I've been a p.i. for 30 years in south Fla. Some of the biggest cons are having no access to a toilet. Following someone in traffic trying not to lose them and not get spotted at the same time. Very stressful. Or working a surveillance when the person has no vehicle and two or three people come out of the house with the same physical description. Then you have to go to the door and make positive i.d. using a pretext. Also very stressful and can be dangetous at times. Social media doesnt always provide pictures of them. And waking up at 4 or 5am. Horrible. Also working in high crime areas. I have done well and have a six figure income for many years. But i wish i took a different career path when i was younger. . Just my opinion.

You are absolutely correct. I have been doing PI work in Colorado since 2000 and everything you said is true. This job is not for everyone. Just remember, if you screw up and lose the client or get burned....you make no $$$$...do it enough times and no one will use you. ☺

I just started working a field investigator for a large company doing work comp fraud investigations. I have 15 years experience as a deputy sheriff of which I worked as a detective so many of those skill sets transer. I must say, doing PI work is a bit different than cop work. Database availability as a PI are limited compare to police databases but there are other advantages as well. My short term plan is to work for this company for at least a year while I pursue my own Private Investigator license in California. Once I obtain the license I'm going to take the plunge!! Scary and exhilarating at the same time as it will be the first time I work for myself vs. an employer in my life.

I started in field surveillance for insurance cases and the one thing that didn't cross my mind when I applied was that most of the cases are going to be in high crime areas. It's not going to be Mayberry. A lot of the people you're going to have under surveillance have bad driving records as it is and they don't care about doing 85 or 90 down a residential street. You will easily lose these people and the easiest places to get them are at the residence, but when they go out it's a different story.

@@MrRepoman197 The site I was at before this job that’s all I did for two years. A lot of interviewing witnesses to all sorts of stuff. Approaching suspects and what not. I’ve been doing security for a while now. My job now is easy but I do miss interaction. I like to get to the bottom of a situation and figure things out. Private Investigation sparked my interest when just the other night someone stalked my brother and his son. Within two hours I was able to find the person through social media by just investigating and found out he has a criminal record. This stalker was on probation so this is why he ran when my brother mentioned the cops were on their way. I spoke to a neighbor who knew the person who owned the building he was at. This owner lived there as well. Of course he didn’t give me a name but he gave me enough to possibly assume the stalker’s motive and I believe drugs were to play in regards of the stalkers actions. Unfortunately my brother and nephew were just a victim walking by walking by. Long story short due to others on Facebook as I posted a BOLO of this man I was able to find him. Someone commented on the post of a message between the stalker and themselves. Trying to save his face and make him look innocent. I couldn’t see his name on the picture she commented by I could zoom close enough to his picture. I then went on her friends list and eventually found him. Then publicly searched his name in the city he lives in and he had 3 arrest. One was recent. Also he was seen on 2 other’s property the night prior snooping around. One of those people were my good friend’s sister. Finding this all out made my brother feel safer, just incase LE needs notified again and I felt safer going to sleep that night. I’m also sure everyone who saw him snooping around feel safer knowing they have a face to the man they saw on their property late at night. It’s an accomplished feeling.

I work private security right now while I go to school for PI, bailbonds man and process server along with all the the security cleet classes. I have been told PI starts off slow so I decided to get some other stuff for when work is down my town doesn’t have any of these and all out source to a city about 40 minutes away.

You can do process server during slow times. Investigate your subjects and because your pi tactics will work for you in this, you will be able to easily locate your subject and find their point a to point be and all the stops they make in between that are opportunities to serve them their notice.

Great video. Thank you. I'm just starting out in the industry and will thankfully have a mentor in the beginning. I'm wondering how most PI's structure their billing to clients. Do you take a deposit? For longer investigations, should the client be paying as you go? Also interested in whether PI's out there have had difficulties with clients refusing to pay or argue a bill.

I agree on budgeting. Luckily I saved enough to help me survive when the courts were more shut down recently, but almost no work (with the bills still flowing) nearly killed my business.

The easiest way to get experience is to work for someone else for a while. A lot of companies will train you if you show that you have the aptitude for it. Have some demo videos that you have taken to show them that you know how to get the video. Video is king! If you get nothing, you wont last long. ☺

I just want to say I really really wanted to be a pi as a kid sadly my state wants to me to be a cop first for 5 years minimum before I can I spent so long as a kid building the skills I needed to become one and I can't because of paperwork On the bright side I knew I was being cheated on for months before it was revealed to me so it didn't hurt as bad

I turned down a job offer that would pay 19 an hour 350 for the use of my personal car, 25 dollar internet reimburtment. I also have a 2004 honda civic, I spent 4k in car repairs the last time i drove it down to the city of chicago. I'd also have to get my windows tinted to the legal limit. however with the 350 dollar a month bonus, i could use that money for a new used car. I'd also have to spend about 300 bucks for a used laptop with 500 gb and a decent processor plus id have to get a wifi router. Did i do the right thing turning down the job offer?

Funny that you went to school for computer programming and Radio broadcasting. I'm a commo solider in the Army, I've worked with plenty of radios myself. I am hoping to double as a PI. Do you think my military experience (over a year and a half now) would carry any weight to experience counted towards investigative work?

2016-2021 USMC infantry, currently working as private security in the civilian sector. I didnt realize during my time in, nor during my first year and a half of civilian life, but theirs so much small unique skills you pickup as a grunt that helps you exceed beyond where most civilians are at. All that Recon, SEAR, and combat patrol training instinctively kicks in when Im on the clock. My coworkers are always amazed at how much attention to detail and notional thought I put into my work. I would come up with plans and scenarios and share with my team in order to prepare them for a unforseen incident. We call it common sense, civilians call it "badass military training". If you serve any amount of time as an NCO, then you also have those organizational, decisiveness and management skills embedded into your work ethic that make you perform beyond others expectations. Even your own, when I landed my current job I didnt expect just how extra I would be compared to my coworkers. You ever had a command that believed in "Building Character" by making their troops do miserable things? Well, love it or hate it but theyre right. All those shitty moments that make you want to leave the military makes you a competitive product. You can withstand harsher weather conditions, you have the endurance to stay awake longer, you have the grit to take on undesirable tasks, you have the courage to encounter violent people. Things that you dont see as skills while in the military because everyone has them. When you join the CivDiv, those skills start to show themselves. Im not sure how much being a comms Soldier would translate into being a PI. It took me 2 years before I realized private security was the route for me as a infantry Marine, and Im only researching the PI field just for shits. When you become a civilian again, I would recommend starting with a job that youre already trained to do, and work it until you feel like you are well adapted into civilian life. Then when the military brainwashing wears off, when you actually see where your strengths and weaknesses are, and when you feel well adapted into civilian life, pursue what you think would satisfy you. Research it, design a training plan to prepare for it, and give it a go.

Gas is a bitch but I’ve been using my vehicle and just operating like I will always be spending lots of gas and learning how to fix shit when it breaks.

I did it the hard way Jack! LOL I jumped in head first, eyes closed, and prayed for the best. And it worked, I think the prayer part helped the most. I started with a subcontract job for a larger firm, but i had my own business. I expanded as I grew more more knowledge about the industry. I am a family man, Husband, Father, Grand Father, and I have plenty of free time for all of those priorities.

Hello PI Guy - I am not a sexist person & honestly I am a bit of a feminist. However, almost every single time i have dealt w a female PI the experience has been negative. I'm in the legal profession, not a PI, but i have hired PIs and deal w them on a regular basis. Female PIs tend to present themselves well initially, and then assign out the actual field work to male investigators. (The classic bait-and-switch.) They also tend to lecture you and provide unwanted advice instead of focusing on the job at hand. I do not make this claim lightly. I've been dealing w PIs - male and female - for over 40 years (yeah - I'm old) and this has been a constant almost without exception. (Just ONE exception in my experience. She was a great PI. Very professional. Handled her work personally. Unfortunately when she got married - to a cop - she had kids and left the profession.) Ok, Sir. Thx for letting me have my say. No disrespect intended to anyone.

There’s not a lot of female PI. Not in the state I work. Most women I have worked with in investigations like the office life more then working a case. I know a lot of female backgrounds investigators and in office case mangers but not to many female PI.

Being a PI is like being a professional actor -- the better you are the more you earn Annually, anywhere from 20k to 500k The average US median annual earnings from a licensed pi is around 40 to 45,000 Unlicensed: 20k to 40k

It really depends on what industry you get employed in. Domestic typically pays more but can be inconsistent. The insurance side depending on who you work for can range from 13hr, on up. Most of the year is busy, until around xmass where the workload can drop. Majority of the insurance industry are going through their 2022 budgets, personnel taking vacations etc etc. I stay fairly busy year round. Corporate is also the same

@@JohnMorrisThePIGuy name a DB that has more information? I can see license plates, amounts on mortages, judgements, criminal record, known associates, residences, phone numbers…all in one place. There is a reason its as large as it is and why it costs what it does. I agree there are other DB’s, but none that do what LN does in one simple easy package.

No formal training? Isnt a career in law-enforcement necessary to become a P.I.? Im not from the USA but I heard that you need in most states at least several years experience as a policeman or a similar experience in law enforcement. Here in germany, becoming a private investigator isnt even regulated whatsoever. Every person can do it without any licence.
