Who is Ron Spomer

After living near Yellowstone for many years I learned the triad for protecting yourself from grizzly bears. The first leg of the triad is to wear bells on your backpack because the noise scares away grizzlies. The second leg of the triad is to carry bear spray. The third leg is to understand how to identify grizzly bear scat so you'll know when they are around. Grizzly bear scat smells of bear spray and has little bells in it.

Always Always carry a 22 pistol to shoot your buddy in the kneecap, then you don't have to outrun the bear, just your buddy

One piece of advice: When you decide to get bear spray, also get a few cans of "Inert Trainer" for the type of spray you have. You wouldn't carry a pistol you've never fired. Same here. Practice with the trainers. Learn first hand what it will do, and how it fires/behaves. This also applies to any defensive tools you carry. Pistol, mace, bear spray, knife, etc....practice, practice, practice.

As we was always told all my years living in Alaska. Bear spray turns a pup tent from a sandwich bag into a Mexican meal. They like hot and spicy.

There are also benefits to bear spray and I hope you cover those as well. And no, I’m not a left wing softie. I’ve been in bear country and have found a comfort zone with both lethal and non lethal protection against bears. Please research a study done in AK several years ago with comparative outcomes of bear attacks where one or the other was used. The results may be of some surprise. Thank you for an excellent channel.

I give lots of warning to customers who buy it... use the whole can.. you're gonna get blow back no matter what.. very little is going to actually hit the bears face.. carry on a belt not a pack so it's always on your body.. etc

Bear spray is really the best I can do while I’m out on trails mountain biking. Better than nothing!

Wear your bear spray on your hip. A good pin will take some robust movements , but it's easy to access.

I feel like the bits with people spraying themselves are just a case of "dude, be careful." If anything can hurt you, keep an eye on it and be careful

You could always use bear spray. Actually, better yet, you could coat yourself in Franks Red Hot Sauce…I heard bears like spicy food.

@@TerryLee04950 That’s not what I’m talking about. The bear spray mentioned in this video that you obviously didn’t pay attention to is a form of pepper spray used on bears. Try again when you actually have a clue what you are talking about.

@@adamr9215 I do have a clue. Bear spray does have it’s pros and cons. Sorry if I offended you. I was merely joking. I never used it, had no need to. I lived 18+ years in bear country. Between Manly Hot springs and rampart.

Hell in a can.. As a LEO O.C. instructor that's been sprayed more times than I want to remember. Bear spray and other stuff for animals is nasty. A long time back postal handlers had spray to use in case for dogs called "HEAT" as nasty as about anything and oil based not water like most typical O.C. spray's. I've got 3-4 cans of bear spray but I live in area and spend quite some time now in bear county. Not grizzly but black bear mainly. If one of them attacks it's planning on eating you then. Lead is a primary choice of mine, but plan B is always good to have. Bells help for hiking but not good for hunting... bear and cougars like to know when and where dinner is going to be served.🙃

I don't like bear spray. Doesn't work on bear. That's good for people. I accidentally had a can of to go off in my pocket one time my pants pocket. I'm surprised I can still have kids

Fun fact: Bear spray is also more effective at repelling a brown bear attack than any firearm.

There are two ways to stop a brown bear attack before it mauls you into little pieces: #1: You can spray it in the face with bear spray, which will instantly neutralize the attack. The bear will choke and cough and within seconds be unable to even open its eyes to see you. This is the BEST method with the highest success rate at stopping a bear attack. #2: You can use a firearm, but there are three important things to know if you decide to go down that road: (1) You must use a cartridge that is capable of penetrating the bear's skull, (2) you must hit the bear directly in the center of its brain, and (3) if you hit the bear anywhere else it WILL attack you, and most likely tear you into a bunch of dead little pieces before it finally bleeds to death or dies of infection hours, days, or weeks later. Don't take my word for it. Any credible source on the internet will explain this for you.

I'm 66 years old. I've been hunting in the Appalachians since I was nine that is nothing I haven't killed. Trust me it's 12 gauge shotgun with either slugs or double-alt buckshot is more efficient. My neighbor will cost you about me killed a 500 lb black baer with one shot from a 22 in the back of the eel out the food. My shotgun to a can of mace any day. But like I said in the earlier text and it looks good on people

@@lonewolf286 A black bear is nothing compared to a Grizzly or a Kodiak or any kind of brown bear. Hell, when I see a black bear it's usually running away from me in panic. No so with the the big brown monsters. There are no brown bears in Appalachia, so it doesn't surprise me that you're 66 and don't know how to protect yourself against one. Go ahead and look it up before you spout more nonsense.

Well good buddy. If we ever come up against the grizzly you can use your bear spray and I always use a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with double all buckshot and we will see which one walks away and which one doesn't
