I hate to break it to everyone watching but every. single. city. has problems. I visited Portland a year ago and while you definitely notice the blemishes, you can't beat the people. The people were so kind, a little weird, a litttle whimsical. It just has good energy.

Visited Portland recently, it changed so much in 5 years. Graffiti and homeless everywhere. It was so odd seeing a tent right outside someone’s home. It was depressing. I used different Lyft drivers and they were warning me about places to avoid. I woke up on my last morning there to a homeless man screaming in the morning. So happy to leave.

Yes it has changed in 5 years. If you are not familiar with Portland (or any big city in America) you could end up staying in the a part of town that has higher crime. What area were you staying in?

⁠@@PrashanthGCdowntown is pretty bad I went there on a trip so I’m not a expert on the city but as long as you don’t mess with the homeless people they won’t mess with you but they openly do any drug they feel like so it’s a experience I stayed at the kimpton hotel vintage and I saw a guy smoking different things in tinfoil if you know what I mean and a gold wrapped Lamborghini within one block so it’s a very odd city but it’s still worth it to go 100%

Is this an AD? If this was any more softball it would be a rubber ball. Schools are hit and miss? They’re always hit and miss. You know most school districts have more than 1 school? So it is up to you to find the good schools in the district? That is, unless there are bad good schools in the entire district.

A note on public transit - while our light rail and street car system could be better, busses are very easy to use and go just about anywhere in the metro here.

I've lived in Portland in 2002, moved to Denver, and moved back to Portland in 2005. I moved here because the cost of living was cheap, everybody in the US avoided the Pacific Northwest because of the winter gloom and rains, rent was cheap, and houses were cheap. NOW, especially post-pandemic Portland....this city is crazy expensive, rent and house sale are insanely expensive...it's no wonder we have Homeless and Opioid Crisis in Portland. Sad to see many blue collar worker homeless and on drugs as an escape from the depressing reality

It's really not bad. I would suggest coming out to visit so you can see for your self. Lot's of neighborhoods with very little homeless and crime. Investigate the areas you would like to live.

We heard the same thing but traveling through the "bad" areas it looks like any other large city, and not so bad in comparison. Husband and I were talking about how we expected to be panhandle ld in downtown Gresham when he came to visit. Did not happen, and he fell in love with old downtown Gresham. Gresham is east of Portland, but I cannot tell when I am in Portland or Gresham at times.

@movingtoportlandoregon You have to be truthful. When I visited Portland with my family all we saw were homeless people. We even had a homeless guy on the highway ramp throw rocks at our rental car. The place is terrible for families unless you're going to live outside Portland, like bend Oregon.

About 10 years ago, Portland was probably my favorite city on the coast. Now? Forget about it. I live in St Louis but the utter lawlessness in Portland is on a whole other level.

Not sure where you are getting your news from but it's not the wild Wild West out here. St Louis actually has a much much higher violent crime average and slightly higher property crime. I live local and get my news from KOIN. I'm not sure why you keep shilling for this sh**hole city littered with homelessness, drugs, crime, and a complete dereliction of responsibility by those in charge. Your bias is astounding considering what I see in the news everyday about attacks on businesses, encampments near residential areas, etc. Hell they wouldn't even have cleared up the sidewalks if the ADA hadn't sued. I know you mean well but please stop misleading people.

Also wanting to relocate from a suburb of Dallas, but we are waiting until our son graduates from HS, so we have a couple years, but I LOVE Portland. So much access to nature, things are so close, and not three months of 100 degree temperatures. 🥵

There has been a lot of shootings but its not really random. Its 2 sources really, in homeless camps and gang violence. If you're not in a gang or in a homeless camp the chances of random violence is low. I live in a 'bad" neighborhood, never had a problem in the last decade or so.

I feel like in recent months portland is somewhat making a comeback, and there are less tents everywhere. It is nice to see my city becoming better! Also I love how every other comment is people talking about how much it changed for the worse and they are so sad

PDX has excellent public transportation everywhere outside of downtown. Not sure why they’d say it doesn’t. There’s tons of public transportation. More than anywhere I’ve ever lived. I live in Miami now. Have lived in NY LA Phoenix. Portland by far has the best public transportation.

Hi Anthony, Portland does have great public transportation if you happen to live near a MAX line but if you live in the suburbs, other than beaverton, it's not as great if you want the MAX. The MAX doesn't even go to most suburbs. They've been working on getting a line through south Portland to Lake Oswego, I hope that happens one day. That would be great to be able to take it into the city. The buses go everywhere. It's hard to compete with NY, you really don't need a car there at all for commuting.

@@movingtoportlandoregon you act like MAX is the only form of public transportation. There’s literally busses that go absolutely EVERYWHERE. There isn’t a single place in the Portland/VanCouver metro area that doesn’t have a 100 buses going absolutely anywhere you’d want to go. You’re just wrong.

Hey Anthony, What exactly am I wrong about? I said the buses go everywhere. Buses have to stop a lot and go with the flow of traffic. Trains do not, they get the right of way more often thus are usually preferred public transportation as they are quicker. Not sure why you are trying to argue about public transportation with me when we literally agree. I think it's great you take public transit everywhere, I wish more people did. I have many clients that have moved here with the intention to just take public transportation everywhere and are loving it. Most have moved to a condo near downtown with high walkability as well.

@@BAND-MAID-USA Ahh you don't take the public transportation here. I assumed since you were giving advice to people about the buses you must use them all time. When I personally think of a great public transportation system it includes trains. I've also found that people moving to Portland also see the value in using trains over buses because they are quicker and provide a more pleasant experience. Have a great one!

I am looking to move from the Los Angeles area, a single woman with 3 dogs, I don't drive but want to give my doggos the best of the city life and nature, what is the best area? I heard Portland is very dog friendly which is one of the reasons I am so interested, I grew up in tacoma area and love the gloom as well.

comparison... hmmm well my mom and brother still live there. Because of the crazy heat it's not a good fit for me. Portland is a way small city, easier to get around, much less traffic, and weather is amazing in the summer here. Home prices are more expensive here, probably 2x as much for the average home. But if it works for your budget I think it's a no brainer.

I visited a friend in Portland 3x this year, it felt safe and clean, and people were so friendly. I'm inclined to move there now that I just graduated nursing school. I currently live in Dallas, I've seen more homeless and crimes here than what I did in Portland. Are new grad nursing jobs easily available in Portland?

Hillsboro is nice but hardly rural! There's basically a suburb that starts in west Portland and goes all the way to Hillsboro, though Hillsboro does have sort of a small town feel and it's far enough away that driving and parking isn't a headache. There are a lot of high tech companies (mainly Intel) in Hillsboro and some schools are good but housing is expensive.

My daughter wants to visit the national park in Oregon is that safe? Granted we live in Chicago and I'm more nervous her going there, where I have seen people with tents everywhere. I don't see it where you are.

Yes. Crater Lake is very far from Portland. It's pretty remote. The only tents there will be campers!

Just like Chicago, Portland has safe and less safe areas. I have been out around River North at 1 AM and felt perfectly safe at midnight. Other areas - not so much. Portland is the same way. Crater Lake is 4 hours from Portland. The main danger you will find there is smoke from forest fires in the summer or snow in the wither. If you go in the winter, only the South entrance is open. You can cross country ski or snowshoe parts of the ring road in winter. The lodge is closed in the winter.@@kitcancanu114

It seems the most flee Portland to other counties or different states entirely because of the outrageous happenings that go on from political to civil unrest, to the ever growing homeless problems. I feel for an average working class family it just can't work... And now large businesses like Wal Mart and Whole foods just straight up abandoned ship over there. Yes it lets small businesses have a better potential to thrive, but it doesn't seem to help when looters come and take whatever and the understaffed police cannot help.

@@kronos963 Great, so you see for your self. Here is an article that explains the reasons for big stores closing like Walmart (It's 2 stores in the city proper not the suburbs by the way). Retail is shifting and changing, it's not one sound bite reason like shoplifting. It's a bunch of factors like competition. They look at the whole business model and see which stores are not performing. Personally, I'm not a fan of Walmart or what they stand for. I prefer to support local or regional when ever I can, that's just me. A lot of big companies are using the "increased crime" reason to close already under performing stores, get out of leases, or avoid union disputes. The Portland area homes are priced higher per sq foot than most Austin, TX suburbs that I came from. But the quality of a similar sized home in Gresham, $40,000 more than my Austin area home, was of higher quality. The taxes were the same. The Gresham home needs some work over the next 3 years. If you avoid the three county Portland metro area, your taxes may be lower, but public transportation may be less available.

Agents that have youtube pages about the city they live in are not selling homes, they are providing information about the city they live in and have knowledge in/about (Because we drive around in it every day and go to all the neighborhoods giving us a more in depth knowledge than the average joe). It's also a great way to cut out the cheesy sales ads agents take out selling themselves and provide value instead.

Hi Taylor, Houston is way way bigger, way hotter and more humid, takes forever to get around, extremely spread out. Tons of master planned communities and new builds, Portland does not have a lot of new builds. We do have some but not on the scale of Houston. The weather is way nicer here, especially in the summer. The winters are colder here but we don't get the floods like you can in Houston. The surrounds are nicer here, more places to go if you like the outdoors. Houston has more high rated public schools than we do. Portland you need to be more strategic for schools. Hope that helps!

I enjoy the rainy days as well but also enjoy the 4 seasons. It's great to get a balance and see the cycle of the seasons. When it gets too hot I know it will be rainy and cold soon enough!

You just compared it to the most fucked up cities in the whole country 😂 been in Portland my whole life and lived in sf for a while. Portland used to be much nicer than sf now it's sketchy honestly and pretty trashed / lots of drug addicts and shootings. That said still my favorite area to live, just not for Portland anymore unfortunately.

Gresham is great as well. I really like downtown Gresham. Lot's of great shops to walk to there and the homes up in the hills in south Gresham are great.

right now Portland! Perfect city for me at this stage in my life. I did enjoy SoCal when I was younger but once I had kids it wasn't a good fit.

Hi, I enjoyed living in Austin. I have a client moving from there right now and one that just did. I think the biggest differences is Portland is much easier to get around. It has more diverse places 1-2 hour drive, you can be at the beach to the west and in the mountains to the east. The summers here are amazing, the winters here get cold and rainy so take 1 or 2 vacations to warmer places during the winter. The people here are very nice and friendly. We just did that after living in Round Rock/Austin for 48 years. Been here for three days. No kids in school so schools are not a major concern. Thanks Aaron for being our agent and helping us way beyond what we expected.

OK. Been here for 2 weeks now. Health care is a problem. For me, even with a Regence Medicare Advantage PPO plan, I am getting no thank yous from all clinics in Gresham. They either dropped BCBS or say they are not taking any Medicare. The lists provided by BCBS are extremely dated. Some providers do not even answer the phones... a result of problems in the statewide healthcare system of being short staffed. I was spoiled with the high quality and availability of healthcare in the Austin area. Tomorrow is another day to call providers located 30 minutes drive time away, some in Vancouver. I may also contact Medicare about switching Advantage providers and settle with an HMO like Kaiser Permanente.

Is this a good city for recent college grads? I am not from the area, or quite done with college. But the city seems to have a lot of similar values that I have and I plan to go into a career in urban planning. I might potentially go to portland state for my masters if needed. I currently live in Wisconsin and love it, but again I feel like Portland shares more of my beliefs. What is the situation like for renting, is it easy to make friends (I heard mixed things about seattle and the "seattle freeze". What about living completely car free (especially in the winter). Are there any particular neighborhoods that are good for younger people or are single, or just starting their lives and do not have kids. Any details that anyone knows would be great, even if it is something small like a tip to save money. Thank you!

Hi Ben! Great job on almost getting through college. Enjoy this time, it only comes once! I think Portland would be a great place to be single and young. I would recommend renting in NOB Hill, or the Pearl if the rent isn't above your budget. Those areas are near downtown and have 100% walkability and the streetcar and max lines all around. You do not need a car. You can also live directly east of downtown off one of the Max lines. Lot's of young people and plenty of things to do.

@@movingtoportlandoregonNob Hill still has studio and occasional one bedroom apartments for under a grand for newcomers to the Portland area. It is easy to navigate and has every amenity anyone could wish for in city life. It is a fantastic suggestion!!!

I find myself in a very similar place in life as Ben, so it was great to come across this video. I would like to add a comment to ask-is this a safe area? I am legally blind but desire to move across the country and need to be able to rely on transportation and other people. Can I feel safe here? Can I get grocery delivery? Straight out of collefe… can I buy a home for a reasonable price? A house in a place that is still walkable & near a streetcar to get to places I need to go?

@@electrahug7601 There are specific areas that are quite unsafe, particularly at night, but there are a lot of areas that are quite safe. The safer areas will be more expensive, and Portland in general is an expensive place to buy a house. I think they've pretty conscious about disability access and I've seen many street corners torn up over the past few years to put in accessible crosswalks.

I came across thos video while searching for "Portland Oregon". Im glad I did. Living in Washington DC and planning to move to Portland Oregon. I was torn between Portland and Seattle but "the small community like neighborhoods" and many cyclists and less congested city life are what attracted me to Portland. I definitely have to choose the place to live carefully as i don't drive but only depend on my bike and public transportation. Wants to choose where I can jog or cycle regularly but at the same time i want a safe place for a single woman.

I've lived in Seattle / Bellevue and Portland. If your primary concern is public transport and bike-ability - go for Portland. It has better public transportation and, for bikers, the elevation is better. Seattle has some serious hills around downtown. Portland has long been rated the most bikeable West Coast city. If you're used to the subway, the Portland MAX isn't an extensive network but a great option. I commuted on MAX for 5 years and loved it.

You just confirmed what I thought what living in Portland would be like. Yes, I read about Portland MAX too. I think this city would the best fit for me among all the cities in West I looked into.

I'm a SoCal native (Los Angeles/Orange County) but have always felt I'd end up in Oregon or Washington because I prefer cloudy, overcast weather. I'm glad to hear you both have experience living across the country. Im used to seeing homeless people but hoping to find a place where they aren't literally camped outside my building. Looking to move part time to Portland or Vancouver, WA, haven't decided yet. I heard propety values have capped out in the Pearl District so not sure about investing there. Do you recommend any up and coming areas in downtown area that has less homeless, close to Max and home appreciation potential? Thanks!

Every city has those problems, not everywhere is as sheltered as you may like. Show some respect to these people, they’re trying and just because you don’t like it does not mean others won’t.

Portland has very mild winters that's one of the reasons we have such a high percentage of homeless people camping on the streets. Do youself a favor and move to Portland Maine.

Can you elaborate, I’m not sure what you are referring to. Downtown was hit hard during Covid but a lot of reinvestment is going into downtown right now. Have you been recently? There is a new giant food truck pod going in with infrastructure and the Ritz is almost completed as well.

Just left from a visit there. I thought it looked pretty good apart from some dirty spots dt. Of course the financial disparities suck, but it looked good and I had a blast. 4th time there.
