "needing" the wrist rest, but just because you added the extra distance through the wrist rest. So I think best is to have a keyboard with no wrist rest. One exception would be _if_ there would be a rest attached to the keyboard, which could float (extend) from the table a bit and thus allowing to use the rest as such, only when typing is paused. What are your thoughts on this analysis/ experience from me?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard Жыл бұрын
You're right, Nick: you analysis matches what I say in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l52hm6SYvc21hGQ.html. There are maybe some more parameters to consider, though: - if you have a thick keyboard, a wrist rest might be more useful than if you have a flat one - if you don't hold your arms on your lats, you may feel that they hang in the air: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8ChibNzyrXMqnU.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8ChibNzyrXMqnU.html

The concept of floating on the wrist rest is great for people using the computer for a few hours, but not a solution for someone who uses it 8-16 hours a day for work. It's kind of amazing that no product has nailed this yet. They'll run a distraction for a bit, know what I mean, with something like a vertical mouse. They''ll be effective for the people who only use a comp for a few hours a day, but anyone that uses the comp for long hours learns within the first day or two that a vertical mouse creates a whole new type of pain because you now have to create back pressure with your thumb. Additionally, you lose so much precision using a vertical mouse which makes it almost useless for CAD drawing, charting markups, detailed graphic design, etc., so you end up alternating between reg and vert mouse, which triggers both injuries and makes them both worse as a whole, lol.

Hi @Oivier! What would you recommend for long term usage from an ergonomic point of view for a programmer(not typing as much as professional translator or writer), an ergonomic but full size keyboard(like K860 you showed) or a TKL(compact without numpad)? Thank you in advance!
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate! Have a look at this other video on how to choose an ergonomic input device: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJl9Z8Sd19fdZmQ.html. If you don't use numbers too much, I'd definitely go for a compact keyboard (I use Logitech K380) because it allows you to keep the mouse closer to the midline of your body, which will reduce neck strain. Makes sense?

I have a thicker keyboard and I use the wrist wrest to provide support for my arm. The weight of each arm is being supported by the bottom part of the palms, to keep my wrists from being compressed. Is this okay? Also, my arms come at the keyboard at an angle, like this: / \. I figured it would be best if they came at it like this: | |. But my shoulders are too wide, so I tried a split keyboard by kenesis, and it was completely flat and didn't let you angle it, so it was very uncomfortable.

What are your opinions on memory foam pillows im using one right now it has a shape for the neck curved inward is this good?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 3 жыл бұрын
As often, it depends 🤣... memory foam is super comfortable but it tends to soften when warm. For example, I have on my webshop a lumbar support made of this material, which people love. But when you sit, you shouldn't sit for 1hr in a row. Hence, you should check that you have the same quality of neck support after a few hours. The other thing is that your pillow is shaped. In a way, it limits the mobility of your neck. If you're a quiet sleeper and you feel comfortable in the position offered by the pillow, great. But I'm not quiet and I keep turning the pillow to rest on the cold side of it. So for me, using an asymmetric pillow is very uncomfortable. Hence, it depends means in this case that I have nothing against it per se if you love it, but that I advise people to test before they buy. And as far as pillows are concerned, it's often not easy to test for long enough: there's always a part of a risk. But what's sure is that you NEED a pillow that makes you feel comfortable: it's essential to your sleep quality. Makes sense?

I thought wrist rests were just for people whose finger nails are long, and maybe acryclic and that's just how they type. Wrist rest just really get in the way for me, but I type more like a pianist with upright curled fingers and really short nails and that's just natural for me. I never get carpal tunnel but I do get sore hands from vaccine induced arthritis if I type too much.

Hi Olivier, provided my elbow height is barely scratching the desk (my thighs are snug up against it), is it fine to rest my palms alone on the desk as I type and mouse, since I don't have neither down or up wrist extension? Having watched some of your different tutorials, it seems like resting even part of my forearms on the desk is a no-go in the long run. Floating my hands takes practice, I suppose. Thanks!
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Piotr :) Sorry for a very late reply! I'm not too sure, but I think your desk is quite thick, right (or there's a thick reinforcement)? Reg. forearms: there's a difference between contact and pressure: your forearms can be on the desk as long as they have their full mobility, which is difficult to keep for prolonged periods. Check out this full explanation and let me know if it makes sense: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8ChibNzyrXMqnU.html 😅

What about mouse rest? Is it the same condition where your wrist should be floating instead of being stationary on one location? Also, a mouse rest is only that small and is fixed location.. is it recommended to get it then?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 10 ай бұрын
Indeed, the wrist should be floating as well. And the size may be a limiting factor indeed. Plus, they aren't appropriate if you use a vertical mouse. Hence, I think it's better to have a vertical mouse but no mouse wrist rest.
