You forgot to mention the path of being an SLPA (speech language pathologist assistant). For that you only need a bachelors. And you said “you can’t just get a bachelors and make 60k” which is true for a full SLP but not true for an SLPA. Where I live in a major Texas city, the lowest pay advertised for an SLPA in a school is 60k while the average is around 70k for private clinics and companies that plug you into different schools. The highest I’ve seen is 85k. Now obviously an SLPA has a lot less responsibilities and expertise than an SLP, but it’s still working in the industry involved in every aspect of speech pathology. This is my goal, because I want to make good money as an SLPA before I decide if grad school is worth it.

I like your plan. Work for a few years as an SLPA and see if it's for you or not.

PROS I had not thought about when I was younger- a desk / corporate job can be soul sucking and SO boring. (YES you get to NOT have to be ON and in peoples faces which is tiring) BUT I hate sitting at a desk and I love moving around and talking to people, doing chart reviews, going from room to room at the facilities ( I also work in medical mostly). LOVE using my brain, and when I had office jobs I spent a TON of time shopping online and BS - ing. no thanks.

Thank you so much for this video. I've been going back and forth between a Master's in Education and pursuing my dream to teach, or getting into SLP where I can still work with kiddos but afford to live. This was so informative and your honesty is so appreciated!

@@lizbethrodriguezXO it depends. If I make retirement in my current career, I’ll go to education. If I decide to split early I’ll be going the SLP route

I have my masters in education and 3 years later I'm in grad school to become an SLP. I personally would recommend getting a masters in Speech Pathology. There's so many accelerated programs out there to become a teacher. You can always come back to the field if you feel like being an SLP is not worth it. I did love teaching, it was just mentally exhausting and becoming an SLP gives me more flexible options.

Thanks for your videos, they are incredibly helpful. What percentage of my week would I expect to be doing direct client contact tasks versus writing-based tasks, if I went into speech path? E.g. working with client one on one versus report writing, emails and so on. Thanks in advance for your reply, it's so hard to find specific information like this online.

How do you deal with supervisors who expect you to load up on cases? Please discuss the pros of being a traveling SLP more. Also, do employers not care that traveling SLP's change jobs every three months or so? Do they care if you take a month off in between each contract to regroup and rest? Thank you!

Great topics! I'll quickly answer here employers really don't care about taking time off or only working 3 months. If you have a 60+ day gap on your resume they may ask you put what you were doing on your resume. I've put "traveling for fun" as a gap and again nobody cared, still got jobs.

hi thank you for sharing such informative and comprehensive video. May I ask you for some advice that I got a language related bachelor's degree, and a TESOL master degree. Is it possible to be a SLPA in a clinic? i thought i am a language-sensitive but introverted person. whereas, I am not sure if I could authentically handle this position or graduate from SP master program for qualification.
