Kia Ora everyone 👋
If you're visiting our channel for the first time, my wife Yen and I are local Kiwi Asians making content from our home city of Auckland, New Zealand and from around the world too. I (Peter) migrated to New Zealand from China at the age of three and Yen migrated here from Malaysia at the age of four. We've grown up in NZ, went to school in NZ, met and got married in NZ and spent our entire working and adult lives in NZ too.
We make travel and food videos from New Zealand and all around the world so if you like our stuff please consider subscribing, also drop us a comment. We love hearing from everyone and appreciate your support of our channel.
On June 28 2019, we left our jobs to travel the world. You can watch a little on that here 🙂
• We Quit Our Jobs to Tr...
This video is from my personal perspective as an Asian who grew up in this country since I was a little kid. Honestly, it is a little biased towards the pros section simply cause I love this country. Both Yen and I get homesick whenever we are away too long. New Zealand is one place that no matter where we are in the world we will always call home.
As it's a pretty detailed topic, for clarification and more details about my comment on free healthcare and education in New Zealand, please see below:
== FREE HEALTHCARE IN NZ ==
- New Zealand has about 40 public hospitals spread across the country. With minor exceptions like cosmetic surgery, hospital treatment is free for those eligible for healthcare services and NZ residents. Waiting lists can be long to receive public healthcare though.
- Most costs of injuries from accidents are covered by ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation). This covers everyone in New Zealand.
- GP (General Practitioner/family doctor) visits have a consultation fee but if you're enrolled with the practice it's generally subsidized so it's cheaper. For more info: www.health.govt.nz/your-healt...
- Under the Talk Teeth programme, children get free basic care for their teeth until they are 18. Otherwise, dentists are not part of the free public health system.
- From birth to five years, all children in New Zealand qualify for a free health service called Well Child/Tamariki Ora. All children under 13 are eligible for free general practice visits (includes immunization, eyesight and hearing checks at school and visits to the doctor). NB: not all GPs provide free visits though so it's best to check with your GP first. Basic dental care through schools are also free while children are at school.
- In New Zealand, publicly funded COVID-19 related care - including diagnosis, testing and treatment - is provided to anyone who requires it, who has symptoms. This is irrespective of citizenship, visa status, nationality or level of medical insurance coverage.

For full details check out:
www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/liv...
== FREE EDUCATION IN NZ ==
- Education is free between the ages of 5 and 19 at state schools (schools that are government owned and funded) if you're a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident.
- Private schools get some government funding but are mostly funded through charging parents school fees.
For full details check out:
www.education.govt.nz/our-wor...
- One year of tertiary education fees is free for NZ citizens and ordinarily residents enrolled in school in or after 2017 or you may qualify for two years fees free for industry training. Just need to check eligibility:

Great shots of Auckland. PROS: - It is MUCH safer than most other countries - People are quite relaxed and laid-back. - There are SOOOOO many things you can do as a tourist. I mean, a mind-blowing amount where everything little town has its own reason for visiting. - The tourist network is very well organized. - Great education system compared to many other countries. - Pineapple lumps CONS: - NZ is quite expensive in general with Auckland being more expensive than the rest of the country. - The local transport system is terrible compared to most other countries. You are expected to have a car to get anywhere within a town. - Have I already mentioned it's expensive? Peter, are you and your wife currently in NZ or traveling abroad?

That's an interesting fact! Nz has had a lot of forests cleared for farmland back in the day. But now there are so many new forests planted as well as protected reserves seems we're on the right track 🌿👍
@kuharua54
@kuharua54 5 жыл бұрын
@@PeterandYen for sure bro, things are looking up on that front. I just get a bit sad sometimes about how things could've been, ya know? Most of the forests that weren't cleared were picked apart for sawmills. NZ is running at like 15% original nature. Don't mind me bro I'm just a jaded fella. Cool video, especially the stuff about the sun being potent.
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 5 жыл бұрын
Not at all bro I totally get ya. We went to waiheke island the other day and one of the guides at the zip line tour who also happened to be a major nature lover showed us a spot with some incredible trees. Apparently back in the day nz was covered in these very ancient looking beautiful forests but most of them were burnt. A bit heart broken hearing it and so happy at least some survived. Gave a totara tree a hug after hahahaha. I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to nature too. So I get ya!

@@PeterandYen totara are magnificent as fuck man. If you ever wanna get the proper experience of some old bush, go to Bruce park on the way to bulls from taihape. It's not a large area but it's untouched as far as the big trees are concerned. Eye opening experience.

Hey thank you for this awesome video! I was born and raised in Italy, but after many years I decided to see the world and seek a better place to live. I'm currently on "your" side of the world, studying Japanese in Tokyo, because I've always loved Japanese people, their culture, their hospitality, and their food. The language is very warm and emotional, more so than I thought, although reading and writing it is crazy hard. But for various reasons, I don't think I'll settle down here. New Zealand is currently my #1 place to visit and maybe end up staying in! So I'll be watching your entire channel if you don't mind XD

My friend lives in NZ. He is happy, not so happy. Kept in touch with him, this is his reply.. NZ is good, nice & lot of other good things that were mentioned here so let's add what my friend said. Buying a house is not affordable as not everyone earns a lot. Lots of people are renting/boarding as affordability to own one is way out of reach. Crime is ridiculously high & the system is softer on the crime which does not set any deterrent for others. You just get some home detention, you can be a repeat offender for drink- drive still be on the roads driving again, there is much more to it. Public transport system is a massive failure in the whole of country , full of blunders & that’s why people rely on cars, motorcycles, etc. You can’t do anything without a car so most of the households have two or three cars. It is not cheap to live here as you don’t get to make enough hence why it is expensive. Not everything is available here either.

damn it I love this country. The rivers are fun to kayak down and the fjordlands may be some of the coolest places on earth, and the peninsulas and islands are so fun. School camps taught me to appreciate this country's extravagance in the nature aspect, but the cultural aspect is a plus too. I've been to most of the major cities in the North Island and I enjoyed every one, from Taupo to Tauranga. Not particularly fond of Auckland, but that may just be because living 30 minutes from the city centre is considered close. where I grew up, Palmy North, you could traverse the whole city in 30 minutes. The memories that stick with me though always come back to natural features. Climbing Mount Ruapehu, witnessing soo many waterfalls, seeing seals on the beach at Cape Palliser, kayaking backwards down the Rangitikei River, going on a few bushwalks, and jetboating down the Waikato River to have a geothermal safari. This country is not without flaws, but there really is no place like New Zealand

I lived in NZ for 15months and it was amazing. The people, nature and just the overall feeling of the country. People are so friendly and their cafes are so good! People are down to earth and care more about living a connected (to people nature) life than living a, by western standards, succesful life in general. I notice that I only got asked once; what do your parents do? And here people ask all the time (Holland) people just dont care and are friendly.
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 5 жыл бұрын
You are so right! In some countries people always ask us what do we do for jobs and what our parents jobs are... like they're trying to assess how much we're worth or something 😅 New Zealand people generally get along without much thought of what your title is. There is no such thing as "free" healthcare and education. Ultimately, SOMEONE must pay for those services -- it's not as if the money is simply falling from the heavens. Therefore, next time someone claims something, like healthcare, is free, what he really means is, "I want you to pay for me." (What a novel -- and personally convenient -- way to vote, no?)
